By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Deontay Wilder is fighting this weekend. But it’s OK if you hadn’t heard. After all, it’s on the same night as the lightweight title rematch between Devin Haney and George Kambosos Jr., a fight that’s gotten (and deserves) more attention.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Maybe it’s the hurricane shutters. While buffeting the Tuesday morning estate against the imminent arrival of the first big storm to approach Southwest Florida this season, I got to thinking about the future. Of the world in general. Of the neighborhood in particular.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Ladies and gentlemen, Canelo Alvarez is back in the building. And now that he's capped his Gennadiy Golovkin trilogy with an intermittently impressive unanimous decision victory, the cinnamon-haired Mexican can get back to his other vocation. Matchmaking. The pay-per-view stalwart has his pick of the litter when it comes to his next event, which he suggested Saturday may occur next spring to allow time for rest and surgery on a damaged left hand.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - When it comes to boxing, Canelo Alvarez doesn't want for much. He turned pro as a teen, was a champion at 20 and has made more money across nearly 17 years in the ring than legends like Joe Louis, Ray Robinson or Muhammad Ali ever dreamed.
It's already been 1,452 days. And if all goes to plan, it will be another 11 more. But regardless of when it occurs, one thing's for certain: Gennady Golovkin is looking forward to getting his hands on Canelo Alvarez a third time.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - It’s not easy. But Oleksandr Usyk makes it look that way. The Ukrainian phenom collected every belt to be had at cruiserweight before ditching the bejeweled stash, packing on a few pounds, and girding himself to chase glory at heavyweight.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - It’d be hard to find a bigger Anthony Joshua fan than I was. Though wiping out the worst title claimant of a generation (Charles Martin, blech!) wasn’t exactly the most compelling way to win a heavyweight title, I remember sitting in the press room at the MGM Grand Garden Arena that spring night in 2016 thinking, “OK, this guy’s going to be a big star.”
Long before there was a Canelo Alvarez, there was a Salvador Sanchez. Sanchez was born in 1959 in Santiago Tianguistenco, a city of 60,000-plus residents in south central Mexico that sits about 325 miles from Tlajomulco de Zuniga – where Alvarez arrived in 1990.
Anthony Joshua should be quite proud of the career he’s had. He’s an Olympic gold medalist. He’s won 24 of 26 pro bouts and 22 by knockout. And he’s a two-time heavyweight champion with seven successful title defenses. But he’s got a big date coming up.
Past the sell-by date. Jumped the shark. Outlived its usefulness. Myriad phrases exist to label situations where something has gone on for a little bit too long. It can apply to relationships, television shows, jobs … or a million other things.
