I was reviewing the top contenders and champions in the division and I don't see any stand-out stars that could revive the popularity of the division. I mean think about it...who in the divsion could sell-out a major venue or bring high PPV numbers similar to what Tyson did in the late eighties and early nineties?
Thanks for bringing it up again.
Yes, I think the HW division is still semi-dead. The main problem is, that boxing is not the mainstream sport anymore. For a multitude of reasons:
- big athletes go to football or basketball in the US instead of the gym,
- the champion fights appear boring
- PPV has discouraged off many poorer watchers
- other martial sports (like K1 or wrestling) take some share off the viewers
- there are many people who believe a martial carreer is against their faith
Here in Germany, most fighters come from poorer families - few "German" boxers have German names. Arthur Abraham and Felix Sturm were not born under these names.
Boxing is less and less a sport for the masses. The Klitschkos may be big stars, but even Floyd, Pacquino, or DeLaHoya are almost unknown here. Even the "neighbor superstars" Hatton and Kessler are unknown.
Boxing is on a decline. It might come back if there are more poor people who consider a martial carreer a viable choice to get off the street or to get rich.
I had to take this thread out and o brush off the dust to see if anything has changed. With the recent fight with Vitali and Arreola, do you think the HW division now has a chance or is it still dead?

worst...
HW...
era...
ever...
Sorry... This Bloody place is sooooooo Frustrating sometimes..
You are taking it too seriously. You just said I have a sad little life a minute ago cause I posted my opinion about Tyson being the benchmark for heavies.
Chill out man, have some fun and don't let shit get under your skin so easily.

Since posting this thread last year, has the HW division redeemed it's self or are we still looking at a pathetic division? Is the revival of the HW division on the backs of the "up and coming " stars such Haye and Arreola?
So what's the top 10 (more or less) most talented fighters in the New Heavyweight Guard?
And put a * next to any name that is exciting/skilled to watch.
The division still needs to get rid of guys like Rahman, Maskaev and Vitali. Golota is looking for a title shot too.
I think Holyfield, Toney and Byrd are done but there are still some old guys in the top 10.
I have no problem with old boxers but when they are at the top of the division it doesn't speak well for that particular era.
.......In the next year or two this may turn out to be the deepest and most talented heavyweight division in history. Tons of skilled guys that are just bursting on the scene and the old guard is going away. No more Tyson, Toney, Byrd, Goofy Whitaker, old Holy, Mercer, etc. etc.
to be honest im british and its not hard to see most of the heavywieght contenders and champs are all blown up even wlad but it seems wlad is the only guy that actually trys to use some skills instead of sluggin and hoping to hit.
This is the worse heavywieght era in my opinion and alot of people feel that way not because of fat calvin brock or bruster losing but because of lack of talent.
The guys he mentioned were all world title holders fairly recently. That's his point, I believe.
yes,,they were but not anymore besides maskeav who got lucky enough to face rahman who didnt even win the title
I used to live just outside of Hartford CT. and before I left town, I saw this guy named Kevin Johnson (aka Kingpin) fight on the undercard for the Elvir Muriqi (spelling?) vs. Tarver fight. He seemed to have all the tools to be the next great american heavyweight. He had no real power, but excellent defense and an outstanding jab. I really think he would destroy Calvin Brock. Anyone seen him fight since then? maybe it was just me, but I thought he looked legit at the time.
eh,,,johnson drew with timur ibragimov who was beaten easily by brock in a one sided fight
why are you mentioning the worst of the bunch? wlad,,chageav,,,povetkin,,peter,,virchis,,jcg,,,sultan and even tony thompson are worlds above them

Briggs
Valuev
Maskaev
Rahman
...
What else can I say?

There is not a heavyweight fight I would pay to see...
The only decent heavy is the big Klitoris...the rest are all either fat, never was or never will be's, frauds and guys who don't know when to quit.
How else do you explain Evander fighting for a championship last year?
Or that seven foot goon who had the nerve to call himself a 'champion'.
As for the fact that there are no American blacks....only an ignorant fool would quickly suggest that race is why Americans complain about the state of boxing.
I,for one would welcome quality...no matter where it's from. And we certainly don't have it nowadays...
So yes, right now,the heavyweight division may as well be dead.
youre clearly either ignorant or biased. the top european heavies which are dominating the divison are absolutely not fat and out of shape. its the american fighters that are fat,,lazy and out of shape. chageav,,,wlad,,,sultan,,,virchis,,povetkin and a few others are all solid well rounded fighters . the biggest problem besides ignorance or biasness is that a lot of fans or so called fans havent seen these guys fight enough
he is one of the best combination punchers to ever fight at heavyweight and probably had the fastest hands. watch the following fights all available from torrent sites.
Patterson vs
Willie Troy
Archie Moore
Roy Harris
Brian London
Ingemar Johansson II 1960 FOTY
Tom McNeeley
George Chuvalo 1965 FOTY
Just messing with you. Yeah, Floyd was pretty much the only other Heavyweight besides Tyson to perfect the peakaboo style. It's too bad he didn't make the trip up to heavy a bit earlier and we missed out on a Marciano matchup.
chad probably has the body to go up to heavyweight at some point but i think his chin would let him down.
Chad I think, will be a star in the LHW division for a long time to come. It would be a shame for him to move up to Heavy, where his power wouldn't carry and his chin would become much more suspect.
