HATTON TO VACATE WELTERWEIGHT TITLE TO FACE JUAN URANGO?
By G. Leon
Reliable sources have informed **********.com that Ricky Hatton will vacate his WBA welterweight title in favor of a move back down to junior welterweight to reclaim his IBF title currently held by Juan Urango. When Hatton moved up to welterweight, Urango won the vacant title via controversial decision over Ben Rabah. Hatton had a mis-mandatory with Oktay Urkal due but obviously would prefer to move back down to his more natural weight. Hatton's promoter Artie Pelullo was unavailable for immediate comment. Hatton was originally slated to fight on HBO Dec. 2, but as reported exclusively by **********, Winky Wright now holds that date and undisputed middleweight champion Jermain Taylor will be fightin in Little Rock on December 9 therefore December 16 appears to be the earliest we should expect a Hatton-Urango bout to take place
I'm not a Ricky Hatton fan, so don't believe I am defending him...it just seems to me that when Hatton speaks of this fight he is taking it for exposure. The casual fan, and I mean general sports public, etc., doesn't know shit about weight classes, or big names- they know the fights they see. Hatton-Judah, though suggested in a post earlier, would not be the rough, intense fight Hatton needs to endear himself to the fans here. Judah is too much of a boxer-like Collazo, and would not give him a chance to shine. Mayweather is much the same- and Baldomir is too big for him.
If Hatton wants to look good- I mean show the nobody American fan what he can do- he needs to get into the ring with a smaller, less talanted brawler. That is the reason he would take a Urango fight.
To look good.
we're going to keep waiting, he never had any intentions on fighting Floyd anyways, he got no intentions on fighting anybody who can move and box or punch. IMO, Hatton aint even a boxer, he a wrestler, Ric Flair nephew!!
Hahaha! That shit is funny, but true! :D
Are you serious? This sucks. Terrible decision IMHO. It could be used to set up a fight with castillo but.... Mayweather is up at 147, hes not going to play games with Hatton. Mayweather is what Hatton should be looking for not Castillo. Who cares if he has the belt anyhow? He had a belt at 147 so if Hattons logic is correct, hell beat this guy, and say oh some guy fought for my vacant 147 belt, ill move back up and fight him in order to get a fight with PBF, in an endless cycle. The logic sucks, he doesn't need a belt to make castillo fight him. This is just sad really T-T
i second the motion
I think this may not be the best choice of opponents, but from what I have seen from Juan Urango it could be a high intensity fight. How does Ricky gain from this fight? Well, despite how much credit we have given Collazo for either beating, or putting up a good fight against Hatton (depending on who you ask) Ricky did not look too good. When the casual fan watches the Hatton-Collazo fight, the type of fan that likes to watch a Hatton, or a Williams, or a Margarito- any high volume, pressure fighter, they were bored. Hatton and Collazo did not give them the slugfest they wanted from Ricky's big American fight.
Now, if Ricky puts on a massive brawl against Urango..both men falling onto the canvas, bloody and beaten, and comes out on top- he wins. Why? Because despite the caliber of Juan, despite the ability he possess or his mere standing as a prospect, very casual fans will be gained by watching Ricky whoop ass on some kid in America.
What does Urango-Hatton spell? More intensity than Hatton-Urkal or any other prospective fight he was looking at, with the ability to make the casual fan like him...something he failed to do on his forray into the American boxing world against Collazo. Ricky uses this to endear himself to the dumb, know nothing, casual boxing fan- which he needs. Styles make fights. This will help his career.
I can see what your saying but i dont agree, Rick's next fight isn't going to be against a big name, its who he fights after, if he moves down to 140 beats Urango, then he will probabley fight Castillo after that who else is there Chico maybe Witter or Corley there isn't a lot of options at 140.
If he stays at 147 defends his title then there are massive fights for him Cotto, Baldomir, Margarito, Mayweather, Mosley, at worst it would be Quintana.
No point moving down for a couple of fights then moving back up, he needs to stay at 147.
Thats a lame excuse, Hatton is a world champion and he's fighting a prospect who just recieved a decision from God his last fight. If Hatton wants a high intensity slugfest he could still fight Baldomir, Cotto, Margarito, Judah, even Mayweather if he just says yes. They would all provide him with a fight he's looking for. Shame on any boxing fan defending him fighting a prospect at this stage of his career. Hatton can get any fight from 147-135, but the best he could do is a prospect???
This is shamelss, people on these boards kill Roy Jones Jr. for fighting tomato cans at the end of his career and it looks like Ricky Hatton is doing the same but people are trying to justify it, what a joke.

Hatton should stay at 147 defend his title against Urkal then look 2 fight Cotto or Baldomir, then Mayweather.
There's no point moving back to 140 there's only 1 or 2 really big fights there Castillo & Corrales if he moves up.
If hatton moves back down to 140 i don't think Hatton vs Mayweather will ever happen.
That Lame Duck or Tomato can will end up in a fight with hatton a good one IMO and who knows.Ben Rabah would give Hatton fits too with his dancing around boxing style.
The news about the 13 million Hatton was asking to fight Mayweather was reported on Btalk dot com.
Yes, it will be a fight, but it's a much easier fight than fighting Urkal or any other 147-pounder. Plus, Urango is extremely green and just there for the taking.
I just wish he'd fight someone worth-while and who deserves it. I think we all agree that Urango doesn't deserve a Hatton fight (neither does Urkal, but at least he's a proven fighter).
.............So?
Its just an odd choice to me. Boston is perfect for ricky because of their high concentration of european/english population. Atlanta doesnt have alot of that.
rickey hatton wouldnt fight juan urango in florida, thats just out of the question, seriously, hes taking this fight for an easy win, and you know he saw the rabah/urango fight. hell freezes over before this shit goes down in hollywoodFLA
Normally i'd say that Hatton would beat up Urango, because Urango is still not on the same level. BUT if they fight, and if the fight is going to be in Hollywood Florida then i'll take Urango with another HOMETOWN DECISION............
they won't let Urango lose in Florida, his fight with Ben Rahab and his fight with Mike Araoutis were both scoring travesties.
i had Urango losing both fights and he pulled a draw out of one and he pulled a gift decision out of the other............
it all depends on the geography of the fight...........at least thats the way i see it.....................stirring the pot....
Yeah but I think Hatton KO's him and leaves the judges out of this. He better if he intends on winning. If people think the Forrest-Quartey fight was a robbery... watch Urango-Ben Rabah (and I scored the fight for Quartey)

Floyd has yet to fight some of Kosta's satus when Hatton fought him, you're a biased fan.
I agree with you in theory. Though now after watching more of Hatton I'm starting to think Koz was simply over the hill. Koz hadn't fought regularly for 2 years and his only work was a short fight against Sharmba Mitchell (who is nothing like Hatton). Tyszu in history will go down as a better fighter than Corrales or Castillo, but I think when Floyd fought Corrales that Corrales was in his prime (although his pending jail sentence probably contributed to his awful performance).
That was as bad as robbery I've ever seen, I give Urango 2 rounds, I think I was being nice with one of them. People talk about robberies they shopuld watch this fight, not some close fights.
But also I see Urango giving Hatton a tough fight, styles makes fights, I don't see Hatton boxing around urango the way ben did.
worst decision ever, the scorecards were preposterous
atlas has it 117-110 for rabah, 9 rounds to 3
one of the judges scored it 117-110, 9 rounds to 3 for urango.
when it was announced i sincerely though they read them backwards and were going to come back and announce rabah the winner.
i feel bad for ben rabah.
certainly not an exciting fighter, but a smart and disciplined one, on my scorecard he beat juan urango 8 rounds to 3 with 1 round even. there was never any mention of a rematch and rabah was sent packing back to australia with nothing to show for what was ultimately a dominating performance, i cant imagine how depressing it must have been for him.
now he has to find out that the guy who was given the title is now going to be given a fight with one of the biggest names in the game and will surely capture the biggest payday of his career.
this opp doesent belong to urango, i for one am not going to lose sight of that fact.
You are right and I never really put too much thought into it but Man Ben Rabah must feel like hell because he did what he was supposed to and still got fucked.......Hopefully he fights on and does not retire or anything because he is a decnt fighter.Qaurtey wasted so many years due to seemingly giving up.
I didn't want to put Manfredy in because Mayweather dusted him so easily and so did Corrales. Morales actually struggled with Hernandez and Chavez whereas Mayweather didn't nearly as much.
I wouldn't say Floyd had an easy night with Jesus Chavez. Also, you conveniently left out that Morales has beaten other HOF material such as Daniel Zaragoza and Paulie Ayala. Other very solid opponents like In-Jin Chi and Kevin Kelley.
The main difference between the two is that Morales has fought (and beaten) the best there is to offer at every weight class he's been in. Mayweather has not.
