They finally admitted it on HBO. Lampley said all of the experts he'd spoken to called it the greatest fight they ever saw. I remember saying the same immediately after the fight. That year, everybody was saying stuff like it was great but not even top 10. Give me a break. It was the best ever. Don't be mad just because you didn't see it live (although no night in boxing can ever top that one). Call it what it is.
Keep in mind, fights generally don't get the respect they deserve until years later, but if the experts already call it the best ever after 2 years, just think where it will be in 10 or 20. I don't think any fight will ever top this because there's nobody with more heart than Corrales and a better chin than Castillo. That's what made it so good.
I put the Thrilla In Manilla above Castillo-Corrales I. It was one of the best fights ever though. Everyone has a different one. I think it may be the best fight in my lifetime unless you think Gatti-Ward is above it.
Corrales-Castillo I > Robinson-Gatti I > Ward-Gatti I

it was one of the greatest fights of all time. but it was not THE greatest.
I have five favourite fights with almost nothing between them- Arguello-Pryor, Morales-Barrera, Gatti-Ward, Castillo-Corrales and Frazier-Ali. There's almost nothing between them, but I'd have to go with Gatti-Ward. As is mentioned, the mouthpiece incident with Corrales slightly taints the victory, but it's still damn awesome.

I would also rank Ali-Frazier 1, 2 and 3 better than DC - JLC, because of the level of athletes participating and again, no mouthpiece incident, fighting under the crazy heat in the Phillippines. Simply, awesome!!
I can see the arguments for the FOTC and Manila, but the 2nd fight?
Clinchfest with not enough punching.
Corrales-Castillo I was definitely one of the best fights I've seen. Up there with Manila, Edwards-Chacon 2, Carbajal-Gonzalez 1, Robinson-Gatti 1, etc..Corrales-Castillo I is my personal favorite.
I think Bobby Chacon & Bazooka Limons 1982 slugfest deserves mention in here too.
Castillo Corrales is easily one of the 5 best fights I have ever seen. Insane action from start to finish...a complete lesson in in-fighting and some incredible displays of heart.
ooooh benn vs mclellan forgot about that one that was a great great fight as well.
Yeah, both guys literally gave up everything they had in that fight.
The controversy will always keep it below fights like MAB v Morales, Bowe v Holyfield and Gatti v Ward for me. Benn v McLellan was much more dramatic from start to finish, too.
Action wise its one of the greatest fights of all time, but to me their is more to a fight than action: The aura around the fight means alot, ala Foreman- Ali
I also think that a couple fights are better action wise:
Chacon- Boza-Edwards ( what a dramatic comeback)
Pryor- Arguello
And a couple are as good:
Barrera-Morales
Gatti-Ward
Hagler Hearns
Mathew Saad Muhammad vs Yaqui Lopes
But it is one of the best fights of all time.
Of course HBO will say it is. The fight last night had one of the participants fighting last night.
Considering the fight was shown on their biggest competitor (Showtime), I doubt they would've said that unless they meant it.
I kinda felt the stoppage may have been a little premature.
Not too sure, but it was a great fight anyway.
That wasn't a premature stop. Costillo was getting rocked and couldn't get his hands up to stop the barrage of blows he was taking to the head. I call it a good stop and a great fight and is probably my all time fav.
You guys can say what you want about Gatti and Ward, but their first and second fights were a couple of the best I have seen.
i was there live and had a great seat over in a neutral corner, and it was by far the best fight i've ever seen or been to. the whole place was beyond electric during that fight, and afterwards forget about it, it was crazy! all night you couldn't stop thinking about what you just saw, the greatest fight with the greatest comeback.
i don't think another fight could be duplicated like that, taking it a level higher would result in someone dying in the ring or ending up crippled.
but by far the best fight i've ever seen and i feel like i was blessed being able to see it live.
a side note: that fight was the first professional fight my friend had ever been to, what a doozy of a first professional fight to see. sad thing is nothing will ever be like that again........... but what a memory of the first prize fight you ever went to, eh???
I dont think its the best ever. Personally I prefer Gatti/Ward I, Bowe/Holyfield I, and Pryor/Arguello I over it. Also people forget that fights like that used to happen all the time in the 40s and 50s. Thats why Im not suprised that the older boxing journalists dont regard the fight as high as others.
I didnt watch it live. That may have taken something away from it, but I didnt watch any of the other fights I mentioned live either.
** Ali can barely walk and talk or even dress himself, so clearly you never knew he felt close to death in this fight and others because of unholy amounts of punishment he took in his career. Your pink pompoms have obscured your vision.
Those problems are from fighting Trevor Berbick and Larry Holmes when he had no business being in the ring. He showed signs during the Spinks fights, but those last 2 are what did him in for good.
But, like most Ali fights, he was clearly winning it most of the way. To be the greatest ever, you would think the fight was dead even or close to it before the end.
