Jones Jr. broken legacy?

I think James Toney has accomplished more and will accomplish more. Toney won titles at every weight class he ever fought at. Big deal. Roy pot-shotted one heavyweight to death. Toney beat the shit out of the same heavyweight and he's done it to three others. You can certaintly make a case that Toney has been more successful. I like both fighters. My Top three favorite fighter list goes Jones, Tyson and Toney. Your right Diego, Toney may unify the title before he retires.

The guy was one of the best fighters of his generation and an all time great. You've proven over and over that you don't like him. That's your porogotive, but the ensuing hatred and questioning his greatness is tiresome. No offense to Diego. But I have to agree with you. Roy had a great career, he won titles from 160-heavyweight. Thats impressive even if some of the fighters are bums. :D

Look, I think Roy is amazingly skilled, but he knew he couldn't bang with the big boys so he never tried. First time he went up against a guy I considered a big puncher that was also a skilled fighter, he got beat up. Then he got knocked out. I mean, if Roy had fought guys like DM and beat them, I would be like you guys and say Roy lost to Tarver cuz he's old or out of his prime or whatever (even though his speed is still there, which means his punch is still there) :rolleyes: But the point is he didn't. He beat Toney who was the #1 guy in boxing at the time and he sat on his perch for 10 years. Floyd Mayweather has already started a career that will easily surpass Roy's. Mayweather beat Chavez, Corrales, and Castillo (twice), and now he's fighting Judah! I hate Floyd as a person and I love Roy as far as being smart about boxing goes, but Roy doesn't take risks, even compared to guys like Mayweather. Only now at the end of his career is Roy quick to sign contracts and make fights and milk himself for every penny he's worth, but I will NOT consider him one of the greatest ever. I'm sorry, I just won't do it. It's hard to criticize people for not fighting every single one of the best fighters around. Unfortunately, in modern boxing, promoters like to protect their fighters records. When a fight doesn't occur between to champs, they're both going to say it didn't happen because of the other guy. It's pretty much pointless to debate which of the two was in the wrong, and I think most of the time the problem is the promoters and money.

He never fought the "other" Light Heavyweight most people wanted to see him fight, even though I was on Roy's side for not going to Germany. But still...what did Roy really do that was so great? I think he's fun as hell to watch, but he didn't exactly prove all the naysayers wrong...ever... See, this argument about being exposed as having no chin late in your career is pretty much invalid. You can actually lose your chin over time. Your brain can't really heal, so at some point, it's going to tell you when you should stop. Some guys get lucky and never get knocked out, but that's a rarity. Eventually, age and miles put on the body will catch up with you, and you will taste the canvas. Roy lost his chin "suddenly," because Tarver landed a perfect counter punch on him. I definitely wouldn't say that exposed him as having a bad chin. It was just the right punch to damage his chin for good. And I know people will argue with me about this, but it's just how brain damage works. Your brain shuts off when it can't take the punishment anymore.

If you dig deep enough, I'm sure you can find dirt like people have on Roy on almost any great fighter. There are some fights that just never take off, and that was the case with many of his fights. There was also the case of a guy being way passed his prime and Roy having no reason to fight him anymore when Roy was on the scene. Say what you want about him, but he was great.

Anyhow, I agree with the general sentiment here, that a fighter's legacy is not ruined by continuing to fight in the tail end of his career. No one speaks badly of Ali, Robinson, Leonard, or Louis, so why speak badly of Roy because he's losing now?

When it comes to things like this you have to ask yourself, how good were the guys the figher (in this case Jones) loss to and would he have unquestionably beat them in his prime.

hmm Basically, this whole movement by some fringe people that Roy's legacy is "ruined" is a facade for their hate of Roy Jones. Roy is an all time great, like it, love it, or hate it. People like to talk non sense. Ray Robinson lost 6 fights in his last year fighting, and to unknown and poor opposition. Look at Ray Leonard's last fights with Norris and Camacho... Ali agaisnt Holmes and Berbick... It doesn't matter. Great fighters don't know when to quit, and years later, are remembered for what made them great. Not what came on their way down.
