By Lyle Fitzsimmons - There are a couple things I’ve always promised myself. I barely play golf. But if I was ever lucky enough to score a hole in one, I’ve vowed to pluck the ball out of the cup, slide the club into the bag and head straight to my car – because it’ll never get any better.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Hey, whaddya know? It’s the penultimate Tuesday in 2021’s boxing reality. Yes, that reality. The one that’s been overtaken by the likes of Jake Paul. Love it or loathe it, the bratty Ohioan and his wannabe older brother have become the straws that stir the in-ring drink. Don’t think so? Still refusing to believe it?
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Forget penciling it in. As far as Gilberto Ramirez is concerned, you can go ahead and confirm the phone call that he and his managerial team will be making come Monday morning.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - I’m as much a fan of nostalgic references as anyone. But no, the fighters campaigning to be the man at lightweight these days ought to remind precisely no one of the “Four Kings” era from the 1980s. Lest anyone without a YouTube account forget, the quartet that campaigned in boxing’s last truly great generation included Roberto Duran, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns and Ray Leonard and won virtually every meaningful fight from welterweight to middleweight from 1980 to 1987.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Let’s say there’s a result. One that nearly every reputable, non-partisan onlooker suggests is valid. Not to mention many more that were actually on the loser’s side, too. Nevertheless, the entity on the short end of said result continues to rant and rave about how it was rigged or stolen or somehow the product of a nebulous establishment conspiracy against him.
By Lyle Fizsimmons - Let’s get this on the record. I think Terence Crawford is the best welterweight in the world. And, if it ever happens, I think he’ll handle Errol Spence to prove that very point. But I’m tired of wondering about it. I’m tired of thinking about it. I’m tired of rationalizing why either team might be avoiding the fight if they indeed have been.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - There was a time I was all in. More than seven years ago, as I sat a few rows from the ring at the DC Armory – in town to do a story on the latest Adrien Broner renaissance – I believed Shawn Porter was the future of the welterweights.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - It was the moment David Benavidez has waited for. As Showtime’s pay-per-view hosts wound down their broadcast early Sunday morning, they began suggesting foes who might share the marquee the next time the Canelo circus pulls into town.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - I like Caleb Plant. A lot. I like the way he fights. I like how communicative he is in interviews. And I like the fact that I saw him working out in a county park in Las Vegas when my family and I were out there a few months back.
By Lyle Fitzimmons - Every now and then, you see it. You may not even be able to specifically define it, but it’s there. Such is the case with Shakur Stevenson. Maybe you notice his footwork. Perhaps you focus on his hand speed. Or it could be the way he carries himself before a significant fight.
