Sorry if someone else has already made this argument, but this should have sent a message to every network, promoter, and fighter.
When all the dough is on the line, and you're talking about taking home $750K Vs. leaving the show with empty pockets, damn right guys are gonna give the fight of their life...
All fights should be structured like this.... where the winner gets the purse, and the loser gets dinner at Denny's and an HBO t-shirt.
Then we'll see m'fuckers leaving it all in the ring.

Fight was off the hook! Those 2 mother fukers let it all out, but as far as skills, I say Vazquez-Marquez 1 and 2 were better. We still have two more big fights to watch with potential foty.
Personally I agree that this was a FOTY candidate, but I think the lack of skill will keep it from really winning the honor. This kind of "hyped," tv-based fight is JUST what the sport needed before some big fights come up at the end of the year. It was kind of a blue-collar finale with a lot of excitement. Lots of activity, lots of big punching, not a lot of boring ring-walking or one-sided dominance. I'm of the opinion that Codrington will never amount to much because he is too willing to let opponents walk forward and then rely on his power (Bika proved that he can be out-powered). Bika has a good chin but utterly terrible technical skills.
As a total aside - I thought the fight should have been over in the first round. Bika mugged Codrington when he was obviously down.
To tell the truth, I am talking out of my a$$ a bit because I missed the first 3 rounds. I'll watch the whole fight and get back to you.
Man I'm telling the 3 rounds you missed was full of fun and dramatic fighting. Hell the 1st round sets the tone because both fighters hit the canvas.
Can we all agree that these guys are C fighters???
I would say a B- on a good night.
Well I agree and I disagree
I will say in the heat of the moment he was VERY sloppy and there were some rounds were he just abandon his jab but there were rounds he was boxing from the outside. For the most part of the fight he was coming straight in and swinging hooks and uppercuts. I picked Bika to win since the the premiere of the show. I know Bika is very unothordox and you've just have to expect that from a guy like Bika.
I know we can agree on this. THIS WAS ONE HELL OF FIGHT AND SHOULD BE MENTIONED AS FOTY IMO.

C'mon, did he throw any jabs? Straight lefts or rights? All he through were left and right hooks with no accuracy, might as well have had his eyes closed. It was entertaining, otherwise I wouldn't have watched it all, and I was rooting for Bika, since he's from Africa (I spent 12 years in Zimbabwe) but damn for a PRO with over 20 fights, if he didn't have a decent chin and power, he'd be a joke.

:wtf: How can you say that? He is very unorthodox, but he does look like a fighter. Damn man you are to harsh. Just give the man some credit for giving us fans one hell of a fight. If you wasnt pleased with the performance last night, find you a new sport because it fans like you that put too much on a fighter and expect to much from a fighter.

70/30 split for the winner that's it.
if a champ is involved and is going to be defending his title he could get 2-3 mil. as a signing bonus for taking the fight butthe rest goes into the pot.
it shouldn't matter who the main draw is, if he's the best fighter the he will get the big money......it's simple, but as already pointed out the sport is far to corrupt for this to happen.
Exactly, I've always thought it should be a "winner gets the majority of the split" approach. Kind of like Tennis and Golf. The purse is set with the winner getting the big cut and the runner ups splitting the rest.
So if we're talking 3mil vs 700k...fighters will fight to earn that 3mil
C'mon, Bika looked like he'd never had a minute of boxing training in his life. Calzaghe doesn't get any credit for beating the crap out of Bika, so why is this Bika getting ANY credit for being a "fighter" now?

The problem with this pay structure is that fighters want to a) ensure they can pay for their training camp and crew expenses, b) ensure they can make enough money to live on until their next fight, and c) once they attain a certain status, they have the fan base to demand a guaranteed minimum purse.
It's a pipe dream to think that this structure would be implemented in the pros.
Thats right. That would kill the sport. Nobody is going to fight for free and they shouldn't.

Don' t talk such crap. Ok some fighters are getting paid much more then the other. But that's not a reason why only the winner should get payed. Fighters get payed for the 6 weeks or more that they are training before an important fight, because getting in the ring is hard, because it's a sport in which you get knocked the shit out of you...

guys we all know that boxers should be paid mainly on the result of the fight.........hell that is why it used to be called prizefighting....
the reality though is that it will never happen. the sport is too corrupt to ever allow that..

I thought the runner up still got some decent money out of it?
I'm a big fan of purses being dependent on who wins the bout. It'll never happen (and in some cases shouldn't where one fighter is clearly the draw) but everything else being equal I'd like to see it happen. Would certainly guarantee that some fighters will give a damn where they haven't always done so.
