Cesar Seda is confident that after his return on Aug. 19 in Ponce, his handlers will secure him another title shot at 115 pounds and does not rule out a rematch with Argentine champion Omar Narvaez, the reigning king of the WBO, who dealt the Puerto Rican boxer his first loss as a pro a few months ago.
Puerto Rican prospect José Pedraza will end the year fighting at 130 pounds but during the first quarter of 2012 he plans to move up to the lightweight division where he hopes to win his first world title. Pedraza (3-0, 3KOs) returns on August 19th in Puerto Rico and then has another fight scheduled for October 28th. Pedraza is co-promoted by the trio of Lou DiBella, Universal Promotions and Gary Shaw.
Ivan Calderon is dropping weight slowly and expects to regain the title of the WBO, at 105 pounds, when he faces the reigning champion Raul Garcia (30-1, 18KOs) on October 28th in Puerto Rico, during the annual convention of the WBO. Calderon (24-2-1, 6KOs) said the minor layoff after suffering his second KO loss to Giovani Segura, did wonders for his body and his motivation.
The outlook for a rematch between WBO super bantamweight champion Jorge 'Travieso' Arce and Wilfredo 'Papito' Vazquez looks uncertain because the Mexican champion has expressed interest in going down to 118-pounds to fight for the WBC crown, which is currently held by Filipino Nonito Donaire, who also holds the WBO's version in that division.
The president of the Universal Promotions, Javier Bustillo, announced his plan to stage and event on 28th of October in Guayama, with two unbeaten Puerto Rican boxers, Jose Pedraza and junior middleweight Jonathan 'Butter' Gonzalez (14-0, 13KOs) in separate bouts. Pedraza will first return on August 19th in Ponce, where super flyweight Cesar Seda will return against Yan Barthelemy. Bustillo wants to get title shots for several of his boxers in 2012.
Prospect Jesus Rojas will make his return to on Saturday, August 6th, at the Parque del Este in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. With a professional record of 17 wins, one loss, and 12 wins by knockout, he scored a major victory over Mexico's Isaac Hidalgo on March 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The planned October card is starting to take shape. Roman "Rocky" Martinez, the former junior lightweight champion of the WBO, has advised BoxingScene.com that he reached a two-year promotional agreement with Top Rank and his first fight will be on October 1 at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
BoxingScene.com has been advised that Mexico's Antonio "The Tijuana Tornado" Margarito was cleared by doctors to return to action on December 3 at Madison Square Garden in New York, for a scheduled rematch with the current 154-pound champion of the WBA , Miguel Cotto.
On either October 1 or 15, Juan Manuel Lopez would like to have his rematch with WBO featherweight champion Orlando "Siri" Salido of Mexico, but according to confidential sources who are close to Salido, the tough Mexican would like to make a couple of more defenses and then face Lopez in the first quarter of 2012. Besides the two dates in October, the date of November 5 has also been ringing out for a Junama-Salido rematch.
Undefeated junior middleweight Eliezer 'Waa' Gonzalez, who is said to fight on August 19 in a card being put together by Universal Promotions in Ponce, Puerto Rico, would like to fight boxer like Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, the WBC champion at 154 pounds, and Miguel Cotto, junior middleweight king of the WBA in the future, but feels that he might be ready to face former champions like Carlos 'El Indio' Quintana and Kermit Cintron by the end of the year.
