This is a realistic view on it. So check it, Americans are a lazy society. That's a truth, anything else would be in denial. So, what would Americans prefer? Sports that involve less effort. A sport that the average fat beer drinking American can imagine he'd have a chance in participating in, if he dropped his beer can and got off the couch. MMA, gives the feeling anyone has a chance. You see these fat fighters that have decent stamina and can punch, and that's the chance of hope for these fat people that watch the sport. Heck, not even fat people, but people who are average but think they can win in a street fight can win in MMA because it doesn't involve something boxing has in a huge abundance. STAMINA. If it involves too much effort, the American won't try it or want to watch it because he knows he can't participate. Look at Football. They love it because, it involves sprinting and not a constant pace. Something anyone can participate in for fun. Boxing involves way too much for the average joe. :boxing:
By the way, there are obviously more reasons, but I just thought I'd state one reason that came to mine. Also, I'm American, born here, so don't think it's hate or anything. Just stating some facts.
I think theres a number of reasons why MMA is getting more and more popular.
-Its more consistently entertaining. Watching undercards of boxing can be so boring, but many undercard fights on MMA are absolute crackers.
-Theres only one major league (UFC). This means you have all the best fighters in the world vying for one belt. None of this 3 belt business, where all the contracts and promoters and licenses get in the way of seeing the best fight the best. This is easily the biggest problem with boxing.
-No major focus on having a 'goose egg' record. In MMA it doesn't matter if you lose so much, you can fight again in under 6 months for your rematch or whatever. In boxing there is some major value on being 'undefeated' and as such, boxers often duck fights that are deemed 'too risky'.
-UFC will make you fight the best or sack your ass. Any true fighter should be willing to do that. In boxing there is too much politics and we don't often see enough of our favourite fighters.
I'll always truly respect boxing as an art form, but for me UFC format is just more fun.
mma's best fighter fedor, if hes not the best hes def one of the best and guess what, hes fat. Isn't ufc's heavyweight champ or former champ silva the guy from iowa a fat dude, isn't the guy from brazil who silva beat to win the heavyweight belt back 3-4 years ago, wasn't he fat too, do you want me to go on and on? Mostly everybody on here just talks shit, just shut up

fights are like 15 minutes and usually less,so you need to concentrate for so little time.it's like mtv,3 minutes for one video,3 minutes for another one.
MMA is the MTV of sports :luvbed:
first off all, MMA and boxing has fat fighters.
the Elite MMA organizations have very little fat fighters just like there are very few fat Elite boxers.
And there is a ton of skill in both sports. I hate it when people say otherwise or compare MMA to boxing and vise versa. they are very different sports.
MMA has gotten popular because of the success for the UFC..The UFC has marketed and promoted their fighters and events very very well. and the number one thing that hooked people is the Ultimate Fighter show and the deal with spike tv...the Fertitta brothers(owners of the UFC) were looking into selling until the success of the show.
The UFC(along with the other MMA ORG's) have complete control over their product and generally can make the fights they want. Instead of a promoter bargining with another promoter to make a fight. The top fighters can fight other top fighters more and quicker because of this.
Also their event's are more action packed, you get 5-8 fights that can end by ko/tko, or submission. People love this, generally people like blood over skill, a devastating haymaker over a skillful counter punch.
bottom line is people can watch 5-8 fights with the possibility KO/TKO, Submission: names they recognize: Championship belts that mean something:and superstar match ups.
All in one event.
Fans can follow the fighters better.
they know the prospects, the bums, the superstars, the gatekeepers.
NOW.....in 5 years it will be interesting to see if MMA is still doing good.
the amount of different organizations that are sprouting up. i think will cause MMA to revert to something similar to boxing. Each Organization will have its own stable of fighters
UFC
Elite XC
Dream
HCF
WEC
...
...
..
and so on
they will become like boxing promoters.(Golden boy, Don Kind, Bob Arum....ect)
and eventually they may have to deal with the other organizations to make alot of match ups the fans want. and the tv deals some of them have will not only cover one organization, they will cover the whole sport.
They will come across many of the problems boxing has now. I am curious to see how they will deal with that.
i know. im not trying to argue with you. I LOVE BOXING, and I respect MMA/UFC and watch it at times. My bro is big into it.
I was emailing back n forth with some dude from **********...com and we were having a debate about the popularity of UfC and it seems that most boxing fans are a little biased or mis informed about the subject.
I don't know much about it...but I have tried to watch it and I can't watch beyond 10 minutes. I get a little touchy when I see topics about MMA v Boxing or when I hear a MMA person call out a boxer. Nothing comes close to boxing for me. It does pee me off when I read that it's basically muscling in on boxing.
doghouse boxing? ofcourse a boxing site will say something like that.
Fine, I don't care, I've got no real interest in MMA to even query or look in depth about the validity of some statements.
where did you read that its because of the white fighters? Brazillians ( Gracies) pretty much started the UFC and the P4P best fighter in the world is a black Brazilian, Anderson Silva.
its because they know how to market there priduct better and on a PPV they usually have 5-6 very entertaining fights
I've read this several places and I also read it on doghouse boxing. I know very little about the sport so I wouldn't know whether that's true or not.
I read that it's because there are a lot of white fighters in MMA and that the white demographic of 15-34 year olds (or something like that) that follows it.
Then you neve read, EVEN NOT FAT FIGHTERS. Shit, when I mentioned that, it was a quick example of a fat guy sitting on couch watching it. I didn't mean every fighter in MMA was fat, just some of those heavies I see that are there just cause they got a good punch. Obviously a lot are in shape, but I'm saying, the idea that you can see this fat dude fighting in MMA and win because he can knock someone out, gives the chance of feeling good being fat and thinking you can knock someone out easily in MMA, even if you got no stamina. You get me? But, I'm not talkin bad about fat peoples or hating on them, I'm just using as example.
Even using them as an example doesn't credit your statement. Many HW also have great ground game. Most of their fights go to the ground also. So just that statement discredits your whole thread. Your speaking for many MMA fighters with no facts. No one enters UFC thinking they are just going to trade shots. You need to practice in all aspects of MMA. If someone takes you to the ground and your not good on the ground then your in trouble. Atleast if you post don't think everyone here is going to agree
First off the person who started the thread is talking nonsense. No one says you can go into MMA being fat and expect to win because your just going to stand up and punch with them. It isn't like that. MMA fighters must stay in shape. Being fat or not has nothing to do with skill
i stopped reading at "fat fighters".
this dudes biased beyond belief.

Why do people post mma crap on NSB???
We dont give a fukk about that shyt.
No disrespect to the thread starter, but MMA and boxing is not even comparable imo.
im guessing the MMA powers that be has chosen you as their publicist/PR man. how much you make mayn?
You don't need to be a rocket science to know a sport you watch. I watch both sports and know about both of them. You just need to know what your talking about which in this case doesn't seem like you no much of what you're doing
So because Dana White doesn't like boxing, it's ok to speak out about a sport that you don't no about? Dana is just doing it for his business. It doesn't mean you have to talk about MMA because the UFC is only one organization out of many. It is dominating the MMA sport but you shouldn't base you opinion on MMA purely on Dana and his comments. It is a market strategy what he does

I welcome mma but it is a less worthy sport whenever I hear shit like so and so can beat mayweather in a streetfight I just want to puke. Just because he can fight on the ground doesn't mean shit but people don't understand that. It's also very easy to learn mma I done it a couple of times and learn just as much as the people who were doing it for a long time at this gym. You can't do that in boxing
