his top 5 is:
1. Ali
2. Leonard
3. Duran
4. Roy Jones Jr.
5. Mayweather
He's in town and always wants to talk boxing with me.
His thoughts on Calzaghe/Hopkins:
"I have only seen Hopkins fight one other time and that was against Trinidad. He fought beautifully and even if he was the same size as Trinidad, the fight would had ended the same way. He is just a better fighter. But what I saw in that fight against that guy from England wasnt the same. He kept turning his back and running away at times. You know what they used to do in Mexico back then? Anytime you turned your back, the ref would give you a count because they took at as you submitting. If you kept doing it, you would be disqualified. The other guy couldnt even throw a punch right so there was no need for the black guy to run. He should have put him away."
On Cotto/Gomez:
"Gomez was too green for Cotto. Gomez is a good fighter. I saw his fight with Gatti and also against another black guy and he showed he belong at the professional level, just not Cotto's level. No adjustment in the world would had helped Gomez in that fight. Cotto is just on a completely different level."
*he said he saw the Tackie fight on a station in Mexico. Wierd cuz i didnt know ESPN lended rights to fights like that*
On De La Hoya/Forbes:
"De La Hoya just isnt the same fighter anymore. He doesnt have the hunger to push himself, to really want it. When you have that much money, when you have many other priorities other than boxing, it is impossible to have the same will and determination you had when all you had was boxing. The SKILL may be there, but if you're heart isnt in it, all the skill in the world won't matter. He is a better business man now than he is a boxer. Who is he fighting again?"
I told him who Steve Forbes was and he gave me a weird look.
Then I told him why he was fighting Forbes, which is a tune up for Mayweather again, he game me another weird look.
On Floyd Mayweather:
"De La Hoya can fight Mayweather 20 times and Mayweather would win all 20 times. The same De La Hoya who beat Vargas would get beat by Mayweather 20 times. Mayweather is one of the best fighters I've ever seen. He would had been successful in any era. Leonard would have had trouble with Floyd and I doubt he would win convincingly."
yeah, cant say i agree with EVERYTHING my grandpa says but i respect and listen when he says something.
damn, more ali #1 shit. i mean, i hardly ever hear people, everyday people i mean a bit more specificaly, mention guys like rocky marciano or jack johnson as #1 on their list.
seriously, it's the hype i keep talking about. that shit gets into people's subconsciousness and stays there. for most of ali's career, it was ali himself calling himself the greatest. why? well because, like most people today, there were still fascinated with the guys from the years before.
this is not to say ali wasn't a great or anything like that.
The only thing my Grandad ever told me was that 'on the end of everyman who has a ponytail is an asshole'
........true.
i think that saying is true for ponys as well.
In terms of talent Floyd is an ATG, but he's got unfinished business in the WW division to handle right now before he truly becomes a legendary fighter. Not facin his top challengers in his prime will get his long term legacy shit on.
Floyd is far from an All Time Great.
Thank him for the bolded. It's not just Hopkins but a number of other fighters as well. Some of their 'defense' should count as a KD
its not the first time i mention that.

i didnt ask why he didnt see hopkins much before but if you used that syphilis infested sponge you call a brain, it would makes sense.
Trinidad wasnt only a PR star but a latino star. he's seen a shitload of Trini fights so it would only make sense that he saw Bernard against Trinidad. but of course your simple ass mind wouldnt have been able to make that connection. i'd love to play a game of connect 4 against you.
as far a gomez fights, my grandpa has HBO latino in mexico and if your dumbass actually followed boxing instead of just repeating what people say on this forum to actually make it seem like you have an original opinion to contribute, you'd know that Gomez fought Gatti on HBO. As far as the Tackie fight, i know some networks in mexico show fights that are broadcasted on American networks.
god you are a complete imbecile.
hahahhahahahaha. And your grandpa was dead on when he said Calzaghe doesn't punch right. Any objective person can see that when you punch with the heels of your hands something is wrong. And he was right about hopkins.
sall good, i never said my grandpa didnt like any of the fighters you mentioned. i just listed who he likes personally. im never going to question his logic or opinion. dude is 83 and can only hear out of one ear. he does have a poster of Sanchez that he has saved up by the way. Regardless, i dont expect anyone to believe what i type, but im just relayin info he told me on to the forum. remember, it is yall who are assuming all these discrepancies which i havent even mentioned. and even though you may know old timers from mexico, everything is different. according to one poster here, Boxing isnt even a big sport in Mexico.
Most people here in Oxnard(even though very good fighters have came out of here or train here) most Mexicans(from Mexico) seem to rather talk soccor. So he may be right. Last i went to TJ, everybody said that Margaritos gym is around the block but i never did find the gym.
Sorry 2501 but i have to call bullshit. I don't hate on you, you know this. But if your grandpa was 83 then he'd have seen some of the truly great Mexican fighters. And none are on his list, lol.
Not even the famous Olivaras, Zarate, Chavez, not even Sanchez? Or Napoles whom Mexicans loved to see him fight. Not even Finito Lopez? Or Chicquita Gonzalez? Lupe Pintor?
I have to say your story is made up.
When these fighters have been ultimate warriors and they don't even get a mention by your grandpa, then i call that first post b.s.
I've meet and talked to many old timers from Mexico, and they love there Mexican fighters. That basicly all they got to see boxing on tv. They would tell me boxers names that i ain't ever heard of but to them these guys were there heroes and you would think by the way they described them they were great fighters. Thats why i find it odd that your grandpa has only mentioned these guys.

Your grandpa seems to know more facts about boxing than you do.
i dont agree with the mayweather and DLH thing. i feel that regardless of how much money DLH has, he wants to prove that his career wasnt just an accumulation of "what if's". my opinion with DLH isnt a matter of will, but rather a matter of ability. his will and determination may be there, but his physical capability may not.
as far as mayweather, the day i put him in the top 10 will be the day i swear off women and call myself Rogelio Domain.

Old people tend to have mad delusions in their Golden years.

he's only seen hopkins fight once but he's seen gomez fight twice :wtf:
I think this is really you talking :nonono: poor kid.......
If his grandfather saw Hopkins vs. Trinidad and then was able to comment on the difference of how Hopkins fought now from then, I would imagine he's seen Hopkins twice and was just saying he'd only seen Hopkins fight once before.
