So yesterday I was at my girlfriend's house when the subject of Don King came up.(Ok, I'll admit it, we were watching Beauty Shop, and it was because I wanted to, not her.)
ANYWAYS, I said "Don King is awesome" or something to that effect. Of course, her sister's know-it-all boyfriend pipes in with "No, he's really not, he's ruined so many boxer's careers" but was unable to give me any names.
I don't really know too much about Don King, other than the basic stuff. So tell me, did he ruin any fighter's careers? Did he come anywhere close to ruining any careers? Or was this guy just talking out of his ass like he seems to do most of the time?
Edit-Ehhh fucked up the title. Oh well.
I dont know about career, but you can blame Don King for the current severity of Meldrick Taylors mental issues.
After the second fight with Chavez Taylor knew it was time to go and he wanted to leave, but there was old Don, telling taylor dont listen to these people, im a get u another big fight, ur gonna be champ again get to the top etc etc.....
WHAT ARE YOU GUYS TALKING ABOUT?!?!?!?!?!
As much as i hate the guy for bring corruption back into boxing, he practically made LARRY HOLMES and MIKE TYSON what they are today.
He didnt destroy any of his fighters careers. He embelished their records illegally, he got them into millions of dollars in debt, and he forced wrongful decisions, but he never ruined a guys career. EVER
I was reading a book call "Coming To America" in the library today and it was all about Don King. The last chapter on that book was devoted to how King ruined Tim Weatherspoon's career. I was so pissed off at Timmy.
The Barbershop franchise jumped the shark with that one. I bet Ice Cube wore dark glasses and a wig when he cashed that check. It did make the Kevin Bacon game a little more accessible for the hood genre film, though, and provide me with 1/4 of my sig...
Wow I had no idea that Beauty Shop was even part of the Barber Shop franchise.
That right there is why I have a hard time feeling bad for anyone who has "had their career ruined". They choose to work with King.
I do feel bad for some of the boxers that Don King has taken advantage of as they have obviously worked hard to get some form of recognition as a boxer, and of course many don't have a great knowledge regarding the financial aspects of the game. But like i've stated, Don King is very persuavive and is reknowned for taking advantage of easily lead, or ill advised fighters. Mike Tyson is a glaring example for those who have reservations about working with Don King, yet Mike Tyson has never stopped Don King's continued success, and Mike Tyson is as much to blame himself for how his relationship with Don King turned out.

Don King has taken, and still takes, advantage of fighters. Whether or not you can associate that with him ruining the careers of fighters i don't know, but surely fighters have to shoulder some of the blame. Don King is a very intimidating, and persuasive man, but fighters are well within their rights if they don't want to work with him, and there is no written rule that says fighters have to work with Don King, but at one time he was the best Promoter in the world (and he would claim to still being the best) and fighters wanted to work with him because they wanted more money, but the bottom line is that the only important person to Don King is Don King.

Theres rumors that say Chavez and I also think Mayorga but I believe that Chavez got robbed several times by more than just don king I belive it was that one airline that went broke Taesa Airlines or something like that. They say he's even sent to kill boxer's. But you never completely know.
I like how Ali shuts him the fuck up in the film lol.
But Don King is part wanker part genius.
I wonder how don king felt about the movie lol, I wonder if he even saw it.

At least 50% of the boxers that have signed with Don have ended up filing lawsuits against him. As to whether he has "ruined" anybody's career is a matter of definition.
Couldn't agree more!!! That is why that UFC shit thinks they are going to take off because people like him are holding down boxing.
UFC has one title to fight for and not many after a few year when the UFC has many thing with it it will become worst than boxing
anyway boxing alway had it loyal fans beside it
It goes WAY beyond a few careers ..The MAN IS DESTROYING BOXING...

but how many people's career who weren't under his control did he fuck with?
I guess i could argue Meldrick Taylor among them
as for those who he was tied with:
Tyson
he did nto ruin his career, but he did ruin his health:
Ali
don surrounded mike with yes men and gave him £5 million when he was 20.
any 20 year old would go on a massive bender with that much money.
no one was telling him to stop. at the top of the pile was don, counting his pennies.
now when people call frank warren a wanker just remember how bad it is over the other side...
only in america! haha!

Not anymore, HW PPV fights numbers are no good anymore, Oscar, PBF, pac and Barrera sells more PPV then any of the HW chumps!
that is true but also if you hold the HW division you control who fights who and where you fight and how but the problem is thr the brother Klit is controling part of the division and Oleg is seperated with them.
but there are some good HW that are not under Don King.
but i dont think that Don King is only into boxing i heard that he owns 30% shares or the MGM hotels and that could tell you something.
he may look like a scourge bum but they guy is really powerful.
Don King still holds the HW division which is consider to be the most money in it.
but he did some great fight long time ago like in the 60s 70s and 80s and evne the 90s.
actually only Don King is the most famous promoter even more famous than DHL
here's the deal on don king:
he is a bastard.
details: the question doesn't necessarily need to be who's career has he fucked up, but how many people's career who weren't under his control did he fuck with? many. actually, if there is a decent fighter not in don's stable of hoes, they have an uphill battle. that is the sole reason why many fighters have signed with him. it's just easier to go with him than battle against him. it's also another reason why i am a big klitschko supporter. the bros are two guys who said "no" from the beginning and continue to battle his bastardly ways.
don king is a bastard.
don king alone has been the reason why many, not all, but many unifications have not been made recently. politics and money - one in the same.
don king is a bastard.
many people will forget, if they even knew about it, that don king had set up a light heavyweight (i think) tournament and rigged every single fight.
yeah, i wrote that right. he rigged every single fight in a supposed tournament. yet, it goes without mention these days. hell, i can't really find a damn thing on it on the internet. somehow, it made its way into some documentary short about him.
fuckin' bastard.
