For those of you who keep going back to Cotto getting hurt against Torres and Corley or getting rocked by Zab Judah....as a way to explain a victory for Margarito.
It has been reported that Margarito suffered knockdown's against 3 different fighters:
Danny Perez (a guy Daniel Santos tko'd in 7) , Miguel Gonzalez (Tijuana defeated him by Split decision) and most importantly Juan Soberanes by a body shot.(Imagine if Cotto puts some of those bodyshots on him.) Margarito defeated all those guys by decision. Cotto knocked his guys out.
Just something to consider.
And I'll remind you again that he was knocked down when he was young and did not have enough experience, expect for maybe the body shot KD(Which is why I said Cotto would be more effective attacking Tony's body).
Now you're saying Cotto CAN hurt him, which is what I agree with. You said earlier that Cotto would knock him out based on those kd's, which was laughable.
And is the Ali comparison that hard to understand? When Ali was getting tagged by Frazier with all those left hooks, he didn't use his defence either. He was hit without going down very often, showing his granite chin. Margarito doesn't need slick Whitaker defense. His chin and style is good enough to take anything on the head.
And that's where we disagree on. Which is why I a gave you the recent Samuel Peter example. He was known to have a hard chin until McCline checked that.
I never officially said Cotto was gonna knock him out. I predict a 117-111 type decision in favor of Cotto but I wouldn't be suprised if he got Margarito out of there.
Let me remind you again. Margarito got knocked down 3 times, once by a bodyshot. So the above in blue is wishful thinking. Cotto can hurt him just as he can hurt Cotto.
Oh in case you try to use the Muhamad Ali getting knocked down story again........Ali has defence.....Margarito doesn't.
True Story.

I don't know what your criteria is for bodypunching but he has shown it in the Quintana fight. He showed it against Malignaggie. It's part of his arsenal of weapons and he uses it in all of his fights. It doesn't mean scoring bodypunch knockouts fight after fight but using it to chop your opponent down time and time to a TKO. He is the best bodypuncher at 147.
Thats only two fights you pointed out. the Quintanna fight who wouldn't hit him in the body when hes litterly giving you the body to hit him there. I don't know, but i know when Cotto was coming up, i thought there were going to work more on his combination to the body and head, I thought he was going to be a great up and down fighter but lately seems like he's in love with his power and his boxing which is sick(as in not good) a power puncher going backwards? why? just don't understand it and sometimes makes for boring fights or semi-boring fighter(see mosley fight)
Only once have i said, "wow, cotto is a great body puncher" and that was in Cottos early fights.
Him back pedaling really makes the fight look borring. I got my brother to order the Mosley fight and man was i praying for some action, the room was quit untill Mosley started to fight in the 8th round.
If Cotto shows he is able to muscle in with Margarito, then the problem will be can he take the shows continuesly. And Cotto is not fast on his feet. And Margarito timing is under rated, once Cotto starts getting hit repeatedly by timed shots by Margarito, he'll be saying wtf. Margarito uses his reach more then he is given credit for.

By actually watching his fights, that's how.
.
Are you sure you watched the Mosley/Cotto fight. Because I was sure I saw Cotto still landing some decent shots while backing up. Comparing it to the pure running Oscar did against Tito is just ridiculous.

Cotto is going to have to box Margarito in order to win. He trys them bodyshots Margarito is coming back from a top. Margaritos defence has gotten better and will be tighter against Cotto.
I don't understand where Cotto gets the image of great body puncher, never really seen him as a great body puncher i know i used to think he could really become a great combination puncher but he never seemed to work on that.

Cottos lucky to have gotten the decision against Mosley, people call what Cotto did boxing, lol, the guy was back pedalling. If what Delahoya did against Trinidad is called running then Cotto was running.

It will be a tough fight for both guys but i think Margarito has more brute strength over Cotto and will take the win. Just as some say Cotto can bang to the body, Margarito can do just the same.
Has Cotto been tested to the body?

Against Mosely Cotto proved he could have with the top guys but he was still going back wards not forward and got stunned a few times too.
We'll just have to see how the fight turns out.
Considering Cotto has NEVER been knocked down, and Tony has kissed the canvas three times, WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU NEED A POLL FOR?
You people can't add? I guess MATH, logic and some sound reasoning skills are not needed when one aspires to be a JARDINERO/GARDENER, right?
What happend to the Common Sense Brother Hood?
Fools are acting more like MARGARITA NUTHUGGERS rather then real people with any common sense.
1st person in this thread to talk shit about races instead of talking about the match up. And he's representing puerto rico.

very good valid point.
And in my opinion Cotto has been in there with tougher competition and is still undefeated...so think about that.
I dont know why some view cotto as a walk in the park...because he's definately not.
This will easily be the toughest fight of margarito's career...
And vise versa. Cotto hasn't seen anything like Margarito, anyone as big and strong, durable, heart etc. That's why this can become such a great fight.
And if you read my post you would know I did mention Cotto's abilities. I think he can outbox Tony from the outside with the jab, and be effective on the inside with his body punches. But Margarito will force Cotto to fight, and there will probably be some trading because of their nature. This is where Margarito CLEARLY has the upperhand. He's bigger and stronger, has a better chin, is much more active while Cotto has better defense. Their power is debatable. Basicely if there's anybody that might get stopped it's Cotto. Because if he wants to knock out Margarito he will have to fight his fight and that's where Tony will dominate him.

All that longwinded typing and you fail to point out one simple fact. Margarito hasn't seen anything like Cotto in his career. He has seen power punchers, but not as accurate as Cotto. You talk about Margarito's abilities but you fail to mention Cotto's. Margarito has no defense and like Samuel Peter showed, you can get your chin checked and get tko'd if you don't D' up.

vladimir303, you should have responded to me in this thread.
I was not comparing Ali and Margarito as fighters. I was comparing their situations regarding their chins. It was just the first example that came to my mind.
Another is Oscar De La Hoya, who was also knocked down early in his career when he was more inexperienced and wilder, and like I said, probably not fully matured yet. Later on in his career, he developed a great ability to take a punch, and so his stock in this department grew as well.
Same thing with Antonio Margarito. Over the past few years he has taken tremendous punches without flinching, been hurt slightly and recovered very quickly etc. He has shown and proven to be able to take anything on the chin and overcome it 9 out of 10 times.
It's not just his chin that's excellent. It's his style as well. He does not allow his opponents to get room/distance to load up on him. He's right on top of them. That's how Cintron's power became non-existent.
In Cotto's case, I think he would have to hurt margarito to the body. He's very effective on the inside as well, so apart from boxing Tony from the outside he still has his body attack to fall back to on the inside.
All in all, I think this fight goes the distance in favor of Cotto, or Margarito stops Cotto late. Unless something amazing happens, Margarito will fight the full 12 rounds. If Cotto is careful and sticks to his gameplan, which I think he will, he will be able to survive as well.

The Castillo fight is a mute point..because Floyd will just do to Cotto what he did to Castillo in the rematch.
That fight was 9 years ago..you dont think Floyds gotten any better??
gtfo
what run away from him so he dont keep getting nailed on the ropes with right hands

The body is ALWAYS vulnerable, when people say that Cotto's chin wont hold up, you have to remember how hittable Margarito's body will be on the inside should he really press the fight. Margarito would do well to fight the big man's fight from the outside.
The thing is, I'm not even a Cotto fan. You made yourself look stupid.
Try not to get all homotional next time when you're being slapped in the face with simple facts.
Nor is he as fast as Torres. Remember you have to have enough speed to throw and land a punch. Cotto has been tested against some of the fastest fighters and he has come through.
i don't care for you much as a poster but you're right.all the dudes that rocked cotto have really fast hands.margo doesn't have fast hands.
and you are not a cotto fan,so calling you a cottosexual is in accurate.
there is no pass. this is just observation. Cotto WAS HURT by Judah..
thats your oppinion you don't know for a fact that he was hurt plus if he was hurt he did a good job dominating that fight for a hurt man
Cotto was weeble wobbled by Corley, dropped by Torres and just stunned a couple times by Judah. these KD Margarito suffered were a long time ago. I THINK THATS THE POINT :duh:
Marg was just hit FLUSH BY CINTRON, PW AND Clottey and was never once hurt, THIS WAS PRETTY RECENTLY..
:puppy_dog
clottey was outboxing margarito before he hurt his hand and williams just finished out boxing margarito a year ago, cotto has never been outboxed
