This one was actually a joke. I actually picked Hearns to win a UD, I think he'd knock Kelly down but not out. I just wanted to see which Calzaghe nuthugger would come after me first, seeing as you're all still mad I called a spade a spade. You sir, are the winner... :nonono:
Great Job!
Duran only quit ONCE, he cleared out the lightweight division stepped up from lightweight to welterweight and beat Sugar Ray Leonard, they fought a 2nd time and Duran quit. It's the only time he's done that. He won titles at Lightweight(buchanan), Welterweight(ray leonard), Light Middleweight(Davey Moore) and Middleweight(Iran Barkley).
Duran didn't hand pick anyone list of great fighters he fought: Hagler, Leonard(thrice), Hearns, Buchanan, Benetez, Kirkland Laing, Pipeno Cuevas, Iran Barkley, Vinny Pazienza (twice), Hector Camacho(twice), Pat Lawlor(twice), Esteban De Jesus, William Joppy.
Hand-picked? That's a hell of a resume right there. Duran was a great.
Exactly, if thats hand picked then no one's resume can ever stand up.
Hearns IMO is a league above Pavlik, Pavlik is strong and effective but one dimensional, Hearns could box and punch and is a genuine legend.
This takes nothing away from Pavlik who is a good fighter but a couple of wins over Taylor doesn't make you a great.
I think Hearns' best chance would be to knock Pavlik out early but if the fight goes past 6 or 7 rounds, Pavlik's workrate and stamina could start catching up to Hearns and it just takes 1 good shot to knock Hearns out late.
Duran quit on his feet, not his stool (not that it makes it any better).
Duran didn't handpick his opponents, but his management (Carlos Eleta) did steer him away from certain matchups. They cancelled a fight with Carlos Ortiz and said Duran was sick, but Duran really wasn't. Eleta also nixed fights with Antonio Cervantes @ 140 and a rematch with Ken Buchanan.
Thats simply becuase Leonard alowed himself to be out boxed and waited until half of the fight before he finally started to bring the heat on Hearns. Hearns has never looked good on the inside and even if he tried to box Hagler, the combination of inside fighting and Hagler's natural advantage in size and strength would have been too much for Tommy to handle. Just take a look back at every fight that Hearns was forced to fight on the inside.
I think THAT was Hearns problem + his chin, he couldn't fight on the inside and to make things worse he couldn't clinch properly either. He could've escaped with a win had he just learnt to tie up an opponent properly.
Your kinda wrong about that. Even before the fight happend Hearns and Hagler wanted to go to WAR. It was gonna be a battle in the inside regardless of anything becuase thats what both fighters wanted. Hearns never and I repeat NEVER wanted to outbox Hagler. That is the reason why we didn't see Hearns use his great foot work. The same foot work he used against Leonard.

Just take a look back at every fight that Hearns was forced to fight on the inside. Hearns is a technical boxer and has no inside game whatsoever. If you let him box you from a distance and don't bother to bring pressure or get on the inside, then he would overwelme you. If you bring pressure and muscle him and is able to take his punches, then you would usually have a shot at out lasting him.
I wouldn't be surprised if Hearns would outbox Pavlik to a decision, he was a very good technical boxer when he wanted to.
If Hearns trades with Pavlik, it would give Pavlik a chance to win by knockout but Hearns could always put Pavlik out with his right hand as well.
A past prime Thomas Hearns wins a decision against LHW champion Virgil Hill.
When Hearns was staggered in the middle rounds, the tempo of the fight started to shift in Leonards favor. Leonard was slowy starting to break him down. He was going to the body more becuase Hearns stamina issues started to show and he couldn't counter effectively as he did in the earlier rounds. When Leonard finally started to make Hearns fight, Hearns had to spend more energy trying to keep Ray honest.
Also, rounds went by before Ray finally got to Tommy and stopped him. Hearns was staggered around the 8th, the stoppage came in the 14th.
I think it was more to do with Ray's body work than Hearns Stamina TBH.
Not all his losses, Hagler-Hearns. I didn't see Hearns tired it the Leonard fight either, he was moving around alot and still jabbing, Leonard just used the right stratergy and pinned him against the ropes caught him with a MASSIVE left hook (i think) which only looked like it grazed and Tommy was almost out and then the stoppage came.
I think it was his chin that let him down really because he couldn't be outboxed by the best but he made mistakes and left his chin exposed which is a bad idea against the great fighters that he lost to.

I really can't decide of people are taking the piss or not....:ugh: C'mon, is anyone actually serious they believe that Pavlik would win at this stage? He's only beaten Taylor for f*cks sake. In the second fight Taylor tried to box and had great success. Now imagine Tommy boxing Pavlik....Pavlik would be eating that piston-like jab all night. If he didn't get KO'ed in the first few rounds his face would be busted up and he is not a big enough one punch knockout artist to beat Hearns by KO.
For everyone saying Hearns was super chinny, answer this, how many times did he actually get KO'd? For someone that's supposedly really chinny, it isn't very much. Pavlik doesn't have the skills. one punch KO power, and he's only won one defense of his middleweight title against a hack and he's already beating Hearns?! :nonono:
Some people need to get a f*cking grip on their hysteria. The guys jumping in for Pavlik here would be the same guys that would go nuts in a mob. Retards. Did I also hear someone say Duran hand picked his opponents? You f*cking douche.
:lol1: I think there's a 20% chance Kelly wins, but I respect this description nonetheless.
Wrong that you would say this. Threw out years everyone forgot who Hearns "The Boxer" Is. The problem here was that he had a bad habit of getting too into it, when he was clearly winning most of the rounds. In my opinion he could have easily outbox'd Hagler kept his disance against Leonard and had won. But he chose not to because that was the type of guy that he was.
Hearns didn't like to be roughed up on the inside and Hagler really brought it. Hearns had to spend as much energy as he did becuase he needed to land something big and get Hagler's respect, which didn't happen. Hagler didn't allow Hearns to box, he threw him out of his game plan by immediately going to the body and bringing the fight to him from the opening bell. Hagler was and would have always been a bad style match up for Hearns.
If there is anyone that Hearns had a shot at beating was Leonard and Barkely. He could have boxed Barkely is he had played it safe and didn't try to get him out. He was clearly winning the fight and dishing out a beating before he was caught cold in the 3rd round. He fadded against Leonard and was slowly broken down from Ray's body attack. He was easily out pointing him until round 8 when he was staggered. The fight started to shift from that point on. Tommy was horrible at pacing himself and reacting to being hurt.
When was this? Because Hearns has always had trouble fighting in the later rounds, even when he was in his peak at welterweight. In fact, all of his losses came in the hands of fighters that out lasted him. He also doesn't know how to tie up when he is hurt.

Duran was a 140 pounder who had the power to move up to middle weight and kick ass because there was no challenger. Thats what made Duran slightly better then the rest of the fab crew
Duran was a lightweight (135 pounds) and never fought at 140. He went from lightweight clear up to welter into title contention.
