This is considering that the heavyweight division would have a 235 or 240 pound limit.
Personally, I'm torn both ways for this question. Cuz although its unfair to watch a 280 lbs guy against a 220 pound guy, cuz either the big guy is too big for the small guy, or the small guy is too fast for the big guy and its almost always a weird fight. But at the same time, its interesting to see how a smaller guy would do against a bigger guy. Like Valuev against almost every one of his oponents. So I don't know. What do you think?
There should be a super heavyweight division when there is a super heavyweight to rule it. In the past 10 or 20 years there hasn't been a champion so dominant that it makes the disparity in weight so great that another division is needed. 215 lb Holyfield took on guys who outweighed him by 30+ and the fights were competitive, Tyson before him took on very heavy guys and usually dominated them. No real need for a super heavy division in my estimation.
I think this thread is needed today. this fight is the reason I think a super heavyweight division is needed. I wouldn't even say that klitch is the better boxer than sultan but he dominated him as if it were just a sparring session for wlad.. this fight is the equivalent of a pavlik vs hatton. it wouldn't be fair to have that fight and it wouldn't be allowed so why is this fight allowed? I say heavyweight limit of 235 with a super heavyweight division.
MW 160
SMW 168 = +8
LHW 175 = +7 ?? huh? should be more!
CW 190 = +15
Hw is 190+
so a 190 lb guy can be forced to fight a 325lb guy! (Valuev!)
I think LHW should be higher and then reasonably the CW div should be higher also
say to 100 KG (220.5 lbs)
BUT! untill the BIG HWs at say 250+ DOMINATE the division there is no REASON to create a SHW div!
as long as the smaller guys can compete there is no NEED for a SHW div
but I do think that the CW div limit should be moved up.
(Oh ya and i would rename them reversing the CW and LHW names)
SAY
MW 160 (72.5 kg)
SMW 176.5 (80.0 kg) +16.5
CW 198.5 (90.0 kg) +22.0
LHW 220.5 (100 kg) +22.0
HW 100 kg+
This make sense to me!
Well though out, and I agree with most of this -
ie. weights should be changed, widening LHW & Cruiser, but think that the names should stay the same, as it will create too much confusion.
The Cruiserweights are really starting to mature as a division, & have a fair bit of depth these days.
An extra 10 pounds or so gives them even more depth.
As for a Super-Heavyweight division, there just isn't the talent to make a division, or the need that I can see.
Chagaev beat Valuev in an entertaining fight, & Valuev's the best of the really big guys.
He follows a long tradition
- Dempsey hammering the likes of Willard, Firpo & Fulton;
- Louis hammenng Buddy Baer
- Max Baer hammering Prime Canera,
etc. etc. etc.
I get what your saying and you're right, I just don't think you can change it that easily, you can't have two heavyweight divisions, the heavyweight champion of the world is like the top thing in boxing and then placing another division above it would wwater down the mystique associated with it, its definitely something that deserves to be looked into though.
1k posts does my e-dick get any bigger now?
thats true. this is the best point I've seen going against making of another division. so far I was leaning towards the creation of this division but now I'm back in between, with the argument of 'mystique'. I guess the super heavyweights would get that mystique which doesn't seem right. but as far as entertainment goes, I still think creating this division would improve the entertainment value.
why revise all the divisions? all the divisions are good the way they are. its just the heavyweight divison thats kinda screwed up to me.

Still seems pretty pointless, you're still pretty much adding a division because 1 or 2 fighters are heavier than the rest. It would completely ruin the HW division.
Heavyweight division is NOT screwed up. Sultan Ibragimov is 220 and he beat the 280 pound Briggs. There comes a point when all that extra-weight will work against you.
If your going to start adding or taking away divisions then surely the best thing to do would make a complete revision of every weight division, but its not going to happen I don't think.

I don't really see how it would improve the HW division. It's not like the SHWs are completely dominating, Valuev lost to a much smaller fighter, as do most SHWs. Honestly the last thing we need is another division.
its not about winning or losing. its about crappy matches. chagev beat valuev, but it was an ugly fight to watch. cuz no matter what, physically lop sided matches are boring to watch no matter which way they go.

235 should be the cut off in my opinion. I think it would improve the heavyweight division and would even make for better super heavyweight fights. like tye fields vs valuev. that would happen if there were a super heavyweight division.I don't really see how it would improve the HW division. How many guys in the HW are really over 250lb? Only a small handful. No way it would work.

I think the vastness of that weight in that divison is the reason for its down fall.
why isn't this thread catching on? I really want to know what ppl think. I though more would be interested. I want hear your 2 cents plz. Cuz I think this is an interesting subject. this is one thread that I believe in and will keep pushing until I am satisfied. I'm not doing this for points, I don't care about points.
Ibragimov is 220 and he is a world champion. No need for any new divisions,
the smaller guys can compete against the heavier guys with their speed.
Briggs vs Ibragimov = a perfect example of this.
Chagaev is under 230 and he whooped Valuev.
yeah but, it was a boring fight to watch. as I said, either the big guy takes advantage with his size, or the smaller guy takes advantage with his speed and elusivness. But either way, its a very boring fight. I mean, how many pay-per-view buys were there for the chagaev-valuev fight? How many valuev fights have entertained you? Now imagine a guy closer in height to valuev fighting him, that would be entertaining. And don't tell me that Lewis-Klitchsko wasn't more entertaining than lewis-tyson. Its the way it is, I think the heavyweight division will benefit from this. Its just to weed out the big slow bums, and give them their own super heavyweight division which will have its own attraction cuz of the name of the division.
