WE RETURN TO the setting of quite possibly the best atmosphere in English boxing on Saturday when we have the pleasure of staging another Josh Warrington world title fight night in Leeds at the FD Arena. It is no secret – and both myself and Josh have placed on record – that we were seeking a unification clash for our man after he completed his mandatory obligation with the IBF against Kid Galahad in June.
DANIEL DUBOIS ONCE again demonstrated that he is the new and irresistible force of the heavyweight scene with his one round destruction of Ebenezer Tetteh to win the Commonwealth title, but he was not alone in leaving a lasting impression at the Royal Albert Hall on Friday night. Daniel’s late shift against the previously unbeaten Ghanaian was short and particularly sweet. He just came out from his corner and immediately reminded everyone what he is all about. His boxing skills are improving all the time and he just took his opponent apart with his powder keg jab.
ON FRIDAY EVENING we once again return boxing to the grand old stage of the Royal Albert Hall. We were there in March – only the second promotion held at the South Kensington venue in the last 20 years – and it would be true to say the historic setting has lost nothing of its ability to inspire both fighters and fans alike.
ALL THINGS BEING well with the healing process from his eye injuries, Tyson Fury now remains firmly on course for the blockbuster rematch with Deontay Wilder early next year. The best laid plans can quickly evaporate and come to nothing in boxing and Tyson’s date with the Bronze Bomber might well have had to be aborted had the referee and doctor deemed that the cuts inflicted by Otto Wallin were just too severe to continue.
OUR FIRST WIN of the day over in Las Vegas came when we won the purse bid to stage the WBO world bantamweight title clash between our man Zolani Teteand the Interim champion John Riel Casimero. We are working on a venue for it at the moment and we want to get Zolani back and rolling again after the disappointment for him of having to withdraw from the World Boxing Super Series due to injury.
THE NO.1 HEAVYWEIGHT in world boxing is once again Vegas-bound this weekend as he continues his charm offensive on the American market and demonstrate why there is nobody else like him in the division. Tyson Fury enters into just his fifth fight since making his return to the ring in June 2018 and will take on the 20-0 Swede Otto Wallin at the T-Mobile Arena. It is a huge weekend for boxing Stateside, with the date usually occupied by Canelo and Floyd Mayweather before him, but this year our unbeaten lineal champion takes centre stage.
THERE HAS BEEN a bit of back and forth over the last week over a potential coming together of heavyweight giants Joe Joyce and Jarrell ‘Big Baby’ Miller. It was disappointing for Joe when Agit Kabayel withdrew himself from defending his European title against the Olympic silver medallist, but Miller was quick to put his name in the frame.
A BRITISH AUDIENCE was treated to seeing the majestic movements of Vasyl Lomachenko first hand on Saturday night but one man – a boxing figure from the past – was seemingly not impressed with what he witnessed from the magical Ukrainian.
ON THE CUSP of stepping into world title action is our super lightweight contender Jack Catterall. Jack holds the mandatory spot with the WBO but his accession has been held up a bit due to the recent unification clash between Maurice Hooker and the WBC champion Jose Ramirez.
On the subject of featherweights, we’ve got our man, the IBF world champion Josh Warrington in the division – and, no, I am not planning to put him in with Vasiliy Lomachenko just yet – who returns to world title combat in Leeds on October 12 against Sofiane Takoucht.
