Promoters Bob Arum and Gary Shaw recently went back and forth in this space on the subject of a possible Timothy Bradley-Manny Pacquiao fight. Arum, Pacquiao's promoter, was asked if Bradley would be a viable opponent for Pacquiao should a fight not get made between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
By Robert Morales - Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero had just stopped Edel Ruiz in the first round on the January 2009 undercard of the "Sugar" Shane Mosley-Antonio Margarito welterweight title fight at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Guerrero was all smiles as he sat in a chair on press row talking to reporters. He was happy to have beaten Ruiz. But the bulk of his happiness came from having received a phone call from his wife, Casey, during the weigh-in for that fight. She told her husband she had just been declared in remission from her leukemia, which she was diagnosed with in November 2007. Unfortunately, the leukemia returned that August, not long after Guerrero beat Malcolm Klassen to win the super featherweight world championship; Guerrero had already won a featherweight belt. "It's just like getting your head knocked off, knowing what you have already been through with her and seeing what she had been through," said Guerrero, who will take on Joel Casamayor on July 31 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on the undercard of Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz II. "It's like, 'Here we go again.' "It was tough to find out she relapsed again and that you have to go through the whole process. You can only go through so many treatments when your body stops taking the chemotherapy. Chemo only works so long. As you relapse, the sickness gets immune to it and it keeps coming back."
Promoter Dan Goossen on Tuesday told BoxingScene.com that a deal has been reached for heavyweight Chris Arreola to square off with Manny Quezada on Aug. 13 at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif.
Promoter Bob Arum this week scoffed at the notion he wants only his Top Rank Inc. boxers to fight the company's cash cow, Manny Pacquiao. This comes on the heels of fellow promoter Gary Shaw last week telling BoxingScene.com that Arum isn't willing to consider non-Top Rank fighters for Pacquiao's next fight should a fight not get made for Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Promoter Bob Arum said last week on BoxingScene.com that he doesn't think there would be any real money in a fight between welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and junior welterweight champ Timothy Bradley should a fight not get made between Pacquiao and Mayweather.
By Robert Morales - Richard Schaefer couldn't believe it has been 10 years since "Sugar" Shane Mosley's birth into big-time boxing - a thrilling split-decision victory over Oscar De La Hoya on June 17, 2000, at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Once Schaefer took it in after being told of the anniversary, he realized it would make a Mosley return to Staples Center this year even more meaningful. "That is a very interesting thing," said Schaefer, CEO of De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, to BoxingScene.com. "I might mention that to him (Mosley) as well, maybe use that as the beginning of the last chapter of Shane Mosley's career and move forward." One thing is certain, Schaefer and Golden Boy will play host to a card at Staples Center on Sept. 18. The week's festivities will celebrate the 200-year anniversary of Mexico's independence. One thing not so certain is the headlining fight, but Schaefer on Tuesday confirmed it could be Mosley against Sergio Mora at 154 pounds, a weight at which both are former world champions.
Dan Goossen promotes former welterweight champion Paul Williams, who hasn't fought at that weight in two years. Goossen said he expects Williams' next fight to be back at welterweight.
By Robert Morales - Promoter Gary Shaw is not one to mince words. It was no different this week when he took a shot at Golden Boy Promotions and some of its fighters regarding a junior welterweight tournament Shaw said he recently pitched to HBO executives. The tournament could feature the likes of champions Timothy Bradley, Devon Alexander, Amir Khan and, perhaps, Juan Manuel Marquez should Marquez beat Juan Diaz in a July 31 rematch. Shaw - who promotes Bradley - said HBO big-shots like his idea, but that Khan and Golden Boy - which promotes Khan and Marquez - are not interested. Shaw said he was in New York last week continuing a month-long sales job to HBO. "The problem is, Amir Khan obviously doesn't like the idea and I would assume Golden Boy doesn't like the idea, too," Shaw said. "But we would do it and Devon Alexander would do it. And you can confirm it. It's just a call. I'll give you Richard Schaefer's number if you want it. "You call him and ask him if Amir Khan will fight Tim Bradley, or (Marcos) Maidana will fight Tim Bradley. Or Marquez will fight Tim Bradley. You'll get your answers direct."
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer informed BoxingScene.com that he is working on Amir Khan's next fight, which he is hopeful will take place on July 31 in England. Two of the possible opponents for Khan's next defense of the WBA junior welterweight title - are former champions Joel Casamayor and Michael Katsidis.
By Robert Morales - Promoter Bob Arum was in New York City on Tuesday for a Yuri Foreman workout at Gleason's Gym ahead of Foreman's junior middleweight title defense against former junior welterweight and welterweight champion Miguel Cotto on June 5 at Yankee Stadium. Arum promotes both fighters, but perhaps the most intrigue centers on Cotto and how war-torn he might be after taking a lot of punishment in losses to Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao, as well as in his split-decision victory over Joshua Clottey. Those were three of his past four fights. Does Cotto have to prove he's still a world-class fighter and not shot, Arum was asked? "I don't think he has to prove anything to anyone," was Arum's initial response. But Arum did speak in frank tones regarding the past two years of Cotto's career. "Obviously, sometimes, when a fighter gets beat like that, like he did with Margarito and then with Pacquiao, it does take a lot out of him," Arum said to BoxingScene.com. "Whether it has in this case, we'll know on June 5.
