LOL @ British boxing fans using this fuck up as an excuse why Hatton got knocked the fuck out. He screwed Soto last night but please shut up for your own sake, it is pathetic the excuses you guys have.
Its not an excuse. Its just what happened.
Most sensible fans - British or otherwise - recognise that even if Cortez favoured Hatton, Ricky would have a massive task beating Mayweather.

Ricky Hatton benefited from corrupt refs his whole career and you still complain with such a decisive outcome? Are you that blind to not see the gulf in class between Mayweather and Hatton?
I always hear people talk about corrupt refs favouring Hatton "over in Europe" but never hear any examples.
Oh except the Tszyu fight where Kostya whacked Hatton in the nuts TWICE before Hatton retaliated.
As for the gulf in class between Hatton and Mayweather, that was obvious to most rational boxing fans BEFORE the fight. Hatton would have to scrap and maul his way to victory and have the night of his life. Having a ref against him made the impossible even less possible.
How can anyone think this guy is a compentent referee?
After his performance in the Hatton vs Mayweather fight, he should've been banned from refereeing ever again.
To the people who say "well Mayweather was better and KOed Hatton anyway" - you just dont get it.
Everyone knew Mayweather was the better fighter beforehand and that Hatton would need the night of his life to win. Cortez fucked up any genuine chance Hatton ever had by constantly breaking them up.
He did exactly the same sorta shit last night. Stepping in WHILST PUNCHES WERE BEING EXCHANGED.
Yet BHop's allowed to do the Waltz with Calzaghe and nothing is done?
The other guy DID get hit behind the head, and it did happen when he was down. But what made it a messed up decision is the way Cortez kept trying to braek them up, seemingly not knowing what the hell he was gonna do(either stop it or seperate them when no excessive clinching is happening.) Basicely, Soto was confused by Cortez because he didn't know when to stop. If Cortez handled it better, there would have been no problems.
So to me, it's not that he called for a hit that didn't happen(it did), it's the fact that it's his fault that it happened the way it did.
It really looked like Cortez was trying to make sure that Soto didn't win. Very fishy.

Excellent commentary Benny. Not everything that goes on in a boxing ring is pretty. A referee has to use judgement and discretion in making a decision like that. There was clearly no malicious intent there. Cortez was a total incompetent asshole and he embarrassed himself and the Nevada commission.
Cheers mate! :) Really was a sad day. Cortez is just getting overly officious and is starting to think he is actually part of the fight and that's where it goes wrong. Let's just hope they do something about it.
I also think what was so disgraceful about it was the fact that Cortez had said 'I will take a point off or they could be disqualified'. Now, in this situation, it was entirely not worthy of any disqualification, of any sort, whatsoever! The most that should have happened was a point taken off.
Soto did not hit him intentionally in the back of the head when he was down. There was no delayed reaction from Soto when Lorenzo went down, then Soto hit him. You should only be disqualified when it was clearly an intentional punch to the back of the head when he was down, not while it was in full action without a delay.
Lorenzo went down as Soto was throwing. He was already in action. It was simply a terrible, terrible decision. In the state that Lorenzo was in, why did Cortez even jump in then let them fight again straight away? Why did he keep jumping in at all? It was at the very end of the fight and Soto had it won. There should have been a time out called and a point take from Soto at the worst. It was a awful call.
Cortez should be fired or just quit. You should not even notice the referee. If we are talking about the referee then he is not doing his job very well. If we are always talking about the same referee then it is definitely a very bad thing. I think the problem with some referees like Cortez is that they suddenly think they are actually part of the fight. He gets involved way too much in fights and effects the outcome too much. Not so much the outcome but the action and sometimes, as in this case, the outcome.

God, that is one terrible way of seeing it. Cortez is an absolute disgrace to officials everywhere. Why does he feel the need to keep effecting the action and jumping in? There is no need at all for it and it does nothing to either fighter but screw things up and possibly make any situation very confusing.

Those last 30 seconds were very confusing with Cortez motioning to stop then not stop and motioning to jump in for the knockdown then not jumping in. Also, Lorenzo bending down to dodge punches then getting up then going down again. Obviously Soto was not trying to get cheap shots in. The blow was clearly the result of confusion and the moment. It was unintentional and he got robbed. Fortunately almost everyone who watched knew who actually won the fight.
lol...
Griffin took a knee...Jones looked at him, said fuck it, and knocked him out.
In a fight this bloody and fast paced, it looked like the guy was bending low to avoid punches and took one to the back of the head on the way down. It was a grazing shot though, probably didn't hurt him but he tapped the back of his head like a bitch and from the grace of god and Joe Cortez's onset of Alzheimers got the DQ victory...
Maybe i have double vision but it looked like Soto hit Lorenzo While he was already on his knee, Cortez didnt DQ soto straight away he took time out to speak to other officials at ringside, So it means it wasnt only cortez that saw it that way it meant all the officials that he spoke to agree with him before he DQ soto............Maybe am wrong but i call it like i see it.
If Roy jones in the Griffin fight couldnt get his DQ turn into a No-contest how would soto get his turned?

A 3rd eye, as well as a 4th, 5th, 6th.....
They were all crowded up speaking for five whole minutes while the fighters were still in the ring, confused.
Lorenzo had blood pouring out of his eyes, nose, etc and his corner wasn't allowed to see to him because Cortez was having a nice little meeting.
Delayed for so long, without anyone being able to attend to Lorenzo, that's mental and almost totally undermines Cortez's stressing it was health and safety first. What exactly was he thinking leaving a roughed up bleeding guy on the canvass whilst he went for a chin wag to seem un biased then for?
What happened to Health and Safety first there Joe, seems like it was a clear 2nd or 3rd on your list right there.
Yes am serious, What do you want Cortez to do? Allow the fight to continue? If Lorenzo was down and complaining whats so wrong with Cortez concurring with his official who might have a better view at ringside?
wow, just wow. no further comment.
