I think he is overrated alot in this forum.
I dont rate him highly above. First his best win was against Alexis Arguello who was a FW. People alway downsize Hopkins win for Tito and Oscar because they where WW.
The is alway a question mark in his 1st fight against Alexis on the substance he took. Maradona who people consider the greatest football player in the earth still being critize over drug use and steriods why not Aaron?
I think they should have dont more investagation regarding the matter of Aaron Pryor steroids us and look more into it. I dont know how many fight he used steroids or drugs so I cant tell how many fight he cheated but I going to judge his best win fight against Alexis the first fight was a fact.
Shane Mosley would have similar problems.
There is alot of steroids and drugs in pro boxing. Alot of pressure on fighters to successes but the difference from one fighter i criticize from another is one got caught doing it and nobody deeply invest age it. instead he is consider a ATG.
If Pryor though he could win over Duran, Lenord, Hearn or even Benetize he would have fought them long time ago. They would pay him more and there is more publicity in fighting them which means more money for him. so why didnt he fight them?
I don't like Pryor's chances against the top guys above 140 around this time.
At 140 though, or even at 135 which he was highly rated by The Ring when he was the 140 lb. champ, I have a tough time picking any of those guys over Pryor. If he'd stayed off the drugs, he probably would've stayed at the top of 140 for longer, even with his ridiculously high energy style.
There is a lot of misinformation in this post. Forst of all, Arguello started as a featherweight, but soon outgrew that division and became an outstanding 130 and 135 lb champion. Calling AA a featherweight is like calling De La Hoya or Mosley a lightweight.
Second, while there is no doubt that Pryor abused recreational drugs (cocaine), I've never heard him be accused of using steroids. The drugs he used hurt his career rather than help it.
Finally, saying that Pryor would have fought Duran, Leonard, etc. if he could is ridiculous. None of them would give Pryor a shot. He called out Leonard publicly and was ignored. Duran skipped the 140 lb division rather than fight him.
If you had seen Pryor fight at his prime you'd be singing a different tune. He was very fast, relentless, and had a great killer instinct. Very few 140 lb fighters in history would have even had a chance against him.
being yoked on cocain is almost more of an advantage than steriods. Doesn't matter how many roids you take, you still have to make weight.
with coke he could keep going every round like it was round 1.
that's why he was the only one with the bigger cojones to take the fight with pryor, when nobody else in the lower division had any.
pryor's style of fighting scared the shit out of alot of people.
after winning the title from antonio cervantes (ko'ed in 2 rounds) he was facing nothing but mandatories, all the big names in boxing didn't even bother to call him for a match.
once you knocked aaron pryor down you're done, he gets wild and can easily knock you out with raging combinations.
that amateur fight with hearns is a ****in scrap
Crushed up Clanbuterol tablets.
As Resto stated, Lewis issues all of his fighters as a pep juice.
****ing cheat. That's totally unfair.
It's like giving your guy an athsma inhaler in the corner.

I remember reading that Pryor did call out Duran but Duran just kept quiet about the whole thing. I forgot where I read it, it was a while back.
The biography on Duran mentioned something about Pryor going up in weight to fight Duran, like 10 pounds or something, but negotiations fell through.
Pryor had managerial problems and by the time they were cleared up, the offer to fight Duran (who offered $200k more then Leonard did to Pryor) was off the table.
Duran no enthusiastic?!?!?! impossiable Duran never ducked anyone in his career.
maybe Leonard maybe Hearns against Pryor but he could landed a fight with Roberto Duran
Duran's team (Carlos Eleta) avoided certain matchups. Most likely not Duran himself. Ken Buchanan reflected afterwards on not getting a rematch and he put the blame on the management, saying Duran would fight anyone.
then he should have gone up in weight if he believe he is monster.
at 147 what the hell even fight Hagler
To fight Hagler he'd have go to middleweight.
The welterweights had little motive and reason to fight him. Sure you can fight a lower division champion if you want, but you don't have an obligation to. A welterweight champ has an obligation to fight the best welterweights around.
Pryor gets overrated quite a bit, honestly. He was a beast H2H at 140 but his resume really isn't that special when you consider his ability and how high he often gets ranked.
He also gets overrated by the "Legendary Nights Era" of boxing fans.
he could have fought an eliminator?
anyway the only fight people most remeber about him is the Alexis Argulleo fight

He wanted to move up to fight Hearns, Leonard and Duran, they weren't as enthusiastic as he was in a possible matchup so he stayed at 140. He did move up towards the end of his career though.
Pryor was 5'6 and could have made lightweight. He would have moved to 147 if there was a big fight for him. The thread starter is just ignoring boxing history if he thinks it was Pryor's fault that there were no fights against Duran or Leonard.
I agree, most people only remember him for the Arguello fight which is a shame because he was a very good fighter.
that makes difference alot of difference.

That's why I said they weren't enthusiastic about a potential matchup with him, I'm not saying they outright ducked him because who knows what went on behind the scenes.

He is a good fighter but saying Duran ducked him that makes him overrated. Saying all the glamors superstar boxer of the 70s and 80s ducked that makes him overrated.
like example Margarito is a good fighter but saying he is the most feared guy in boxing makes him overrated.

He's not superman but he was a very good fighter, good combinations, power, speed, chin, heart, his defense wasn't great but was underrated.
He would have been too small against Hagler, Pryor wasn't the biggest 140 pounder, Hagler while not being the biggest middleweight was a much bigger man naturally.

Roberto Duran is one loco loco motherfucker and both are trash talkers.
So I dont think he is the type of person who would back off espically if a fighters is as good as Aaron.
I say he is good but not super man like people make out of him.
He took punchs from Alexis Argulleo props for that but I look at what it made him.
Imagine if a WW puncher will do to him at least hurt him and what if Hagler fought time he would make another Hearns fight
