Obviously they all had good years, but some were clearly better than others.
I personally find Glen Johnson beating Clinton Woods, Roy Jones Jr. and Antonio Tarver in 2004 to be more impressive than Floyd Mayweather Jr. beating Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton in 2007. Which one do you think is the best since 2000?
you are joking right?so 2 knockdowns in the first round vs vargas where dirty tactics?you my friend need to take of those biased glasses on because you clearly have some other motive for disliking tito as obvious for your avatar.
that's not what he referred to as dirty. Tito got knocked down, and a few seconds later low-blowed Vargas. bought him time and got him in a cheap-shot.
that isn't dirty????:ugh:
Vargas had 20 I recall, he'd won the title on 15 against Campas. But you're pretty on the money, Vargas was still a relative pup, he shoulda had a couple more fights, that being said Tito woulda always exposed his dodgy chin. And I had Vargas taking over from 3-5 but after that Trinidad pretty much began to dominate (after low blows, ouch 'Nando felt them)
oh, hey, yeah
this thread is going to show the lack of objectivity some posters have. good one Deiwizzle.
Lol, considering who I voted for, I don't know what you are talking about!
Shoutout to Felix Trinidad in 2000 too.
Undefeated Reid, one loss some guy I've never heard of, and undefeated Vargas. Reid and Vargas alone is a great year, and fighting a nobody can't actually hurt that, and considering he only had one loss, I can't imagine that it doesn't get him at least a fraction more of credit.
No way. Both Reid and Vargas were real young and, short of a few timely low-blows, he almost got KOd by Fernando.
eh, I voted for Toney, but Im kind of having second thoughts on it...
but Jirov was a very accomplished Cruiserweight and had multiple legit title defences coming into that fight, and it was a fantastic fight.
Holyfield was partially gone, but again, Toney really beat him up and basically ended his career right then and there. and this was his Heavyweight debut, wasnt it? so thats pretty impressive, especially for a guy who came up from Middleweight originally.
the only reason I didnt choose Johnson right off the bat is because Johnson arguably lost the 1st Tarver fight...pretty much the only time a close decision has gone his way, haha...
Vernon Forrest had pretty huge wins over Mosley, but I kind of have a problem with a fighter getting FOTY because of a win over just one guy, cause maybe that guys style is made for ya, you know? but hes a great candidate, wins over Mosley at that point and time were HUGE.
Trinidad is also a great option. Reid and undefeated Vargas are pretty big wins if you ask me...
You ought to actually cast a vote then. ;)
By the way, Toney started at middleweight. The IBF title that Jones and Hopkins fought for was vacated by Toney when he went north to kick Barkley's ass.
I thought I did vote...Yeah thanks for informing me on that!
I voted for James Toney... A supermiddle weight (at least that were he started his career) who beat Jirov ( highly ranked cruiserweight)
and then Holyfield. Thats a nice accomplishment IMO.

Exactly.
Also, Shane was P4P #1 when Forrest beat him.
Finally, Winky didn't get fighter of the year in 2004 when he beat Mosley twice. Trinidad was in 2005 by the way.
This just a poll of fighters who won The Ring's Fighter of the Year away since the year 2000.
oh ok didnt catch that
I really don't think Shane had taken over Roy as p4p1 with that win over Oscar, to be honest. I can't remember if he took over the prime spot in Ring's ratings? but either way he was riding pretty high in all knowledgable pundits lists.

He was at the end of 2000 and 2001 it looks like.
I love having this site handy.

Johnson all the way. He was an underrated underdog in 3 175 lb title matches and won all 3. Fuck Tarver's lucky punch in the Jones rematch. Glen beat Roy down thoroughly and knocked his ass out. Sucked to watch Roy get taken out again but Glen gets more credit for his win over RJ than Tarver imo. Then of course he beat Tarver which put a smile on my face and put the icing on the cake for a big '04 from the Road Warrior.
Not really a consideration in the thread, but at least an interesting side topic... did you think Johnson should have gotten the nod against Tarver in their first fight? I thought Tarver actually won that fight pretty handily.
why did you vote forrest for beatin shane twice when winky did the same in addition to demolishing tito
Mosley was undefeated when Forrest beat him the first time.
Mosley had no business fighting at 154.
Exactly.
