I'm sure you've heard someone say Margarito didn't deserve a fight with Mayweather. Those who thought he didn't deserve the fight pointed to his resume, which lacks any great names, along with his slow, plodding style that many felt Mayweather would pick apart.
Margarito's fans felt bringing $8 million to the table was more than enough for him to get the fight. His resume also has some solid wins against fighters like Cintron, Clottey, and Lewis.
Looking back, did Margarito "deserve" a fight with Mayweather?
i dont know ....
about the emotional links part he said it himself in the bad when he fought willaims merchant or some other guy interviewed both before the fight
Hmm, that's kind of strange... I don't know many that rank the WBO as highly as the "Big Three".
It's kind of in limbo between the real belts and the fringe belts.
Margarito is kind of a weird dude though it seems like.
yeah after having hold it for so long marg had emotional links with the wbo belt but marg said it himself that williams was a very akward fighter and that cotto was perfect for him still he picked williams and lost but at least he was confident enough to go for the bigger challenge
I don't know about the emotional links part... but I agree that it was brave to fight Williams.
My question though, is if he was so confident that he would beat Cotto, why didn't he just upgrade from the WBO to the WBA?
still at that point margarito was very hyped he pretty much made the wbo belt what it was he really didnt need it
So you really think that a fight with the less-accomplished Williams proved who was the best moreso than a fight with Cotto? The WBO belt didn't have anything to do with it?
he had the chance to fight cotto but he fought williams to prove he was the best unluckily he was 2 rounds short of beating him but he proved a lot by fighting a guy mayweather will duck his entire career
He fought him to make sure he didn't get stripped by the WBO. Notice he waited until the last minute to fight him? Wonder why?
there is no doubt in the world that margarito is braver than mayweather he settled to fight the very limited baldomir while margarito picked the most akward opponent out there in paul williams
Margarito PICKED the most awkward fighter? Margarito did all he could to avoid Williams who was his MANDATORY.
Yes, he did. Mayweather picks his fights we all know that. His objective is not to fight the best and prove to the fans who the best is. But i give him credit for the Delahoya fight, still Margarito would have given him hell no matter how you put it.
I don't know how that means ducking. I think ducking is way too harsh of a term to use on a guy who has like 5 multi-million dollar fights on the table, and he just picks one of them. Would he have ducked Baldomir had he fought Margarito? If you use the criteria you are using, then the answer would be yes, meaning Mayweather would have had to duck someone somewhere... and that's not fair to make a fighter be labeled a ducker.

when you come with the biggest payday of mayweathers life of course you deserve it. only a coward would turn that money down.
Now I see why you made a new name your old one got banned, ha!
Baldomir - $8 million.
Thank you.
:fuckyou: :fuckyou: :fuckyou: :fuckyou:
without the PPV too.
The problem with Margarito is he is hyped by Bob Arum made him look bigger than he really is with the $8 million offering of Floyd

this is what im saying after judah ppl jumped on the baldi wagon.......he just beat a guy who already lost from the beggening of the fight judah is never 100 percent mentally
You mean the way margarito fans jumped on williams bandwagon since he beat margarito.
Before that fight the maragrito fans were talking shit about williams, immediately after the fight williams punches wre reffered to as tip tap shit hitting margarito on the arms and he never won the fight, then he was a pussy who was too scared to offer marg a rematch.
Now he swallows mayweather.
You and viva mexico should show more respect to the boxers you so easily refer to as bums and realise the world doesn't revolve around your favourite fighters.
Marg didn't deserve a bout with Floyd then, most likely still doesn't since he lost his last fight. You have to look at this from a pro/con standpoint. Antonio had no big names on his record or any notable fight at the time so was a virtual unknown despite his contender position. If Mayweather loses a fight to a legit tough fighter with no name recognition - he catches hell for losing and the overrated claims pour in given his p4p status. If Floyd wins the tough guy bout, he gets 'boxing purist cred', but no notch in his belt on a name win and no real increase in status to get on the radar of pop culture or the future big money fights that he salivated over. It's either a tough fight win (that he should've won anyway), or he lost to an unknown - which is the equivalent to a bum in some minds.
Your typical high risk low reward fight. If you call out the guy with so much to lose fresh at the top of the food chain, you better give him some incentive to fight you, a name win you can hang over his head or something.
I think this is a great post.
Maybe it doesn't strictly answer if margarito deserved a shot but i think it offers a much better insight in how boxers consider who their next opponent should be rather than the playground bullshit of a fighter being scared and ducking an opponent.
I think Margarito was on the final short list of candidates that possibly deserved a fight with Floyd. There is nothing you can say that makes him stand apart from all the other big names that also deserved a fight with him, is there?
I think Margarito would beat Baldomir, but I doubt by KO unless via cut. Never know, look what happened to Lujans ear. yuck...
I also think Floyd would beat Margarito by a wide margin, although it would be a semi-exhausting fight, you dont get out of a fight with Margarito without at least a few small bumps and bruises, its just his work rate, physicallity and will makes things difficult.
Even though I think Floyd would handily beat Margarito, I think Margarito did "deserve" a fight with him. He was rated #1 in the Welterweight division, and is a pretty damn decent fighter. there was no Mosley there at the time, Cotto wasnt where he is now, and Hatton wasnt exactly around for whatever reason...
BUT...there were better fights to be made. simple as that. so it doesnt matter that the fight didnt happen. but Margarito definately "deserved" a fight with Floyd...

. margarito would knock his ass out. baldomir is no one where near margaritos league!!
I think Tony would beat Baldomir, but not knock him out.
If the punches Forrest hit Baldomir with didn't knock him out Tony isn't going to. Because I think with 1 punch Forrest hits harder than Margarito.
And those bombs were crazy he was throwing.
