Is this a good or bad rating? That is just who tuned in, in the U.S, the Versus network, that does not include Sky Box Office. I dont think its too bad since it was during the afternoon. Night time would double the numbers i think. Not bad for putting higher profile boxing
Those seem like decent numbers for a network like Versus, which is known mostly to hockey fans. Really it depends on how much they paid for the fight to know whether it was a good investment. Also I'd like to know their ratings for NHL games for comparison.
To repeat: There’s something very wrong with the economic model at HBO Sports when the network pays a $2,850,000 license fee for Hatton-Urango and Versus pays roughly five percent of that amount for a doubleheader pairing Hatton-Lazcano with Malignaggi-N’dou.

Think of it this way...
They only did 100,000 less than Cotto/Gomez...
Which was on HBO during a regular slot...
This was during the afternoon in a different country and barely promoted...
The numbers are impressive...
You're wrong, it's not even close. A single national ratings point represents one percent of the total number, or 1,128,000 households for the 2006-07 season.
His last outing against Alfonso Gomez in Atlantic City did one of the lowest ratings ever (2.1) for an HBO World Championship Boxing telecast.
Cotto = 2,368,800
Hatton = 281,000
I think those are fair numbers but not what they expected. I say fair because it still on cable and not free tv and as other mentioned the timing and advertisments weren't many.
Thanks for that info. If they didn't lose a lot of money it was worth is for Versus since it helped raise their profile.
Even if they lost money on it, if it raised their profile it could be worth it in the long run especially if they want to upgrade their boxing brand. Taking a loss to gain prestiege is not unheard of.
Cotto-Gomez had 1.1 million viewers.
The article pegs the broadcast at around ~$150K for Versus.
Versus gets around 250K viewers for regular season NHL games; playoff games get more than double that.

im definately inclined to agree with this statement.
I think its very good numbers considering the obvious:
A) hatton headlined the card and isnt an american fighter or a fighter who has consistantly appeared on american tv throughout his career.
B) both Paulie and Ricky were having tune-up fights
C) it came on free tv on channel not widely known for having big names or good cards
D) it came on at 12:30PM westcoast time and 3:30PM east coast time (which isnt a popular slot for boxing in america)
E) The card recieved little to no promotion in the U.S.
I think it did VERY well considering all those things...if it were promoted better i think it could have beat out cotto v. gomez.
I REALLY HOPE the free networks (even just VS and ESPN) have bigger cards (like that one) in the future...it can really take a bite out of this PPV nonsense and HOPEFULLY even if boxing can't 100% return to free tv a great deal of good fights can still be seen for free...and i think it helped the casual fan well (even though it didnt provide knockouts) the fights werent one sided as many predicted.
Yea i do not think it is to bad. Cable numbers are a lot different then network numbers. I was suprised by how little this fight got promoted, it was barely on the Versus website. i saw a couple commercials when i was watching hockey but they were advertising WEC way more. Thay paid low 6 figures for this fight which is pretty close to what they pay Bob Arum for the fights he does on the network.
I would not call the numbers great but you can only expect so much fighting on an obscure network with little promotion on said network and virtually no promotion that wasn't on the network.

You are the only person on this forums I guess who reads and cites BoxingConfidential.
well i know most of their shit is based on opinion. But i dont think you can make those numbers up

i must have about 1000 channels and i dont think i have "versus"
Yeah man I also don't have Versus.
I had to download the fight later, but considering the fee Versus paid and the decent rating for the time slot I would think it was a success.
kind of funny because certain people, dont need to be named, keep claiming that Hatton was chosen over Cotto because Hatton has more pull in America Marketing wise. This is clearly not the case.
alot of people dont have VS for one, for two it wasnt one HBO, ask someone what channel the stanley cup playoffs are on and they couldnt even tell you. Hatton has more pull just based on the fact that hes a white man in a marquee fight who was being sold as a legit competitor, not to mention, cottos ratings on HBo werent any better, regardless, hatton/mayweathers live ppv made them both alot of money, so thas why the fight was made, period.
