Prograis To Fight Heraldez on Davis-Santa Cruz Showtime PPV

Former junior welterweight world titlist Regis Prograis, who last week worked out a separation agreement from promoter Lou DiBella and became a free agent, will have his next fight under the Premier Boxing Champions banner, multiple sources told BoxingScene on Friday. Prograis will face unbeaten Juan Heraldez in a 10-round junior welterweight fight on Oct. 24 at the Mohegan Sun resort in Uncasville, Connecticut. The bout will be part of the Showtime PPV card headlined by the lightweight and junior lightweight title fight between Gervonta Davis and Leo Santa Cruz.

Rising lightweight star Ryan Garcia was prepared to pack his bags and head to Luke Campbell’s turf to fight him in England this fall for the WBC’s vacant interim world title, so he was pleasantly surprised when he was informed on Wednesday that his promoter, Golden Boy, and Campbell representative Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing had come an agreement that will see the bout headline a DAZN card in the United States in November.

After weeks of difficult negotiations between Lopez and promoter Top Rank, the sides came to terms on Wednesday night, David McWater, Lopez’s manager, told BoxingScene just after he said he and Top Rank chairman Bob Arum finished hammering things out.

Peter Nelson Expected To Leave HBO Sports in Coming Weeks

Peter Nelson, the executive vice president of HBO Sports, is leaving the network “probably within the next 30-to-60” days, a source with knowledge of the plans told BoxingScene on Monday. Nelson, of course, is well known to boxing fans because of his time at the helm of the network’s sports division when boxing was its No. 1 franchise. He joined HBO Sports as a vice president in 2011, working mostly on its boxing programming, and when Ken Hershman left the network at the end of 2015, Nelson was promoted to the division’s top spot.

As Bernard Hopkins tells it, he and trainer Naazim Richardson were a team for so long that they barely needed words to express their thoughts to each other. “We had a connection without even talking. Me and Naazim been around each other so much that when he would nod his head at me I knew what he meant,” Hopkins told BoxingScene.com as he reflected on the untimely recent death of his cornerman. “When he’s talking it sounded like he was mumbling but to me it’s clear English.”

Junior lightweight world titlist Jamel Herring, who has had a defense against Jonathan Oquendo postponed twice because of positive Covid-19 tests, is rescheduled to fight him again. The fight is due to headline a Top Rank Boxing on ESPN card on Sept. 5 from “the bubble” inside the conference center at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, which also played host to Top Rank’s Tuesday and Thursday cards for most of June and July.
