Estadio Centenario, Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico - Victor Terrazas (32-2-1, 18KOs) won a twelve round unanimous decision over former multi-division beltholder Fernando Montiel (46-4-2, 36KOs) to capture the vacant WBC silver super bantamweight championship. The scores were 115-112, 115-113 and 114-113.
In the early rounds, Montiel was having a lot of trouble with the long body and the reach of Terrazas. In the fifth a hard straight left sent Montiel down at the end of the round and he took some damage before the round was over.
In the eight, it was clear that both of Montiel's eyes were damaged and swelling up. There was a bad cut above the right eye of Montiel, but it possibly may have initially opened up from a clash of heads. Montiel was taking a lot of good punches and had no answers for Terrazas in the late rounds.
Montiel took a beating in the eleventh, tried his best to hit back to the body, with Terrazas outworking him with the harder and cripser shots that were landing straight through Montiel's guard.
Knowing he was behind, Montiel went to rally in the first minute of the final round by throwing heavy hooks to the body. A lot of holding by a tired Terrazas who kept an incoming Montiel close to coast for most of the two remaining minutes. Montiel was never able to seriously hurt Terrazas before the final bell rang to end the fight.
