Oh yay here come the foreign heavyweight champion fans to claim foul play! I was wondering what was taking you guys so long. I mean it is a King fight and the foreigner DID lose, so OBVIOUSLY someone was poisoned. You Klitschko fans crack me up.
I didnt see the fight and am pretty shocked at hearing the outcome. I always thought serge was too green and overrated but I still thought he'd get past briggs who's never won a big fight in his life ( legitimately at least) the last thing I expected was a last round knockout in his favor. what a shocker. what sucks now is that you know king will never allow him to fight wlad or probably even maskeav or valuev for that matter. we need unification and it doesnt seem liekly with king involved
I have never, NEVER seen two men competing for a version of the World Heavyweight Championship who were more unwilling to throw punches.
Liakhovich looked terrified and Briggs looked uncertain as to what to do. Very strange. I don't think King necessarily had anything to do with it; but I would be curious as to the odds of Briggs scoring a 12th round ko...and if anybody collected on such a bet.
What pissed me off was how screwed up that fight was. One of two conclusions can be drawn from that performance: either Liakhovich choked under the spotlight in front of his hometown and Shannon was just being Shannon; and was "pacing himself".
Briggs, seemed to me, was "this close" to a panic attack and if Liakhovich had not been afraid of getting clocked, or so it seemed, and applied the kind of pressure he did to Brewster, he would have gotten him out of there by the 9th as Shannon collapsed from exhaustion.
...OR, something was rotten. What were the odds, I wonder, of Briggs winning by a 12th round KO?

The result pissed me off. A lot of complete noobs to boxing (not you Welter) picked Briggs because of his physique and reputation for knocking out C level fighters alone and now this will fuel their fire even more. Where is the guy with Briggs in his signature? I believe it says something about Briggs being a "great" fighter. Well that guy must be smiling tonight.

Briggs cant be that bad can he? I didnt watch the fight but according to the score cards he had won 4 out of 11 on 2 judges cards and 5 rounds out of 11 on the other judges card and it sounds like briggs smashed him in the final round. If sergei had of raised to his feet after that 2nd knock down, then the score cards would have looked like this 113-113, 113-113 and 114-112 in favour of Briggs. That just seems like a pretty good effort considering alot of people had Sergei as number 2 in their top 10 heavyweights.
He couldn't dodge any punches at that point, as evidenced by him nearly having his head taken off. He could brealy even stand up at that point, he was just laying on the ropes. Even then, Briggs hit him with a helacious right hand, and the ref still didn't jump in.
I'd rather see a fighter upset at the ref than leaving on a stretcher. I'm glad he appeared somewhat coherent in the post-fight interview.
He did it because there was barely any time left and he was the champion. Im ok with that. If he would have dodged two punches he would still be champion.
Well I'm hoping Sergei didn't suffer any serious injury there. That ref had NO BUSINESS letting the fight continue after the first knockdown. Dude could barely stand, and his eyes told a very bad story.
Ref goes "hold you gloves up can you continue?" and doesn't even wait for a decent response. He should have stopped it there, and after Briggs landed another huge right hand. I was adamant here yelling at the TV for the ref to step in.

You have to admit the skills Sergei showed agaisnt Brewster were nowhere to be seen for the most part tonight. Like I said before, weird fight.

I remember Shaun Alexander saying in an interview that he trained with a breathing coach for a couple months and it helped him a lot. Maybe Briggs can go the same route? He has great power when he uses it. He had Sergei hurt so may times, but could not follow up. He looks like he takes short breaths.
Yea that was pretty crazy. Brigg's looked gased from round 2 on. I think he was having breathing problems, that's what it looked like to me.
I'd forgotten about the asthma, thanks for reminding me. I was freaking out when he looked tired after that 1st round cuz I'd forgotten the asthma and just assumed he was in piss poor shape (though his build was incredible)
Liakovich got very lazy and just stood on the ropes absorbing punishment. He caused his own loss. Briggs will lose his soon maybe in his first title defense thats how garbage he was tonight.
