BERNARD HOPKINS has earned a multi-million dollar fortune from boxing — but he still watches the pennies when out shopping.
Hopkins, who faces undefeated Welshman Joe Calzaghe on Saturday, said: "At the age of 43, I've done well with my money because I made great investments.
"I have property but I'm still a coupon clipping guy. I've still got a Costco discount card in my wallet."
Hopkins insists he will be flying the flag for all 40-somethings when he takes on Calzaghe, nine years his junior, at the Thomas and Mack Centre in Las Vegas.
He added: "This fight ain't about buying another car or another house.
"This ain't about a payday. I'm in it to inspire others by showing that being your 40s is not a death sentence."
He's just wants to prove everyone wrong who have written him off in this fight at the outset for being 43. Despite this claim I can't help but thinking he's too old to do this. Has anyone seen the countdown on HBO? All the specialists and gadgets they had him hooked up to, you'd think he was being nursed back from hypothermia or something.
I half expected to see a Russian doctor appearing from behind a curtain carrying a syringe marked "Ivan Drago".
George foreman has already proved being in your 40's isnt a death sentence. Bernhard has also proved it already as well because he is a top 10 p4p fighter in his 40's.
"This isn't about the money" translates to "This is about the money".
I respected Hopkins's honesty though leading up to the Trinidad fight.
He says "this means belts, this means legacy, this means mlllions".
The interviewer asks, "what means more, the titles, or the millions?"
Without hesitation, Hopkins looks right in the interviewer's eye and says "the millions".
There are some fighters out there that can say its not about the money and I could probably believe them...Bernard is not one of them. Also-he has not made the money that his two biz partners have made and if he is a penny pincher like he claims then that burns at him a bit...
Note-I think an interesting thing that has not been broughten up a lot is the original June date that this fight was supposed to take place on. Calzaghe scrapped that date and insisted April...I think Joe is ready to go and Bernard would have probably enjoyed another month of preparation for that 40something body.
thats probly y he's trains like he's still hungry
why is being in your 40's a death sentence.
Do people who are 40 walk around thinking about their impending death?
What about goths?
Everything Hopkins says confuses me. He's either a secret genius. Or a muppet.
When you talk as much as he does, something is bound to sound smart sooner or later...
As I understand it, Planet Hollywood put up a GUARANTEE of $16M for the fight, with each guy getting $8M a piece from that. There may be revenues from the European side of things as well, although I am not sure. What I am failry certain of is that any other revenues are spit 50/50, just like the Planet Hollywood guarantee.
That is why this fight is on free HBO, because those schmucks at Planet Hollywood stake horsed the fight. Better for us, but those guys should fire their CFO.

Boxing-wise smart guy.

Yeah, fair point, scap. I forgot about that.

I never let a white boy beat me?
If we said "I never let a black man beat me" it'd be shouted at and called racism.
Boy you're late on this subject.
