would he of beat Trinidad and De la Hoya? For some reason I think he would have but he couldnt take hits that well. I dont have any comments on mosley and mayorga.
hell no. Vargas wasnt even that good a fighter. He could just hit really really hard.
Couldnt agree more. He had some decent fights which puts a shine on his career but against Mayorga he didnt wanna know, he didnt look interested and he lost alot of respect from me because of it.
Yes he's been unlucky with injuries but he has never been in the class of De La Hoya or Trinidad, and never would have been.
Vargas had a chin. His struggles with weight, and tendency to take huge punches were his downfall.
I mean was he supposed to stay up right when Tito landed those left hooks? He took a lot of clean punches from Oscar before he went down too. I dont believe he had a bad chin at all, not until later in his career.
Sometimes he would be a little too methodical/slow with his punches, so his opponent could measure him with devastating punches.
i think Vargas was chinny personally ,but regardless wether he was chinny or not he could have been so much better if he was slightly more duarbale
that IMO says it all
i think being on steroids didnt help him much either
im not an expert on steroids but im pretty sure being on and off them as much as he seemed to be really messed with his "skills" atleast his reflexs and shit. I think him actually having defense would have been great, getting hit cleanly no matter who you are is going to rock your shit
Vargas had a good chin but not a great one. Remember it took a lot of accumulated punishment for Felix and Oscar to finish him, 12rds and 11 respectively. And he did enough to be in both of those fights on the cards til the end. He always had skills, but he had more physical strength than actual punching power. He's overrated as a puncher but was a good fighter. Had good wins in good fights against Ike and Winky. He could have beaten Tito and Oscar at 154/160, but he came up short.
He would have beat Trinidad regardless if it wasn't for Trinidad cheating.. I'm no fan of Vargas but he had Tito hurt and Tito knew he was done if he didn't do something.. A lot of people will say that's B.S. but only because they hate Vargas. I hate Vargas too but I try to look at things rationally and unbiased though I don't get too much credit for it.
I don't know......Tito didn't look that seriously hurt.
Maybe he was. He was apparently hurt enough to want to give Vargas a brutal cheap shot to the nuts to buy some time.
I thought that besides the Hopkins fight, the most hurt I've seen him was against Alberto Cortes, but luckily for Tito that KD came at the end of the round.

Vargas had a tough chin...matter of fact he was never knocked down until the Trinidad fight. Trinidad ruined Vargas. I think if Vargas would have lost in the very first round he would still be boxing today but the punishment over twelve long rounds just destroyed him physically.
The man got thrown in with the lions to fast in his career. I personally think he had a good chin and overall good skills but damn Tito just ruined him. After Tito he looked slower and his defense went to shits. Still one of my fav fighters has a heart like no other.

Vargas had some heavy hands, but he wasn't that powerful. He didn't have that earth-shattering power like a Julian Jackson, or a turn-the-momentum-of-the-fight kind of power like Tito. He just had some pretty good power.
His skills were pretty solid. He knew how to shorten up his punches well. He threw good straight shots, which partially made up for the fact that he wasn't the quickest of fighters. He had a nice jab which he used well against Quartey, even getting the better of the jabs with Ike. He just wasn't blessed with the most natural gifts. He tried to box and move in the mid rounds against Tito, but his feet weren't quick enough and he kept getting caught. Tito turned things around in round 6 with a right hand late in the round, and kept catching Vargas when Vargas tried to box on the backfoot. Eventually Vargas tried to stand toe-to-toe with Tito in round 9, and that beating took a lot of out Vargas.
Vargas had a chin, he was just hit pin point by one of the hardest hitting WW's of all time. I mean why does getting KO'd mean you have a bad chin? Duran got KO'd by Hearns another all time hard hitter at WW.
The problem was that they put a puppy against full sized dogs in Tito and DLH. It ruined him and he was never the same after the Tito fight and less so after DLH.
His chin was alright.
It doesn't mean he's chinny because he couldn't withstand all those left hooks and straight right hands from Felix Trinidad.
Later on he became more chinny, but I don't think it was that bad early on.
Yes.
Vargas could have been an all time great, if he didn't get so many injuries.

I thought his chin was OK and no he wouldn't have beaten them, he was overhyped IMO, he didn't have the skills to beat DLH or Trinidad. His injuries didn't help either.
