Rising welterweight contender Errol Spence (17-0, 14KOs) made a statement this past Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He demolished Phil Lo Greco in three lopsided rounds.
Pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. was so impressed that he already made a request for Spence to appear on his pay-per-view undercard on September 12th at the MGM Grand.
Mayweather wants Spence to face either Shawn Porter or Keith Thurman on the card.
But neither Porter or Thurman are very interested in facing Spence on the undercard - they both want Mayweather in the main event.
In the opinion of Spence, British star Amir Khan (31-3, 19KOs) - based on his record, notoriety and name recognition, is ahead of Porter/Thurman in the Mayweather sweepstakes.
"I think [Porter is] close. I think probably [he needs] one more fight. I think if he fights Amir Khan or somebody, and beats Amir Khan or somebody like me, he will be in the Floyd sweepstakes. I don't think [Thurman] is there like Amir Khan. He's there, but he's not there," Spence told BoxingScene.com.
"I do think so [that Khan is ahead of Thurman and Porter in the Mayweather sweepstakes]. Amir Khan has fought a lot of fighters and he has a bigger name. I think the fight would make more sense, because Amir Khan has a lot of UK fans and has a bigger fan base [than Porter or Thurman]."
