For such a small country they can sure produce major powerhouse fighters!
What also surprises me is how the Dominican Republic (a country which is next to PR) is unable to deliver the same punch!
Must be in the genes I guess...
I don't know if I'm in the majority or minority when it comes to my people sharing this viewpoint but I essentially disagree with alot of the things being said here. I believe we as a people are part of the US and should be happy and proud. Look at every other Latin American country next to us who is independent. Cuba, Mexico, DR, the entire Central America and South America. They are all messed up in many ways. Puerto Ricans need to ask themselves why don't we have it as bad as they do? It's pretty obvious to me and it IMO we shouldn't disrespect Americans and get this nationalistic pride in us when people ask us if we're Independent or part of the US. Just because some rednecks say the US "owns" Puerto Rico doesn't make it so and shouldn't be used as an excuse to hate any notion of us being part of the US. Puerto Ricans have fought and died side by side with Americans since WWI all the way up to the War on Terror and will continue to serve. My grandfather served in WWII in the Pacific Theatre and my father served in Vietnam. I believe to say one is Puerto Rican is to say I'm also American. Not one or the other but both. We should be happy in that fact and not have this false sense of only being able to be one and not the other. I am proud of being Puerto Rican and proud of being American. Being proud is often confused with considering those who aren't like you to be inferior to you. We should avoid this. Anyways I'm off my soap box. :boxing:
yea
that so true about Puerto Rico.
we r just great at boxing
but the Dominicans have some great baseball players tho
with guys like arod, manny ramirez, jose reyes ect....
so they got that sport for now lol
the puerto rican flag was created by puerto ricans living in new york city.
it was designed by antonio velez alvarado, who was in manhattan at the time.
what i said is true, so i dont know why you try to act as if youre correcting me, because i said WHY it was created, not WHERE
i thought puerto rico had the flag first, :ugh:.
No because Cuba had it since 1902 when they gained independence and Puerto Rico had it since 1952 when we became a commonwealth, but Cuba didn't invent or founded our flag, like a member said here it was to honor Cuba's since Puerto Rico and Cuba were handed to US at the same time in 1898 but Cuba shortly gained independence, while Puerto Rico became US territory until 1952 when we became a commonwealth.
ok, PR is not a country, it's a commonwelath. The USA owns are punk ass. Yes we have produced many great athletes and many great entertainers, but lets get something straight. DR is a baseball country. Nuff said. Pr is an island that receives all the benefits of belonging to the USA including welfare which we all know alot of pR's like it, Including members of my family. We talk about the PR flag.... People it looks like the Cuban flag because Cubans Founded that Flag, and the flag before that looked like the DR flag, so before we go critisicing the Dr's because they suck at fighting, look up your history

Actually, our flag is nearly identical to the Cuban flag, but with the colors inversed. The star represents a sole country, independence. Our flag looks that way because it was designed as a tribute to Cuba for reaching their independence.

I thought it was just that Puerto Rico's economy is so bad and people are so poor that the only 3 ways to get off the island are either be a boxer, baseball player, or musician
Well then you are very ignorant, no offense. Puerto Rico's economy is bad there's no doubt about it but at this moment which place has a good economy? No country except those in the European Union. Puerto Rico's economy is better than most countries and most states if they were independent countries, besides that Puerto Rico contributes 40 million to the US Tresury.
I don't know why people pride themselves on being apart of ANY race. Period. Don't be ashamed, but porud seems ridiculous. You didn't do anything. Didn't accomplish anything. You were born this way, possibly even by ACCIDENT. You can be happy, being something that you didn't dictate. But, proud? I never got that.
PR is not a country, it is part of the US.
Theyre awesome when it comes to boxing though, thats for sure. So many great fighters, past and present.
PR is represented in the Olympics as it's own country, if that matters to you.
Dominican Republic has a bunch of great athletes too not just Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico's large numbers in proboxing is largely cultural.
Boxing is a major sport in Puerto Rico and part of its general culture so many males participate in it at some point in there youth and allows for talent to be discovered and nurtured.
In DR baseball, not boxing, is a major sport and part of there culture with all other sports coming in a very distant second. Many Dominican males will at some point in there youth participate in baseball allowing for the talented to be discovered and nurtured. The result is you see a disproportionate amount of Dominicans in MLB.
Boxing isn't as big in the Dominican Republic.. the power houses are usually places that put much emphasis on the sport.. Contrary to popular belief Mexico isn't big on boxing either.
It's only big in the capital city and some of the northern states.. this is why there isn't much champions from southern Mexico.
That's 100% true. I'm the only one in my large family that actually watches boxing. My family in Mexico doesn't even follow boxing. A cuople of my friends are casual boxing fans but that's it. The Northwest states of sonora and sinaloa along with d.f. is where some of the action is. Mexico is a soccer country.
Puerto Rico for being a small island has produced 55 World Champions and will most likely produce a 56th if Juanma Lopez wins the fight on June 7, I think it has to do with our character because Puertoricans have agressive characters, you don't want to mess with a puertorican, honestly we will beat you up. But I am proud of my country for producing so many World Champions in the greatest sports.

I'm very impressed wit my own race. I mean for being such a small percentage of the U.S. population most Great American boxers are black kid.
You can thank white people for trying to breed "supernegroes" during slavery for your people dominating just about every athletic sport. You could go through the entire continent of africa and only find a handful of guys as big as the average black american

Although I would like for Puerto Rico to be considered it's own country (independent, while remaining with a democratic ideology and allied with the US), Puerto Rico is not a country, it's a commonwealth, meaning that we have our own everything but we still respond to the US in terms of federal funds and military purpuses, so we aren't part of the US but we are not a country either, although that they will come, the day when the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is called the Republic of Puerto Rico will be the day we will be a country.
