Popular vs.Notorious
Popular : regarded with favor, approval, or affection by people in general
Notorious: publicly or generally known, as for a particular trait
___________________________________________________________________________
THE TITLE was just to get you guys to c0me into the thread.... FLOYD will never be as popular as Ali....PERIOD!!!
People think you have to be popular in order to be a draw.....THAT is a MYTH..., and FACTS just dont support it...
The point of this Thread is Floyd doesnt need to be popular to be a draw....
His drawing power comes from being Notorious, and being a celebrated fighter
_________________________________________________________________________
ALI
The most popular fighter to ever live is Ali....
But for most of Ali career he was the Most "Notorious" fighter in the game....He wasnt loved, he was reguarded as a big mouth and cocky.....just as Floyd is today..
Ali didn’t become Popular until He "lost" not to Frazier but to the Government...
When People saw what the U.s Government was doing to Ali.. he became popular AND a fan favorite...
________________________________________________________________________
Floyd
Floyd Mayweather is adding to his popularity everyday and he added to his “popularity” even more in the Hatton fight. He had overwhelming support because of the British fans booed the National Anthem...
You can hear the fans Screaming "U.S.A" and "FLOYD" throughout the whole fight....But I think that was just for that fight you never know though
But Now...
"Floyd is more Notorious rather than popular."
Floyd Mayweather is the most "Notorious" fighter in the game... He is without a doubt the most “Famous”
His "Fame" is second to only Oscar among Active Fighters
He is the most "Revered" boxer in the game... Floyd will never be the most Popular (loved) fighter right now because he has chosen to take the bad guy road... it doesnt meaned he isnt popular but he is more Notorious right now rather than Popular
________________________________________________________________________
History
As of right now I don’t think WHAT Floyd is doing is a bad thing....
Some of the most "Famous and successful" people history has ever known
Have been more "Notorious" than Popular... or Have been "Notorious" before they became "Popular"
Al Capone
2pac
Biggie
Ali
Malcolm X
Kobe Bryant
Terrell Owens
Deion Sanders
Britney Spears
Charles Barkley
Scarface (Tony Montana)
The list goes on....

My Point
Floyd notoriety and fame is what sell's the fight's not his popularity ....
Floyd being "Notorious".... sells the fight
People just don’t come to see Floyd lose just like they just didn’t come to see Ali lose...
People come because they are interested in Floyd.
He is a "hot rod" for debate as we see in the millions of threads, articles, stories, and interviews we see made about him....
If you think Floyd wasn’t half the reason for the first de la hoya P.P.V numbers then your crazy...
If you think Floyd wasn’t Majority of the reason for the Hatton fight then you’re crazy...
Floyd's widespread reputation of being "Notoriously" a great fighter and an Arrogant Person is what makes Floyd the most famous fighter in the game...
HBO, WWE, Rock Star understands this that's why they give him so much money...
The whole Boxing world Understands this that's why he is the most "Famously Celebrated" fighter in the sport.....
Oscar is the most Popular Fighter in the Sport
Floyd is the most "Notorious".... and "Celebrated"
Floyd like it or not, Is the 2nd Biggest Draw in the sport not because he is popular.....It is because he is "Notorious"....
Let's The HATE CommEnsE...!!

WHat so crazy today is now it is accepted that Mayweather is without question the biggest draw in the sport of boxing!!!

Oops, sorry bout that Horus. I do remember reading the thread, but it was a while ago.
He'll never be as popular as Ali. He don't wanna be. he's built his fame by deliberately makin people loathe him. Ali's hate inspirin swag was genuine, not a made up persona, so over time cats warmed up to him and showed him love.
how about you guys read the thread instead of the title....
because if you guys did your responses wouldnt be what they are now...
havent you guys heard of dont judge a book by it's cover..
you guys need too try to read before you respond because i clearly state right here that floyd will never be as popular as ali...
But then in the title of the thread you state:
" FLOYd might one day BE MORE POPular than ALI.....!!!!
So were you just trying to start a debate with that title alone knowing the majority of the people would disagree heavily?

Muhammad Ali is a household name and has been for close to 40 years. I don't see anything Floyd will do or has done that would put him over Ali in any way. Just because he contributes to charity doesn't make him some type of Mother Teresa that everyone will look up to. He doesn't stand for anything but what's best for Floyd.
Ali stood up for his religious beliefs and his human rights with the whole situation with him choosing not to be drafted to the war thus being stripped of his titles that he was never beaten for. He's had way more memorable fights and defied the odds when he beat George Foreman (who was a killer in that era). Plus, his lighting of the torch in the Olympics is one of the most emotional & inspiring moments in not only sports history but this country's history as well.
I can see you being a very avid fan of Floyd, but dude...Ali is a staple in this country's history. Floyd will just be remembered for being a great fighter.
Not sure if I said it in this thread before, but Ali's big mouth was more controversial than Floyd's. He was remembered for the things he had done outside the ring as well, like situations in Civil rights and standing up for his religion, etc.
Floyd will never be more popular than Ali, I guarantee that.
Yeah, the sad fact is that most fighters just don't have the education to be able to trash talk like Ali. They are a little on the dumb side to be horribly blunt. Ali was articulate, witty and and made most of it into a big game. Floyd, Judah etc are just bad at it. They sound like wanky little wannabe gangsters from the corner and it just doesn't wash. It's also really damn boring.
Ali was not really the educated type either (he could barely read and write, at least in his younger days, so it is said), he just had natural oratory skills and magnetism.
Mayweather doesn't have the same level of charisma, nor is his antagonistic persona (which is an act) very genuine or particularly well-played in my opinion. He'd be better served trying to be the respectful type, more like a Leonard (although Leonard put on airs as well). The Mayweather leading up to the Gatti fight is the only time I recall him using some good, genuine trash-talk (he actually appeared to be serious).

Are you one of those guys that writes up those dodgy scam internet ads? You know, "You can have a bigger dick in just five days! Here's the proof!.......Just give us your credit card details and you'll be a rollicking, whale-willied, white boy in only five days!"?
It seems like it.
Oh, and the last sentence should read 'Let the hate commence', not 'Let's.....' and it's also a 'C' in commence, not an 'S'.

I hate this ****ing thread.
Ali was hated because of his mouth but was a huge draw because no one had ever seen a heavyweight as flash as him. He then went up against Liston, and against all odds stopped him.
Thats why Ali was so popular/notorious/loved/hated.
He fought everyone, unlike Floyd.
Times have changed. Now no one knows who the **** Floyd is. Or Pac. Or whoever is p4p no.1.
Well, tonight I watched a replay of a Floyd fight on ESPNC from 1996, I believe, his 13th pro bout which he won by a very good KO. He was booed. Loudly.
Flash forward to 2009 and he still is hated by quite a few people on this very forum and across the internet.
It's highly doubtful Mayweather Jr. will ever be more popular than Ali unless he discovers the cure for AIDS and/or cancer and adopts a country full of orphans. Marrying a very popular lady like Oprah Winfrey and treating her right might help too. And he should probably donate all his money to charity to be on the safe side. Fighting Pac, Cotto and Mosley would be icing on the cake.
Hm..
I'd hit that.
