WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz is not impressed with Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s style of fighting, or his undefeated 41-0 record. Ortiz defends his title against Mayweather on September 17th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The bookmakers have listed Ortiz as a serious underdog, but that only motivates the 24-year-old boxer.
"Mayweather has never impressed me, ever since I was a kid," Ortiz told the Orange County Register. "There's been a lot of hype. He's fought the right fight at the right time. Go home and turn off the sound. He's nothing. Well, not nothing, but not as great as people think. I thought he lost to (Jose Luis) Castillo. I thought Oscar was beating him, one-sided, until he stopped using the jab. I don't know that it's really a tough fight."
Ortiz's trainer, Danny Garcia, agrees. He feels Ortiz is the first prime boxer that Mayweather has ever faced.
"He's never fought anybody in his prime," said Garcia. "Everybody's been either too old or too young."
