I was reading "Boxing's Greatest Fighters" by Bert Sugar and I got to Pernell Whitaker at #48, and Bert discussed Whitaker vs. Chavez. Bert made it sound like Whitaker won the fight pretty clearly and it was declared a draw wrongfulley. I never saw the fight but was curious on what happened that night, did Whitaker get robbed out of his best performance? Or did Chavez earn a draw?

Whitaker won 8 rounds, not question.
The fight wasnt even CLOSE.
Now correct me if I'm mistaken, but this makes no sense.
If both fighters throw roughly the same number of punches, and landed roughly the same number of equally effective punches. Then how the hell do you score the round based on defense?
If that was the scenario, then wouldn't there defense also be equal? Since both fighters threw the same number of punches, and both fighters landed the same number of effective punches.
:ugh:
If that was the case, I would score that round based on Ring Generalmanship, rather than defense.
the key word there was 'about.'
Bert Sugar told a story about how they ran into a blind man on the street and the man said that Whitaker won."Even a blind man can see the Pernell won" The story is obviously not true but it shows how overwhelmingly people thought Whitaker won. Or at least how strongly Bert did.
I never saw this fight but the media usually makes it sound like Whitaker was robbed by getting a draw. I bet that wasn't the case, for some reason certain fighters like Whitaker Mayweather have their own set of judging criteria and a different one for everybody else. They get points just through defense not by actually landing punches. Your really only supposed to score a round to a fighter on the basis of defense if both fighters have about an equal activity level and are landing a similar amount of punches of about equal effectiveness. In that scenario you might give the round to the fighter with the better defense because through that he's achieving the 3 more critical criteria, he's the more accurate and hence more effective agressor through being more accurate and missing less, landing slightly the cleaner effective punches by making his opponent miss some...et

I'm a proud Chicano and I love Chavez to death but he lost. I felt he lost at least 8 rounds in that fight but I will also say he was never hurt or stunned. He just couldn't find Whitaker all night long. I love a good boxing match but it's ok to like a guy who bangs. chavez was a surgeon but could also bang with the best of them.
Pernell style was just something that didn't fit Chavez's style and it made for a very difficult fight for him. Sweet Pea is one of the greatest of all time, no shame in being out pointed by him.
Its too bad really, it was actually an outstanding fight. Whitaker looked amazing in that fight, just unbelievable. It was actually a very rough fight too.
I remember Whitaker really pissed off the ref, Cortez, in that fight, hahaha. That might have turned the judges against him.
People somtimes take the robbery idea a bit too far though, Chavez DID win some rounds. by no means at all did he deserve any draw...Whitaker clearly took at least 8 rounds, and I mean clearly, there is no way in hell you could score them for Chavez...but Chavez did take some of them

Whitaker was far from a runner. I consider Sugar Ray Leonard to be more of the running type of fighter. Whitaker was the type of fighter that would stand right in front of you and make you miss. He was a master of using angles and had great defensive skills like no other boxer.

which proves how young most of our posters are. just little kids who want to see a bloody fist fight, not a boxing match. you can't appreciate Whitaker and bash Mayweather because they are the same fighter. except Mayweather is even better.
Man,im nearly 19,but i understand and love the art of boxing, guys like Sweet Pea and Floyd should be respected for spelling out the word BOXING in the ring, people just wanna see blood baths now

Yes Whitaker got robbed,he totaly made Chavez look ordinary, its hard watching that fight if your a Whitaker fan,he should of been given a clear decision,if i remember,he was crying after the bell because he knew he did it,and it was his time to shine, then they declare it a draw :nonono:
Judges werent impressed by Whitaker he kept running and threw1-2 punch all night. Also the showboarding didnt help. For some reason the boxing world didnt like Whitaker at the time. Now people regards him as a ALL TIME GREAT!!! I think about this time Chavez was going down hill after this fight he fought Randall which led him to his first lost
People say that, but whitaker and chavez werent too far apart in age, nor were they far apart in when they started their career, when chavez was killing cab drivers, whitaker was at the olympics basically. They were evenly matched, Chavez by all means still had alot of fight left in him, but so did whitaker.
Whitaker kept "running"? Right....
I have only seen the fight in qiestion once and that was roughly 4 or 5 years ago but it was pretty clear to me that Pernell won. He did not win by much in my book(although if I watch it now, my opinion may change) but he outscored JCC pretty clearly. I would not say that this was the worst decision I ever saw, but it was rather bad.
I meant to say BrownBomber.
He's a Chavez nuthugger.
i just watched that fight the other day, being a big jcc fan i'd have to say it was almost a draw, but sweetpea won it. i don't know where everyone is getting this ( sweetpea beat chavez hands down ) from, cause both fighters were hitting hard, but that's just my opinion.
Thats your Mexican pride kicking in to even think that fight was close.

i would'nt say they are the same at all. whitaker would stand toe to toe and war, he did for most of his fights( i would know cause i have his carreer boxing set on dvd ) but while standing toe to toe he would be ducking, dodging and dancing. mayweather half runs half dances. i liked that fight chavez vs whitaker. in the face of all us mexicans, he stood there proud as the american anthem played.:boxing:
