Former IBF champion Shawn Porter is currently in the middle of his training camp for his March 13th showdown against Roberto Garcia on the inaugural boxing card on SpikeTV. The fight takes place in Ontario California and will be televised along with another welterweight clash that pits Andre Berto against Josesito Lopez.
He said that he was already in shape when he started his training camp and that they are already doing 12 rounds in camp.
"I am in great shape. I think we did 12 (rounds) on Thursday. We are doing well. I am trying to improve everyday," said Porter.
Porter started off 2014 with a bang by stopping Paulie Malignaggi but then suffered his first career loss in August against Kell Brook. He said that he learned a lot from that fight and that they are trying to correct the mistakes he made against Brook.
"I am just trying to pick up where I left off. The last fight didn't go the way I wanted it to go but I didn't get hurt in that fight and I learned from it," Porter explained. "You have to use great defense at all times. We are working on that everyday. We don't just want to be fast or athletic. We need to be strategic and that is what we are working on. Hit and not get hit."
The week prior to his fight Robert Guerrero returns to the ring against Keith Thurman and Adrien Broner faces John Molina. Porter admits that he is going to pay attention to both of those fights and when asked about Guerrero-Thurman, he said that it is close to an even fight.
"I am a competitor. I cannot not look at those fights. I am hungry (to face those guys) but I maintain focus to win my fight. I am very interested to fight any of those guys.
"(Guerrero-Thurman) is a very tough fight. I hope it is a good fight. I can't pick a winner in that fight because both fighters can box and they like to slug it out too," Porter told BoxingScene.com.
