I was just wondering from you guys if you think certain Heavyweights are somewhat a "waste of space".
I don't mean that disrespectfully because these men are fighters who put their health on the line.
However I think there are some HWs who just should not be in the top picture.
Don't force 8 if you don't think 8 need to "go". Just as many as you can.
For me...
1. Shannon Briggs - brings nothing to the table but power, age, no stamina and inconsistency.
2. John Ruiz - actually a decent fighter. However brings hugging, complaining and bad fights.
3. Davaryll Williamson - Inconsistent, weak chin, just a right handed puncher (when he throws it right)
4. James Toney - old, blown up MW. Has an entertaining mouth, but can't seem to back it up lately. I give him benefit of the doubt being a former MW. Had the skill to unify two of the HW titles (vs Ruiz and Rahman). But was roided for Ruiz and in worse shape vs Rahman. I just think it's time to hang em up.
5. Oliver McCall - old name getting a free ride to the title by the WBC because of his Lennox Lewis history. Plus he's KOed Oleg in one round in the past. So WBC may be looking to set that fight up. He's just old and I don't see him making any noise for long term. Maybe a big right hand in a big fight, but don't see him going far. What we need in the division are fights and consistency. Young fighters.
6. Evander Holyfield - love him, but just a name with a lot of heart left. I feel would get destroyed vs a big HW at this stage of his career. Funny though, he has more heart, dedication and ethic to stay in shape than everyone on this list.
7. Ray Austin - please no more shots for this guy. All respect as a fighter. He's just not any good. Big man, out of shape, no punch, chinny void of great skills.
...................David Tua is on the fence...
Again, this isn't out of respect to these men as fighters. I just feel the division would be better without them. So that more meaningful fights can happen. These guys are old, end up as mandatories or tune ups some way or another.
I 100% agree with the post above. IMO they should let the younger guys fight the older guys and the winner moves on. Therfore if the older guys really want it they'll trian hard and fight hard for it. or else They disappear and we have some new more exciting guys to watch.
get ready to cover your eyes again the moment he gets in there against a guy with a pulse. its a tragedy waiting to happen. I still cringe when I think of the donald and toney fights
those were unadulterated beatings.
i'd hate to see holyfield even fight a small, skilled heavyweight like eddie chambers. it'd just be a one sided destruction.
Holyfield shouldnt leave i like him in the division.

Good thread, I've been thinking the same. Toney, Holyfield, McCall, and a couple of others should retire. The sanctioning organizations should start moving young fighters like Witherspoon, Scott, Chambers, Dimitrenko, Platov and Arreola higher in the rankings.
Canada c'mon, the rankings are based on merit not age or inexperience.
I would also add Hasim Rahman to that list. He looked like crap against Sykes thursday night and was totally out of shape. If he cared about boxing he would have at least come somewhat in shape. I think everybody is still riding that KO of Lennox Lewis. I mean his performance was dreadful and he looked gassed after round 1.

I think your correct in most cases but i'd also remove chris bryd as he's far to small and old to actually chalenge for any title.
