That display by Peter was atrocious. If he could have thrown one straight punch the few times he had Klitchko hurt it would have been lights out.
I never understood why a pro fighter, usually hvweights, can't learn to throw a straight punch. What do they spend the hours in the gym doing? Just think about it, Klitchko throws a perfect straight right and he clearly takes time to perfect his holding techniques too.
Anyone have a clue about why throwing straight punches is so diffcult for some fighters?
Not only that it really tough for some guys to generate power with a straight punch. Marciano threw a beautiful straight right but that’s because he kept it cocked up right so it would come out as a straight angle. When learning how to fight I copied Marciano’s right but unlike Marciano I don’t turn my hand I keep my thumb point to the sky and twist a little on impact.
it was my first time i have watched peter fight live..........i only ever saw KO clips...........within the first 30 seconds i was shocked at how slow and simple peter was.............and i was rooting bad for the underdog........
at that stage i said that wlad should have him out in the first couple rounds.........wlad is shite though big time and that was probably the worst Win i've ever seen from a heavyweight.......that's a pussy win by holding, hugging, clinching, tying up , and running scared.........and in the process gettin kd'd three times...
credit to samuel for doing a good job and giving klitschko all he had.........peter needs to lose 10-15 pounds and work on speed and technique....otherwise he can't box with top 10 fighters..
nyahahahahaha. nice post.
If he would have been in better shape he would have been 10-15 # lighter. And the clinching is part of stratgy of not getting ko'd by a big round house slugger.
If you remember the Ali vs Forman he didn't throw many if any straight punches, muscle bound. and I think Lewis & both Klitch. bros. throw a hell of a straight punch.
IMO, it depends on the fighter
the longer rangier fighter can thro the straight ones
but like tyson, peter, tua cant. the stockier and compact kinda fighters cant do it
great example...Tito, Tyson, and Tua (TTT) have short reach and work on getting inside to throw hooks...while guys like Winky and Wlad have long reach and height to throw long range and straighter punches

Holyfield did the same thing against Tyson in their first meeting and he was considered a brilliant strategist because of it and the same goes for Muhammad Ali , he held alot in his fights and he is considered the greatest of all time. Did you hear what Foreman said when Lederman mentioned about the holding, Foreman said and I quote "Muhammad Ali did the same thing he held alot and used it to his advantage".

it is interesting how a question like this gets little attention on here. maybe it's a stoopid ? in the first place. It;s just something i never could figure out about certain fighters. I mean even a clubber like George Foreman could throw a straight punch. If he weren't able to he NEVER would have regained the title.
i get your explanation, but it seems it's a question of discipline and not instincts, as you say. All fighters should be able to throw straight punches and have it in their arsenal.
because not everyone is the same...fighters fight differently...some guys like Tito, Tua, Mosley, Peter naturally throw hooking punches...some guys like Winky, Wlad, and Kostya naturally throw straight punches...once it is your temperament...it comes naturally and hard to just change...you don't really know until you step in that ring and see that your straight punches are not landing or getting through your opponent's gaurd...anyone can throw a straight one in sparring...but it is different in that ring...

Honestly, why is it so hard for a pro to throw a straight punch? | BoxingScene Community
