But when They Say "Name one fighter on Floyd's resume that cotto couldn't beat, and I'm not saying welterweight, that's way way way too easy. pick any fighter of his record regardless of weight, and give me a strong argument why cotto would loose. you make your name and prove your abilities when you beat name and fighters around, in his earlier days Floyd beat some decent fighters, but ability wise, he didn't beat anyone that cotto couldn't handle this is not a Floyd-hate, votto-love thread, this is a real question for fans of both guys. And I reply with: ... Cotto has never beaten anybody for a belt... he always fights for vacant belts... I think Prime for Prime, pound for pound. Cotto is better or at least equal to Castillo though. In not only body punching, but in everything. But like I said, it's hard to compare.

Without comparison both cotto and mayweather have great records, but this is my question:After his last fight mayweather was asked what about cotto? and he answered i have nothing else to prove!?!?nothing else to prove !the division still had great fighters who were willing to fight him and cotto was one . How do you solidify a good legacy by retiring when the greatest fighters are there and the people are craving these match ups. the truth is nobody can answer that question but floyd and here we are defending and at each others necks when the reality is he probably ducked cotto cause he knew he was the only one with a chance agianst him . and you'll say tell that to margarito , and i'll say at least he didnt duck him. NO way Cotto makes it out undefeated if he had to fight all the guys Mayweather fought before he was 24/25, Cotto was extremely guarded/maneuvered into most of his fights very carefully by Bob Arum...Whereas Arum didnt do that with Mayweather because Mayweather doesnt need to be protected, He was just too good which makes Arum put him in fights that most promoters wouldnt have done in any fighters early career. Now that Reality have hit these fans...Lets see how they answer this thread now...

I guess the only point I would make is that you wouldn't bring Cotto up through that resume as early as you would Floyd. He's really developed chronologically a few years later than Floyd did, it's a much different style. You really don't want to bring up a fighter faster than you should. But does that speak to a fighter's ultimate potential? The Cotto story is far from written yet, let's see if he gets through Margarito this Saturday and in what fashion. And he probably still needs a few more challenging fights, so that his status can really reach the higher levels. Do I think Cotto get's through Floyd's resume a year or 2 later than Floyd did? Sure. Do I think he beats Floyd now? Probably not Do I think a year from now, with say 3-4 more victories to further develop? Maybe. For sure if he gets that far he'll pose the biggest challenge. But it's probably not going to happen. It would require a victory over Margarito and Oscar to create the kind of marketability to make it even feasible for Floyd to consider, given he walked away from the Oscar bout. In terms of comparisons though, Saturday's bout is very critical for Cotto IMO.
