The proposed fight between light heavyweight titlist Chad Dawson and former champion Antonio Tarver, which was being negotiated for Sept. 29 as part of Showtime's free preview weekend, is dead, Dawson promoter Gary Shaw told ESPN.com. "We couldn't generate enough money out of a site to satisfy the Tarver side," Shaw said. Shaw said Dawson (24-0, 16 KOs) would still keep the Showtime date and probably make his second defense against Adrian Diaconu (24-0, 15 KOs), the Romanian-born, Montreal-based mandatory challenger. There is a purse bid scheduled for Aug. 10 in the event the sides don't make a deal. Diaconu became the mandatory challenger with an ESPN2-televised third-round knockout of Rico Hoye in a May eliminator.
I know this thread is a little old, but this link shows Tarver explaining his own relevance and reluctance to fight Chad Dawson at this point. What do you guys think?

why is tarver so scared???
Tarver knows he will get beat. thats why he called it off.
exactly... tarver need to take up acting and be successful or we will see him at crusier weight in about 7 years making a comback

Dawson vs Diaconu, to me is a better fight then Dawson vs Tarver. it wouldn't bother me at all never seeing tarver fight again, he was never really all that exciting, the most excitement other than his ko of jones was when he would run his mouth, other than that, nadda............
Totally agreen, styles make fight :)
Tarver is...and always will be over rated. The bout he had with with B-Hop only exposed his one dimensional style. This news with him pulling out of the fight with Dawson doesn't surprise me....I kinda expected it to happen. It's not about the money...it's about Tarver's lack of confidence to beat a complete fighter such as Dawson.

he called it off because the money offer was low.
This could be a legitimate reason. Tarver did file bankruptcy at one point. He may need the money? But something is always better than a blank. To turn the fight down cold gives the impression he thinks this may be one of his last fights; not exactly the caricature of guy overflowing with confidence. Also, Tarver is getting up there in age. Maybe he knows that he doesn't have too many fights left?
Tarver has looked disillulsioned since the Hopkins fight. It was a complete role-reversal from the way Roy Jones looked after he fought Tarver. IMO it takes more to regain confidence and swagger after a tough, unexpected lose than from an unexpected win.
If Tarver isn't confident or dedicated as before, he should stay away until he is mentally ready. Physically, he is usually in good shape, but his mind hasn't really been there since the lost.
Vernon Forrest went through simliar ups and downs after winning and losing to Mosley and Mayorga respectively.
Shane never got enough credit for having the guts to go at Forrest or Wright when no one else would and eventually fighting on to further his career.
I bet he's already contacted Glen Johnson. Hopkins, Wright, Tarver, Jones, Quartey, Trinidad - they've got this senior tour thing going on right now. None of them are going after guys in their mid-twenties...
yep. none of them want to fight the younger fighters because they know they will lose. Jones wants trinidad- hopkins wants calzaghe- tarver turned down Dawson. it all makes sense
yep. thats what i was thinking.

It's always funny to me when boxers turn down fights because of money. How much is Tarver going to make by not fighting Dawson? And it's not like there are a ton of marquee light heavyweight names to turn to now that Dawson is booked...
