The manager of WBC 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (39-0-1, 29KOs), Jose 'Chepo' Reynoso, believes his boxer has a lot to lose in a possible fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26KOs) on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Reynoso and Canelo met with the executives from Golden Boy Promotions to discuss a possible fight against Mayweather. The two sides did not reach a final agreement, says Reynoso.
Sources with knowledge of the negotiations are claiming that Canelo is requesting more money than Mayweather is willing to pay at the moment.
"We do have a lot to gain by facing Mayweather because he is the best pound-for-pound fighter the world, but we also risk a lot... his undefeated record, his title. But we're ready for that challenge, or [Miguel] Cotto, or for whatever [Golden Boy] puts in front of us," Reynoso said.
Later today, Mayweather will appear for a hearing with the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Mayweather is expected to receive his license to boxing on May 5th. Several sources indidate that Mayweather is going to announce his next opponent after the hearing.
Several names have being rumored for Mayweather in the last few weeks - including Canlelo, Miguel Cotto, Robert Guerrero and even Erik Morales.
