Thurman Hopes To End Year With Porter, Brook, Khan

Brooklyn, New York - WBA 'regular' welterweight champion Keith Thurman (28-0, 22 KO’s) is realistic when it came to his assessment of his 2015 run.

Thurman started off in March with a twelve round decision win over multi-division champion Robert Guerrero, and then returned in July to dominate Luis Collazo for a TKO win. Thurman was a significant favorite in both fights.

“I’m going to have a conversation with [with my manager] Al Haymon and really sit down to get a fight that’s worthwhile,” Thurman said.

“I can only deal with so much of the politics. I want something meaningful before the year is out. The Guerrero fight was a meaningful fight, the Collazo fight was a so-so fight. I want a meaningful fight to end the year on. It could possibly Amir Khan, Kell Brook, and Shawn Porter. There’s a lot of options. I’m interested in those UK boys.”

Brook is rumored to return on October 24th. Thurman says the fight could happen on either side of the Atlantic Ocean

“Me and Kell Brook would be a great fight,” stated Thurman. “Would it sell better here or over there I’m not sure of Al’s interest in going overseas. Kell already came over here in fighting Shawn Porter. He says he has interest in fighting here so would he want to come here and fight? I don’t know. He’s still a young in his prime champion as am I. But I look forward to it.”

Thurman was on hand at the Garcia-Malignaggi fight from Brooklyn where Garcia stopped Malignaggi in the 9th round. A question was posed to Thurman if Garcia would be a viable option to close out the year. Thurman says the timing has to be right but would love to welcome Garcia to a true welterweight fight.

“First you got to ask him (Garcia) if he wants to fight at the end of the year,” explained Thurman. “A lot of these big fights have to do with timing. Anybody that steps up from the swimming pool from 140 to 147, I got my eye on them. Someone’s going to talk about me. I’m a bad man. I plan on taking over the welterweight division. I’m going to be testing everybody that’s going to be here at 147.”
