Most sane observers would agree that Rahman has little chance in his upcoming fighting with Toney. He's very right hand happy, and that is one of the more difficult shots to land on JT.
In thinking about the styly match up, common sense would dictate that Rock's best chance is to use his size and reach, keep Toney on the end of his jab, and hope for the best.
The worst possible thing he could do (being a clumsy plodding fighter) would be to try and fighting Toney on the inside.
Yet here, in his own words is his plan:
I ain't going to let him lead. All I'm going to do is make him work from round one to round twelve. I don't think he's going to stand up to my constant assault.
If Rahman forces the fight by trying to outwork Toney, he's increasing the chances of getting stopped. Guinn is a much better pressure fighter (activity) than Rahman, and his plan to outwork Toney backfired big time. Toney averaged 80 punches per round for the first two thirds, and upped it to 100 punches per round in the championship rounds. All the while landing at 40+ %.
What is Rahman's best game plan to beat Toney?
Does anyone else think trying to press and outwork Toney would be a stupid idea for him?
Huh? I would expect Rahman to stay outside and use his size to throw about 100 jabs a round. Maybe the Rocks just talking. If seen different fight plans show up at fight night, compared to press conference jazz.
At a certain point, Toney's extra weight is going to start hurting him. Hopefully he'll train very hard for this fight. If he comes in too soft, a guy with a big punch will be able to hurt him. His exceptional stamina won't last forever if he's continually out of shape between fights. I think Toney will win this fight though.
Toney is perhaps the best counterpuncher in the heavies today, he thrives when opponents comes forward and bring the fight to him, look at the Jirov, Guinn fights
the best strategy for Rahman IMO is to keep Toney at the end of his jab, unleashing his power right hand when the oppurtunity presents itself, avoid any close quarters exchanges with JT. just like his smart fight with Tua in their rematch.
Roy Jones believed that Toney could've beaten any current heavyweight with the exception of Rahman. Roy Jones is very educated with the many styles of boxing and so far he has been on point with everything that he has said as an HBO analyst. However, I do not see how Rahman can win this one except using his strength to overpower Toney. I think Rahman got a puncher's chance.
Rahman has not a lot of hope against Toney :
Toney Record : W 69 (43 ko's) | L 4 | D 2 | Total 76
Rahman Record : W 41 (33 ko's) | L 5 | D 1 | Total 47
Toney for me…will their be a vbookie on this event…?
that rediculous plan makes it seem to me that rahman beleives he can keep some distance between them and all he has to do is not fall asleep. Does his height and reach do anything against JT? I doubt it. JT will just go for the body and slip the oncoming punches as we all know he can. Rahman will fade fast.
Who knows....would you have ever thought that Give Em Hell Bell would have went into the ring to stand and throw down like that with Mormeck? He fought Mormeck at his own game (largely) and outlasted him...
Now I know this fight is a different animal I was just making the connection because of Bells shocking approach to the fight and the shocking results.
If Rahman stands a chance while fighting that way the chance is most certainly landing a couple of big right hands later in the fight that Toney won't see. He'd be better served however to throw those punches from the outside, as his power is most definitely better when he lands long power shots. The nice overhand right probably won't do him any good. It's also going to be hard for him to muster the strength to dent Toneys chin late in the fight (a problem many Toney opponents have) because of the severe beating his body is going to take.
Basically, I think it will be a big time Rahman beatdown at the hands of Toney.
You bring up a good point in regards to the shock factor with Bell Mormeck, but a lot of that had to do with Mormeck getting gassed so quickly.
We know Toney's stamina is off the charts. He was soft and in poor shape in with Guinn and throwing 800+ punches looked like another day at the office for him.
Outworking and trying to tire Toney just doesn't seem like a good idea.
And when you consider Toney's best rounds are always 9-12 and Rahman (when he's been in those rounds) seems tired and faded and that point, it does look bleek for him.
Maybe he's just talking shit with that comment. Because I would think Rock would know that he'll live and die with his jab, not his workrate.
