I agree it's been a great year for boxing. the WW division is better than it's been for years, and Vlad keeps things in the HW division at least mildy entertaining. Looking forward to some more good fights:boxing:
Listen, I'm a boxing fan through and through but I will say MMA is here to stay. The reason I say that is because they finally found out a way to market it and make it mainstream.
The argument that boxing has been "dead" has been going on for over 100 years. People have been wanting to abolish the sport because of it's brutality and when there's a lack of a "super star" they say it's dead.
Boxing will always be here, no matter what. Unless we as a human species, manage to suppress our basic and fundamental instincts, boxing will live on forever.
Hey man I don't hate on anything, but I know what I like and I know what sport brings in the money and has the bigger fanbase. There's a reason MMA guys are making only six figure salories and top boxers make millions.
It's a FACT that boxing is bigger than MMA currently.
It's my OPINION that this will always be so.
See, I'm rather good at this seperating fact from opinion thing. Thanks for your concern, but I know what I prefer and why, and I know how to count.
Boxing will always trump MMA. MMA is really nothing new, it's been going on since ancient history. Boxing will always resonate more strongly with the wider audience because a good boxing match sells itself. The energy is there for all to see, and you don't need to be an expert in technique to understand the drama and excitement of what is going on. It's layered entertainment. Yeah there is a lot of technique and strategy being employed at all times for pure fans but the drama is so simple (two guys trying to impose their will on one another) that anyone can appreciate a fight like Bowe-Holyfield or Ali-Frazier.
Boxing, more often than in MMA, provides competitive closely contested fights with a thrilling conclusion. In MMA it's usually an early stoppage or a long, drawn out, technical fight that ends in a submission (less exciting to the casual observer than a knockout).
Boxing is more often the dynamic sport that delivers the pain, struggle, and triumph of the human spirit that attracts people who want to experience these things vicariously.
So here's the thing that most people don't get: boxing is a very spiritual thing for me. That is the huge point that many less philosophical and spiritually inclined minds miss. It's the reason I am not as impressed with the technical minded cautious fighters who clearly do it for the money and fame but can't stand getting hit. There is something missing in the minds and hearts of guys like that. There are NOT the complete package they are built up to be. There are weaknesses, *****s in the armor, that can be exposed by a balls to the walls Bassilio type.
I respect Mayweather and guys like that but I just love the Marciano's, Frazier's, Dempsey's, LaMotta's and Holyfields of the world. Those guys had and have phenomenal spirit and their fights provide me with such a rush of energy and inspiration that I don't receive from watching Mayweather safely outclass someone.
I think boxing needs more Gatti's if it wants to get back on top of the heap. I also really think it will happen. Hell, if Samuel Peter gets his shit together and really focuses, he can be one of the biggest things ever. The guy has the attributes to be a tremendously crowd pleasing heavyweight star.
I'm telling you, Sam Peter with his shit together would be a force for anyone to fight. With every fight, he's becoming more and more a student of boxing. Just wait, when his brain catches up with his body and he fulfills his natural potential, he will be big news everywhere.
Keep in mind how young and inexperienced he is, yet how quickly he is improving. That's your future star right there. When he beats Wladimir in a rematch, boxing will really start going places.
Boxing really did take it's head out of it's ass and now it's pumping out the hard hitting prospects and the wars that we like to see. Also look at the current top 10 p4p. There are so many guys in there that are warriors who will throw down in almost any fight.
boxing is a great sport and the internet has allowed many people view interviews and press coverage etc which we may not have seen on normal tv. great match ups but we also have to wait and see how much excitement there will be when the well known guys fight some young prospects.
I think that the Internet has definitely had an affect on boxing eg.The Rjj - Tito signing video on this site and in that video there was a reference to putting it on youtube. So maybe it's affecting decision making as far as matchups but it sure has on the maketing.
cheers Cleetus
Boxing was "dead" over 250 years ago during the corrupt days of Jack Slack, Bill Stevens, George Meggs, etc., and the proclaimations of it being "dead" have been made in just about every generation since then, so none of us boxing fans will ever have anything to worry about when it comes to getting our boxing fix, and neither will our children, grand children, great grand children, and right on down the line.
"They say that history is the greatest of all teachers and the tale of past deeds define who we are in the present, and what we shall be in the future." - Well, I can't remember who said that but it's fitting
Internet does help, however before internet I never really hated any boxers, now I hate many cause of their ball washing fans. :nonono:
I started watching boxing about 2 or 3 year ago it was from the internet as well as japanese manga call Hajime Ippo

All press is GOOD press though.. The arguments keep the passion flowing between fights..
When I was On ESB .. one of the writers there told me Don King Himself Trawled the internet for opinions.. and That it was one of the reasons That Briggs and Kiltschko almost happened..
ur absolutely right this is the reason why important fights are made believe or not....u think boxers don't get into the internet to view what people thinks of them...there has been many cases.
i beleive that too, at first i didn't cause it seems abit far fetched but yeah i can imagine it has a huge impact, lets keep moaning about big fights being made :lol1:
I think the Internet is single most important factor in keeping Boxing going..

Haven't heard MMA talk in a while, plus I see boxing being featured on Sportscenter and ESPNEWS more.
yeah i was thinking that, UFC fans sort of started to keep quiet when huge fights in boxing were made.
thats not a diss, but its true :D
it plays a huge part, as soon as the arguments on the internet brewed about UFC taking over boxing.
boxing goes insane and pumps out many many big fights!!!
