this is a thread for serious objective posters. The fact is, he beat Hopkins. Just like Pacquiao can boast a win over JMM even though many thought JMM won, Cal can boast a win over Hopkins. How do you feel Joe Cal's resume is now?
Winky was 20 pounds above where he should be........get serious...you know that.
Winky is an ATG and a has a better resume then Calzaghe as well.
This shows you as being more stupid than the comment about Lacy, Kessler and Eubank being nobodies.
So Hopkins becomes a 'legend' and 'ATG' by beating nobodies (of which he's had his fair share), other legends who have come up 20 pounds higher than they should be (Wright, Trinidad, DLH), a genuine top contender (in Tarver) and losing to any truly top guy who is naturally around his weight range (RJJ, Calzaghe and Taylor).
Calzaghe does all the same stuff but better, he beats the nobodies, he beats people who are quite small for the weight, he beat genuinely top contenders for his title in Lacy, he beat genuinely top fighters in Eubank and Kessler and he beat Hopkins himself...the only difference is that he hasnt lost whereas Hopkins has...5 times. Yet Hopkins is the legend and Calzaghe is nothing?
I would like to have some kind of an option between average and all time great material. Very good maybe? That would be my choice.
Agree about the options. Calzaghe will definitely go down as an All Time Great, his career just wont necessarily be entirely recognised until he beats a couple more top people, or retires, at which point it will become remembered much better in retrospect.
He needs to beat pavlik, tarver and jones, like others have said, in order to become a real "legend killer". :boxing: :boxing:
Woah, Pavlik and Tarver are "legends?"
I dont think he is ATG material. Calzaghe said he wants to be the "legend killer". From fighting Hopkins and wanting RJJ he should be calling it, "over the hill legend killer".
What is this guy smoking. Calling out a WAY past his prime fighter. RJJ is an ATG. Although I think he should have retired 2 years ago. He beat Felix but a blown up version fighting way too heavy. I hoped he would retire after the Hanshaw fight, he looked like crap in that fight to me.
If he wants to impress me he needs to fight someone thats not almost all the way down the backside of the mountain. Pavlik or Taylor maybe?
"Legend Killer" hahahahaha. So Kevin McBride was a legend killer for beating an elderly mike tyson?
are you a idiot? chris eubank is a nobody? wtf !
Yeah, he's probably American. Can you imagine if Benn and Eubank were from the US? The praise they'd get would be unimaginable, but because they are British.....'they're not as good as people suggest'.
Idiots.
The Hopkins fight will really hurt any P4P legitimacy he's credited for now in the future. I voted average, but this is silly though, Joe IS going to go down as an ATG for what he's done at SMW.
I don't follow, why will P4P legitimacy be hurt in the future for beating the LHW number one, becoming top in yet another division?
You seem to be rating on what some other peoples perceptions might be, even predicting, rather than rating what you think. Have some faith old boy! :o
As far as I and most are concerned, the increasing majority accept Joe fully deserves jumping up two positions to the number 3 in the world, P4P slot.
Hopkins has only helped his resume, and the predictable age excuses don't cut it, it suites Hops style and he's beaten top guys and been very competitive post 40.
Joe could do with more names, but he's begging the question, who determines what are big names? He caned Lacy and Manfredo, whom many think were bigger names and things on his resume, than Reid, Mitchell, Bika, Woodhall and others. People and especially pro boxers are now looking back and re assessing and aligning they're views on the fighters on Joes' resume.
Kessler was over all tougher than Hopkins though isn't as big a name in many a peoples eyes, why, he is bigger and better!
Resume could be better but it's still pretty good, has improved with a win over Hopkins whom many top guys struggled to pull off and often didn't, and will continue to get bigger as people re assess they're views on his resume and fighting another big name next.

Calzaghe's resume is good for this generation but not all time great.
I don't think its an all time great resume. A great resume is more precise.
Even if he does beat Roy, i'm still not sure i'll call it an all time great resume due to criticism on how post-prime certain opponents were.
I will never knock Calzaghe for who he beat or how he beat them.
He has impressive names on there.....but not enough.
Hopkins is an ATG fighter...
Kessler, Lacy and Eubank are NOBODIES.
WTF, seriously dumbest statement I have read for a long while on here.
In response to the question, the guy has reigned undefeated as a Champion for over 10 years, prior to the Lacy fight, his resume was questioned and many thought Lacy would win, Calzaghe gave him a boxing lesson and completely outclassed him, then apparently Lacy was overrated???, then against Kessler again some thought Kessler was too fast too young and after Calzaghe beat him Kessler then became overrated???
He did what everyone wanted, came to the States and fought a true great in front of his home crowd with home officials and beat him and now Hopkins was too old or he was robbed???
Is a joke to be honest and in certain ways it was similar to Lennox Lewis who dominated the Heavyweight division yet is not rated by many as a Top Ten all time heavyweight???
Calzaghe's record and career will be dissected in years to come and it will be agreed that what he has achieved is extra ordinary by dominating his division, making weight and maintaining the levels and ability's his still shows today without jumping up and down the weights or fighting much smaller men who happen to have a name.
Of course he is an all time great if for nothing else at all for being arguably the greatest Super Middle of all time.
I wish could vote for two. I think t is ATG material in the way that he will go down as the number 1 or 2 in the 168 division (as of now) but at the same time it is lacking big name power.
I said ATG but in reality he needs wins against Jones and Pavlik and even the biggest anti calz people will have a hard time questioning his greatness.
Although that Pavlik fight doesn't look that makeable and in my mind there is no point making a Dawson fight, it would be a boring fight and Dawson is not the man at this division.
I would like to have some kind of an option between average and all time great material. Very good maybe? That would be my choice.
In just 2 or 3 fights it could be great, depends on what he does in the LHW division.
Winky was 20 pounds above where he should be........get serious...you know that.

When did Winky fight at 150?
Calzaghe beat a guy that beat Winky. Understand?
