THE WAITING WAS finally over at around 10.30pm on Saturday night when the two top heavyweight contenders made their way to the ring on the bank of the Thames in Westminster. Church House was a fitting venue because, for all its grandeur, the place is steeped in war history and our two heavyweight soldiers duly went into battle.
THEY SAY THAT good things come to those who wait. Rarely will this have been more true than what we have got coming up on Saturday night live on BT Sport. We have all had to be patient as the big date bounced from April to July to October to this weekend. I think we can all be in agreement that it will be well worth waiting for.
OUR BIG SHOW on December 5 is still very much in play with a headliner more than fit for the occasion of marking my 40 years as a licence holder with the British Boxing Board of Control. A top class domestic dust-up is always top of the charts when it comes to what the fans want to see and we are delivering two of the best in Anthony Yarde vs Lyndon Arthur in a light heavyweight blockbuster.
THE CARD FOR the explosive middleweight rematch between Mark Heffron and Denzel Bentley on Friday November 13 is now fully marked and we are guaranteed a good few more big bangs the week after Bonfire Night. With our top man at 160lbs, Liam Williams, now ready to create more of his own brand of havoc at world title level against Demetrius Andrade, we have been able to part him from the British title that played such a big part of launching the reboot of the Welsh firebrand.
IT SEEMS THAT the cat – or rather the King, in this case – has been let out of the bag over our intention to add the heavyweight champion of the world to our December 5 card at the Royal Albert Hall, which will also serve to partly mark my 40 years as a licenced promoter.
LIAM WILLIAMS WILL be looking to extend his reign of terror over the middleweight division on Saturday when he returns to the ring at the BT Studio in what will be our eighth post-lockdown promotion since July 10.
THE RETURN OF men’s world title action to UK television on BT Sport proved to be a short-lived affair on Saturday when Josh Taylor made quick work of the mandatory challenger for his unified super lightweight titles.
ANTHONY YARDE SHOWED the boxing world that he has lost nothing from having near on a year without a proper fight when he made a spectacular return to the ring at York Hall last Saturday night. I have long believed that Anthony is right up there with the best in the light heavyweight business, with perhaps the only thing lacking being a bit more experience. In many ways he has learned his trade on the job and you have to say he has made a pretty good fist of it.
ON SATURDAY NIGHT we roll into show six of our post lockdown series and the first of our autumn schedule when Anthony Yarde returns to the ring with world title glory still firmly on his mind. Anthony, of course, was within a few short seconds of causing a major upset in his first shot at securing a seat at boxing’s top table when he gamely ventured over to Russia and took on the long-standing champion Sergey Kovalev in the then WBO ruler’s home town of Chelyabinsk in August of last year.
WITH THE ONGOING circumstances across the globe still dictating that boxing fans remain absent from ringside, like many other sectors we have been forced to adapt and specialise in home delivery. Here at Queensberry we were eager to provide sports fans with their fistic fix and we got punches trading again at the earliest opportunity on July 10. From that date in a four-month period until October 10 we have or will have delivered eight shows for the fans to enjoy at home.
