before I make the argument, I would just like to say that I am a mayweather hater turned fan.
Mayweather is the complete package. He has speed, head movement, glove defense, foot work, intelligence, ring generalship and you can't really say he is a power fighter but, you can say he has a deadly piston of a punch as proven against hatton.
Mayweather has beaten De La Hoya and Hatton with relative ease. These are guys who were at the top of alot of p4p lists for the past couple of years and they got dominated by mayweather. Here is a list of the top fighters in no particular order that are in a fightable weight class for mayweather: Junior Witter, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, Paul Williams, Antonio Margarito, Vernon Forrest, Andre Berto. I think most would agree that mayweather could cream all of these fighters easily. Couldn't definitly say that about any fighter in any era. Doesn't that make him the greatest of all-time?
You thinking Floyd thinking that he can beat anyone doesnt make him ATG because its just based on personal opinion and bias. This is why sane ppl rate ATG status by record and accomplishment. Floyd's record is laughable compared to top 10 ATG's.
how could you say that I'm rating him greatest of all-time cuz he says he is. I was a former mayweather hater as I stated. as in, I hated his unclassy attitude which I still do. I just think he is the greatest from observation. If I had to pick 2 fighters to put in the ring in order to display most possible skill in one fight, mayweather would definitly be one of those fighters.

Robinson fought 200 fights over 25 years from lightweight to middleweight (even though at times he weighed in at today's supermiddleweight limit). He fought and defeated a who's who over that time. He fought the greatest of his era and Hall of Famers multiple times. There was no question as to his heart and desire to be the best, not the wealthiest, but the best. (given though that Robinson was a shrewd negotiator, and I do feel that Mayweather deserves the money he gets). Mayweather has beaten future HOF'er Oscar De La Hoya (past his prime if we must be picky). Possible future HOF'er in Diego Corrales (I wouldn't vote Corrales, but he will probably get in because of his heart). And possible future of HOF'er Ricky Hatton (If Hatton sports some more quality wins thatn just Kostya Tsyzu). Meanwhile, Robinson beat Fritzie Zivic, Carl Olson, randy Turpin, Kid Gavilan, Jake LaMotta, Tommy Bell, Gene Fullmer, Rocky Graziano, and several others I can't name off the top of my head. I don't think he beat Maxim, in fact I;m going to say he never avenged that loss. Granted he succumb to the heat, but Maxim didn't so that shouldn't matter. Robinson beat some of the greatest that ever were, and fought them several times. I would like to see a Robinson/Mayweather match. Hell, I would like to see Mayweather in a lot of fights with the past greats, but that won't happen. I do want to see Mayweather fight ALL the best fighters near his weight before he retires, because thats exactly what the old timers did.
he lost to turpin at 30 years old and maxim at 31.
In his 132nd professional fight, in which he had only one loss (the previously mentioned LaMotta, who he would beat the next 5 times they faced.)
You do realize 5 of those losses were after the age of 44, and 10 of them were after the age of 40, and that the man fought 198 fights?

Yeah he lost 19 fights out of 200 according to boxrec and most of them were well past his prime.
I don't think thats even relavant if I've heard of them or not. the point is, robinson is considered the greatest in most ppls all-time list, and even if turpin and maxim were great (which I don't believe maxim was at all) robinson shouldn't have lost to them if he is the greatest of all-time. mayweather hasn't lost to anyone of equal stature who is fight now. He has fought better fighters, relativily, and won.
Robinson was beating Maxim until he collapsed from sun stroke. He came back and knocked Turpin out in 10. You could argue that Mayweather lost his first fight with Jose Luis Castillo.
but isn't greatness dependant on point of view? I mean, when talking about skills and not who fought who, mayweather has skills like nobody else I've ever seen. And I've seen alot of the greats fight including Sugar Ray Robinson who I just saw yesterday. Ray Robinson was great, but he didn't have the total skill set that mayweather has. and to take into consideration, robinson lost 19 fights from the beginning of his career to the end to alot of nobodies. He lost to randy turpin in his 8th fight. than he lost to a guy named joey maxim 4 fights later. I mean, mayweather fought champions throughout his career and not lost yet. So according to that, I think mayweather is the greatest this sport has ever seen.
Hey boxrec pro, do you know that there are 3 pages to that list? You do realize 5 of those losses were after the age of 44, and 10 of them were after the age of 40, and that the man fought 198 fights?
Robinson didn't lose until his 41st professional fight, to Jake LaMotta (ever heard of him, hint: raging bull), when he was outweighed by 16 pounds.
Please try to get your facts straight.
Have you really never heard of Turpin and Maxim?

He has fought better fighters, relativily, and won.

No, because he hasn't fought them, and I really doubt he beats Williams, and Cotto is about 50/50. You have to beat guys to rank higher, not have fans think you could beat them. That isn't what greatness is.

Just as the same response to the Vitali Klitschko as one of the greatest heavyweights, NO!!!. Could Floyd give some of the greats a damn diffcult fight, yes, could he beat some of them, yes, could they turn around and beat him, yes. Thats the difference, the "greats" fought each other on a rgular basis. Floyd NEEDS the Shane Mosleys, Miguel Cotto's, Cory Spinks' (I said Spinks because of similar styles) Paul Willimas', Antonio Margarito's and others to cement himself as one of the best ever. Listen, he didn't beat De La Hoya with ease, it was close. Floyd has all the talent there is, but he hasn't proven against all the tops yet, let me emphasize yet. He has arrived to the lofty status of great, but has yet to prove how "great" he really is.
Is Mayweather the greatest of all time?
NO!
That said, he's probably the greatest of his time. He may also be perceived as the greatest of all time, simply because he's the best fighter on the scene today. If he retired now, he wouldn't crack the elite top 10 club, but if he continues to fight indefinately, he could join that aforementioned club eventually.
Would he ever be the greatest ever? There's only one Sugar Ray Robinson...
3 posts and already full of red k, welcome to the boards my friend.
what's red k? I don't know what that stuff is but I'm not here to collect points. I'm just here to voice my opinions not to see their worth.
