By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Remember Guillermo Rigondeaux? You know, he was the guy who had a spectacular amateur career – including two Olympic golds and two world championships – then turned pro and won and defended a title by the time he’d hit 10 fights.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - It’s almost hard to fathom. Whether or not you give full weight to Manny Pacquiao’s career accomplishments, you must at least respect the fact that the Filipino star has been operating at a world-class level for a long time.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Manny Pacquiao. Say the name and you’re sure to get a reaction. The huge majority would brand him a generational superstar thanks to a championship climb that’s earned him sanctioning body recognition in seven weight classes. And even those who scoff at some of the achievements have no choice but to give him respect for still chasing greatness less than six months before his 43rd birthday.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Every now and then, the tinkering mood just hits. Especially when I’m feeling bored, introspective, forward-thinking … whatever, and I begin pondering ways in which I can make the things I genuinely enjoy even better.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - It’s no easy task. Nevertheless, it’s a challenge I provide myself when I endeavor to pick the year’s top upset, knockout and fight – in addition to fighter of the year.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Gervonta Davis is an undeniably bad man. Or, in boxing parlance... a baaaad man. He fights with a fury reminiscent of those who came decades before, tenaciously engaging in games of violent pursuit and capture until inevitably – at least so far – his hand is raised.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Four weeks out from a big fight, some folks out there are surely thinking it. But we'll go ahead and say it. Tyson Fury is the most physically daunting heavyweight champion who's ever lived. And when you blend athletic ability with a gargantuan 81-inch, 273-pound frame, it's hard to imagine anyone who's ever appeared in boxing's marquee division stepping into a 20 x 20 square and convincingly having their way with him.
It wasn’t an official fight, but the four-round exhibition between Julio Cesar Chavez and Hector Camacho Jr. atop the Tribute to the Kings pay-per-view show at Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico had all the elements of a classic Mexico vs. Puerto Rico showdown.
Anderson Silva looked far more like a world-class boxer than his ex-middleweight champion opponent, carrying his skills over from the UFC cage to win a split decision over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in their sanctioned eight-round bout on the Tribute to the Kings at Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico.
