I loved Whittakers style. He could make other figthters look like amateurs in the ring. He was one slick and elusive dude. Check out his fight against Azumah Nelson, it was a masterful performance. I wish I had that fight.
Whittaker lost to Oscar, but he got robbed against Chavez.
Whitiker hit Chavez low a lot of times. This was my first ppv, Chavez v. Whitiker.

I seen that fight against Azuma that's what you call a real fight.I wish Pernell would get the respect he rightfully deserves as one of the greatest boxers ever to lace em up.
You've obviously never really watched his fights Pernell was one one the craftiest and skilled boxers in history he would get so low on boxers they couldn't hit him. Then he counter punch with some of the fastest punches you've ever seen.If you wanna see a fight of his that was impressive watch Whitaker vs Hurtado or Whitaker vs Chavez.

I scored it for Whitaker, but I suppose I could see how someone had DLH winning by a razor thin margin.
I think people have a tough time scoring Whitaker fights (especially this one) because he fools around in the ring so much. There were several occasions in that fight where DLH would hit Whitaker on the shoulder and he'd physically move across the ring, but it wasn't a clean land.
Whitaker made DLH's skills look ordinary (well he did that to everyone he fought). His jab and short punches worked well when he used him, but he really didn't throw enough early to make it a convincing win. Whitaker did enough to retain his title, even dropping DLH (i know it was somewhat balance but still legit). DLH never landed anything really significant on Whitaker, whose defense was still top notch at that time.
Not a robbery, but the wrong decision in my opinion. Kind of like Ward/Augustus.
i dont exactly remember the scorecard but i think i scored it for sweet pea. sweet pea was robbed in that fight imo.
If you want to say that Pernell won...I guess thats fine but when you go a step farther and call the fight a robbery your off base...a robbery should be saved for what happened to Sweat Pea against JC Superstar...overusing the term like you have done is wrong, right?
Pernell Whitaker was a clever, crafty boxer, but I found his style to be frustrating to watch, rather ugly in fact. He used his right shoulder, did a bit of pushing and clinched at just the right times to avoid getting hit with a clean shot. His style was based mostly on frustrating a clean, classical boxer such as De La Hoya or Julio Cesar Chavez. Whitaker was a cutie rather than a warrior, and though successful, was a negative fighter. He almost never fought on the inside, and few if any of his fights could be called great. He used the tools that he had to win fights, but for fans like me he was a failure as an entertainer and I usually rooted against him.
That being said, I suppose that I would go with the judges in awarding De La Hoya the victory by a small margin, around 3 or 4 points or so. Maybe I'm biased but it's hard not to be in such a matchup. I know that compubox had Whitaker landing a few more punches, but not the big ones.

Noway in hell Oscar lost that fight
I cant remember how I scored it but have always said that people need to shut their mouth when talking about how Sweat Pea got jobbed in that fight.
Like you said King there is no way Oscar lost that fight...it has become a fucking fad to refer to his victory over Whitaker as "controversial"...bullshit it was pretty fucking clear to me!
