This is the harcore fans dream fight, not so much for Joe Blow Iowa fan. So, how can Hbo really hype this fight up to appeal to the mainstream?
Cotto is becoming more popular ans his name is being spread out now, while Margarito is still a ?......... Obviously, a win over Cotto puts Margarito on the map, but Hbo will have to pull soem tricks out the hat to make this a very successful PPV..
Puerto Ricans and Mexicans will get it, but will the rest of the populace do so as well???

a countdown won't help cotto/margarito ppv numbers with mainstream america. in 1 corner you have a guy that doesn't speak english vs. another guy that barely speaks english. There is no selling point or story behind this fight other than the mexico vs. puerto rico rivalry and the only ones who care about that rivalry are mexicans and puerto ricans.
Yea I've been asking casual fans about the fight and they've heard of Cotto after his last fight, but they've never heard of Margarito. This fight will be luck to hit 250 K anything above that is a success. Hopefully when Cotto beats down the most overrated fighter in Boxing De La Hoya signs Cotto to Golden Boy Promotions ans sky rockets his career.
Cotto is not being promoted teh right way..... Righ now, i believe that Arum is too consumed with Pavlik.....Cotto should re evalute his contract with Arum, and explore his options.

Of course it will, that's why they make that investment, for the return. It's good to see Margarito finally headlining a PPV show.
He actually headlined against Manuel Gomez.............shit did very poorly. I bought it, so i showed some love.
This Fight is ONLY for the Hardcore Fans....
The Causal Fans Probably Recognized KIMBO SLICE more than both
Miguel Cotto and Margarito Put together... And That is the Problem....
This Fight has no promotion, No real buzz, and No face appeal for ESPN.
This fight is for the HARDCORE boxing fans only..
Simply Because BOB ARUM has done a terrible job in promoting both of their careers.
Margarito is a ??????
and Cotto is a tomato
And it's not their Fault, It's Bob Arum...
Cotto should be on Tito Status Right Now and he isnt....
Terrible Promotion on Behalf of BOB ARUM...!!!
This P.P.V will not go over 375 P.P.V Buys...
I'm slowly gettin my boys who ain't die hard fight fans on the bandwagon. They and the other fight fans I know are down for the fight. Anybody wit any interest at all in boxing should watch this shit. I got people who get free PPV's to chill wit, but even if they ain't around I'll have some people pool the dough wit me to get the fight. The countdown will help some. The news about PBF is spreadin quick and that might incline more people to check the fight out too.

i'll bet u they will be showing more of their highlights fights than actually following them...is not a bad idea neither.
well, now that Myweather is outta here, hbo has to mold this as the battle for being the man in the WW division.....
Margarito has very little highlights, just so much u can show Cintron...
How will HBo sell Margarito????
as the most avoided fighter?
or
the man on the cusp of greatness??
This is a problem.......cause no one really believes any of those 2 choices.
yes it is, thats why im kinda sad that these guys will not get the shine they deserve.
I think i was like one of the 20 guys that bought Margarito vs Gomez PPV........MArgarito has to shine or eklse its good bye. He blew his chance to make a staement against Williams, this fight is his last chance......
I still believe that Margarito is very overrated and he doesn't really have many fans. Cotto is selling the PPVs. The countdown show is just the formality to remind the usual PPV buyers that Cotto is having a big fight and that they should be ready to buy it. It probably helps the promotion, but I doubt it moves the numbers more than maybe 25,000-50,000 buys.
The countdown show is going to bang it into the audience's head that this fight is for welterweight supremacy and has the potential to be fight of the year. By the end of the countdown special, anyone who watched it will know that this is a very important fight that could be action-packed. Whether that translates into huge PPV sales is another question.
The Countdown will help the fight, most casual fans have already seen Cotto on PPV before and probably know a lil' bit about him, on the other hand this is going to be good exposure for Tony and will make the fight more appealing for the casuals, but let's be honest here, this fight is really tailor made for the hardcore boxing fans, period.

It's going to do something like 350,000-400,000 buys max. Margarito just doesn't bring any fans who don't already buy PPVs to the table. To a certain extent Cotto doesn't either. Look at Top Rank's most successful PPVs in recent years and that's probably the ceiling for this fight.
I would love to see one but if you are a true boxing fan you will order this fight regardless. The countdown will get the casual fan who may see it after watching entourage or something. A boxing fan, no matter what ethnicity, will order this fight.
