Teammates Reflect on Alleged Boston Bomber Tsarnaev

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the alleged Boston Marathon bomber who was killed Thursday night, was once an amateur boxer who represented the New England regional team as a 201-pound heavyweight in the National Golden Gloves. BoxingScene.com/CSNBayArea.com spoke to two of his teammates who participated with Tsarnaev during that tournament, as well as a third boxer who interacted with Tsarnaev when he trained at the Boston Boxing & Fitness gym in Brighton, Mass.

Andre Ward was ringside for his childhood friend Nonito Donaire’s Saturday night title loss to Guillermo Rigondeaux in New York City’s Radio City Music Hall, and the super middleweight world champion gave Comcast SportsNet Bay Area his take on the fight. “From a personal standpoint, I’m disappointed, but you gotta take your hat off to Rigondeaux. He did what he had to do,” Ward said. “These things happen in boxing, especially when you have a guy like Nonito, who’s fighting the best, fight in and fight out. “He’s not getting soft touches. There’s no machine pushing him and trying to make him into a star. He’s making himself a star by fighting the best, and when you fight the best, these kind of things happen. Nonito didn’t get beat up tonight. He fought a competitive fight. It just didn’t go his way.”

Donaire To Get Surgery on Shoulder, Talks 12th Round

In a Sunday interview with BoxingScene.com/CSNBayArea.com, Nonito Donaire revealed that he would undergo surgery on his right shoulder after his unanimous decision defeat to Guillermo Rigondeaux on Saturday night for the junior featherweight world championship. “[The shoulder] hasn’t been feeling good for a while, so I’m going to get surgery on it, take some time off to be with Rachel and the baby, and then get back in the ring after that,” said Donaire, whose wife Rachel is pregnant with their first child, a boy they plan to name Jarel. In his postfight interview with HBO’s Max Kellerman, Donaire (31-2, 20 KOs) indicated that he was going under the knife, but did not specify which shoulder would be treated until now. Another pivotal moment in the fight was the emergence of a sizable welt under Donaire’s right eye in the 12th and final round. From ringside, it appeared that a sharp left hand from Rigondeaux (12-0, 8 KOs) early in the frame was the culprit, but Donaire pondered whether the eye had already begun to swell before that.

Golovkin, Loeffler Discuss HBO Macklin Matchup on 6/29

So far, Gennady Golovkin has steamrolled any opposition to his middleweight title belt, and his constant activity in 2013 is a welcome anomaly in this era of pro boxing where the best fighters appear once or twice a year if the fans are lucky. On June 29th, the Kazakhstan knockout king will take on his toughest challenger yet in Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KOs) at the Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, Conn. HBO will televise the bout. Despite sporting an official 1-2 record in his last three outings, many if not most observers had Macklin beating Felix Sturm, he was stopped by Sergio Martinez but led on the cards at the time, and surprisingly blasted Joachim Alcine in one. In that same period, Golovkin knocked out all six of his foes, running his streak to 13. However, his quality of opposition does not stack up to Macklin’s, which makes this fight anything but an easy win for the Kazakh. Earlier tonight, BoxingScene.com interviewed Macklin and his promoter Lou DiBella for their thoughts on the matchup. Bradley Wants Marquez Next—Not Pacquiao Rematch

Timothy Bradley was all smiles at the 2013 Boxing Writers Association of America dinner Thursday night at New York City’s Capitale. At the beginning of the evening, the welterweight titleholder was reunited with the second half of the early front-runner of Fight of the Year, Ruslan Provodnikov, who promptly asked him for a rematch as the two men shook hands. Bradley obliged and told Provodnikov that he would get his return bout sometime in the future. After the Russian challenger left, Bradley spoke about the redemption he felt after standing toe-to-toe with his last foe en route to victory, especially given the controversial nature and aftermath from his penultimate outing against Manny Pacquiao last year.

Donaire Spars 12 Rounds, Submits to VADA Testing

Junior featherweight world champion Nonito Donaire had a busy Tuesday, completing an intense 12 rounds of sparring, a strength and conditioning workout, and ending the afternoon with a random drug test. Donaire (31-1, 20 KOs) is in the final week of preparation leading up to his HBO-televised April 13 showdown in New York City’s Radio City Music Hall for 122-pound supremacy with fellow titleholder Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KOs).

Raymundo Beltran is enjoying a career resurgence, and the unlikely lightweight contender is on the verge of making a move that could expedite the process to a title shot. “We’re talking to Top Rank right now toward finalizing a [promotional] contract,” said Steven Feder, Beltran’s manager. “It’s a very good family feeling over there. We were down there in Texas with [CEO] Bob [Arum] for a presser with George Foreman. Ray really enjoyed that. Bob took us to lunch afterward, and it really meant a lot to Ray.” After gutsy back-to-back wins over Hank Lundy and Ji-Hoon Kim, Beltran (27-6, 17 KOs) has gone from being most known for his exploits as Manny Pacquiao’s sparring partner to a fighter making his own name in the sport.

Karim Mayfield Eyes Saturday’s Rios-Alvarado Winner

Junior welterweight contender Karim Mayfield will be watching this Saturday’s rematch between Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado very closely, and with good reason. “Mark Rios from the WBO told my team that I’m going to be the number one contender, so I definitely want the winner and get a shot at a title,” Mayfield told BoxingScene.com/CSNBayArea.com on Wednesday. Rios-Alvarado II will have the WBO 140-pound interim world title at stake, and with full-fledged titleholder Juan Manuel Marquez likely to stay north at welterweight, Saturday’s victor would theoretically occupy his spot.

Ruben Guerrero Talks Family Bond, Floyd Sr. Feud, More

Ruben Guerrero distinguished his father-son relationship from that of Floyd Mayweather Sr. and his son as the two teams continue marching toward their May 4 clash in Las Vegas. The elder Guerrero, who was a 2012 finalist for the Boxing Writers Association of America’s Trainer of the Year Award, talked about the cohesion he shares with his son Robert, currently an 11-to-1 underdog. “Me and Robert, we’re a team, and we’re always together,” Guerrero told BoxingScene.com/CSNBayArea.com. "I’m there every day training him, and making sure everything’s right…They’re going to see what Robert can do on May 4.”
