By Thomas Gerbasi - After seeing a September 4 bout with Victor Vazquez get canceled, Cletus Seldin decided to go for a little run for his birthday a week later. How little? “Only” 35 miles. It’s “only” 35 because the year before, Seldin ran 50 miles on September 11.
By Thomas Gerbasi - Bruce Carrington has been on BoxingScene.com longer than most staffers here, so it’s only fitting that “Shu Shu” checks back in before his first pro bout this Saturday against Cesar Cantu on the Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder III undercard in Las Vegas.
By Thomas Gerbasi - A week from Saturday, Efe Ajagba will step into the ring at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and get the crowd ready for the third Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder bout by facing off with fellow unbeaten Frank Sanchez in the evening’s co-main event.
By Thomas Gerbasi - There will never be another Muhammad Ali. If you didn’t know that already, one look at Ken Burns’ documentary series on “The Greatest” is a good primer and reminder of that fact. But that’s okay. Time moves on, and if there were 10 versions of Ali showing up after he threw his last punch, then we wouldn’t remember what he did in and out of the ring and what he meant to a generation of people around the globe.
By Thomas Gerbasi - A visit to the gym where Katie Taylor trains in Connecticut in early 2018 said everything you needed to know about the undisputed lightweight champion. It’s a small place, no tanning beds, no smoothie bar, with the only “ornaments” being various banners celebrating some of the fighters who work there.
By Thomas Gerbasi - Whatever David Haye is getting paid by Triller for his Saturday bout with friend and temporary rival Joe Fournier is not nearly enough. Simply put, the former cruiserweight and heavyweight champion, who has always been gifted at selling a fight, is in promotional overdrive for this card, which is headlined by a matchup pitting 58-year-old Evander Holyfield against former UFC champion Vitor Belfort and a clash of two more former UFC stars in Anderson Silva and Tito Ortiz.
By Thomas Gerbasi - On Sunday, September 5, Xander Zayas turns 19 years old. It feels like several years since he turned 18, and with a laugh, he agrees. “Tell me about it,” said the affable Puerto Rican prospect, who makes his fourth start of the year on September 10th’s Oscar Valdez-Robson Conceicao undercard.
By Thomas Gerbasi - Monte Cox has been in the combat sports business for a long time, most notably as the manager of some of the best mixed martial artists to ever grace the Octagon or ring. As such, he’s seen the good, bad and the ugly of the fight game, something that gets amped up when he puts on his promoter’s hat. Subsequently, he’s not one to throw praise around lightly, so if he does, you listen.
By Thomas Gerbasi - Jessica Camara didn’t get an eight-week training camp for her first world title fight this Friday night in El Cajon, California. But she doesn’t mind. Not one bit. When IBF junior welterweight champion Mary McGee suffered a knee injury and was forced out of this week’s bout against Victoria Bustos that was also scheduled to be fought for the vacant WBO title, Camara didn’t hesitate to say yes to the short-notice assignment, which airs on UFC Fight Pass. And if you think that the Canadian is showing up for a payday, consider that at the time of this interview on August 9, she was already on weight. All that was left from that point was for the 33-year-old from Montreal to get herself focused for the biggest fight of her career.
As Team Great Britain fought their way to six medals in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, few were as proud as their bronze medalist from the 2016 games in Rio, Joshua Buatsi.
