do you guys think cotto's success will continue in the welterweight division? 140 is in no shape or form as competetive as 147. look what happened when hatton moved up. and i don't think that was because it was his first fight. i think collazo would give him problems no matter when he would have faced him. i know it was a lot of hype surrounding cotto before but their aint no pauli's at the top in 147. list of guys i can't see him getting past. mayweather, margarito, judah, paul williams, collazo, and baldamir. truthfully i can't even see him getting past clottey.
Quintana, Collazo, Zab, Margarito, Joel Julio, etc...All those will be hard fights for him, but that's what makes it interesting...
LOL good one.
cotto would destory collazo and julio
I want to believe tha Cotto is a real A level fighter. but he needs a real good test before I take it there. I hope for his sake he comes into 147 and takes on a serious fighter. A match against Collazo would be ideal.
i feel like cotto has been pidgeonholed as a B level fighter at the 140 pound limit, but i feel like a move up to welterweight will have him emerging as a legitimate threat. the boy's a tank, and id see him beating any of the top dogs at 147, aside from mayweather, who's shown that he can counter and defeat the hardest punching stalkers in the game (coralles, for example).
If Cotto gets beat at WW it will be in his first fight or two. If nobody beats him while he is getting used to the weight then he will own the division. Cotto will make weight easier and be a lot better off at 147. PBF vs. Cotto in 2008 will be huge.
maybe he'll start fighting some real competetion @ 147
Hopefully he will and hopefully all the top WWs will aswell. With the HUGE amount of talent I dont know how they have been able to not fight each other for this long. There promoters must be ex-airtraffic controllers.
Before he had weight problems, I saw him take clean shots from Pinto, Bailey and Sosa, who are good punchers and he walked right through them. Not killing himself to make weight the day before will prove to be the difference.
Exactly thats what I was referring too also. Earlier in his career when he was a more natural jrWW. All anyone has to do is look at the recent weight-in pictures of Cotto to realize that he was cutting too much weight and it was harming his fighting ability, even Hatton and his trainer Graham have went on record as stating as much.
With that said I think the fighters to give him trouble at 147lbs wont be the bangers but will be the boxers. I think Cotto has a good chance of can out box and out punch Margarito, Hatton, Urkal, Cintron and Baldomir. However slick boxers who actually have decent power like Zab, Quintana and PBF who will actually be Cotto's biggest problem at 147lbs. At 147lbs the boxers didn't have enough pop to really hurt Cotto so Cotto could just cut of the ring with impunity.
Cotto Has alot of skill and power but that chin isnt going to hold up against some of the big punchers at welter.

i think he will have sucess, but limited amounts. he simply is talented, or strong enough to be a champ. not saying hes bad, because hes not, he is a good fighter, but he will never be a champ. He'll be an exciting fighter, and be a possible contender, but i dont c him being able to win a belt
Cotto has heavy hands...his power WILL carry to 147. I think he'll be better at 147, as he wont have to drain himself to make it. His balance will be better and his fluid boxing ability will come back. I think he'll be able to take a good shot there.
I also think that some of his more fluid boxing and combinations that were seen earlier in his career at 140lbs will reappear at 147lbs. There is also a history of champions who have shown an improved ability to take a punch when they went up in weight, one of the most recent examples of this is Pac, who got KO'd and immediately moved up in weight after that fight. Since then he has shown an improved ability to take punches from guys like JMM, Barrera and Morales.

I really hope Cotto can do well at 147. I think it really depends on whether his chin holds up and how much of his power/strength he takes from 140. I think he'll still be powerful and strong, its his chin that I'm a bit concerned about.
can't wait to see his next fight!
i wonder if adding some weight and being in a heavier weight class might fix his chin a little...
if it does, he could really dominate the WW division.
