Miguel Berchelt (28-1, 25 KOs) was originally scheduled to fight Roman ‘Rocky’ Martínez in a mouth-watering Mexico vs Puerto Rico clash for the WBO super featherweight title this Saturday in Mérida, Mexico. Nevertheless, due to injury, Martinez has been replaced by England’s George Jupp (13-2, 4 KOs), who has a terrific opportunity to stamp his name on the division.
Guillermo Rigondeaux and his team arrived in Miami just before 15:00 hours local time this afternoon (Tuesday) after failing to obtain a visa to travel from Russia for Saturday’s fight against James ‘Jazza’ Dickens at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.
On Saturday night in Grozny, Russia, Australia’s Lucas Browne (23-0, 20 KOs) will challenge Uzbekistan’s Ruslan Chagaev (34-2-1, 21 KOs) for the WBA regular heavyweight title as part of a tournament which will eventually see the WBA recognise only one man as champion in the division, as has been the clamour for some time.
For the past few days I have been trying to reach esteemed trainer Pedro Diaz who is in Europe for two interesting fights on March 5 and March 12. Travel, time zones and training schedules made it difficult but on Sunday afternoon I caught up with the Cuban and his star pupil Guillermo Rigondeaux (16-0, 10 KOs) following an early evening meal in preparation for their usual 10pm training session.
Super featherweight contender Tevin Farmer (20-4-1, 5 KOs) had been close to securing a fight with Edner Cherry for a ShoBox card in March, however, the Philadelphia native revealed to BoxingScene.com that the fight was rejected by Showtime.
Kiko Martínez will enter Saturday's WBA featherweight world title fight against Leo Santa Cruz without the aid of his usual trainer Gabriel Sarmiento. Following the loss of a parent, you could forgive anyone for taking an extended period of time before returning to work. However, Dyah Davis (23-4-1, 11 KOs) not only finds comfort in boxing, he also believes his father, the late, great Howard Davis Jr would have wanted him to continue.
As BoxingScene.com reported on Friday, former light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo announced his retirement from the sport. Campillo made that important decision after suffering back to back knockout defeats, last year, to rising contenders Artur Beterbiev and Marcus Browne.
Following two successive early knockout defeats in a row and after months of consideration, Spain’s Gabriel Campillo (25-8-1, 12 KOs) has decided to retire from the sport of boxing. Having achieved success as the WBA light heavyweight champion along with a successful defence of that belt, Gabriel at one time was considered one of the best fighters in the division. The general consensus was that he was also on the end of some disgraceful judging, not least in his rematch with Beibut Shumenov and in his IBF title challenge to Tavoris Cloud. Speaking to BoxingScene.com, Campillo reflected back on the key moments of his career in his usual affable and well-spoken manner.
Few people are better placed to give an opinion on the forthcoming blockbuster clash between Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg than a man who has shared the ring with both fighters. Kiko Martinez was stopped in nine rounds by Frampton in their first fight while going the distance with the Belfast native in their second encounter. Meanwhile Kiko was stopped in two rounds by Quigg last July.
